- STAY ALIVE UPDATE. APPARENTLY THE 75uf CAPACITOR IS ENOUGH TO KEEP IT ALIVE FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND, WHICH IS ENOUGH TO REDUCE LIGHT FLICKER AND SOUND STUTTER. FOR LONGER STAY ALIVE DIGITRAINS HAVE RECOMMENDED A 1000uf CAPACITOR. I SHALL DO ANOTHER VIDEO TO COMPARE ONCE I GET SOME.
heres a how to tutorial on how to fit a Zimo dcc sound chip to an O gauge class 08 made by Dapol.
this chip is loaded with Paul Chetter sound
to buy this chip and speaker visit www.digitrains.co.uk
The shunt radio made me chuckle.
@@peteedwards7157 it’s a fun thing, but not much in the way of usefulness due to the limit of phrases unfortunately as you’d need a lot more functions to get a conversation in
Thank you for making this video. I have treated myself to a Dapol Class 08 from Hattons as my Christmas present. Having download the 08 instructions from the Dapol website, I note that the body can be removed with ease from the chassis. Also the PCD board can also be unplug from the locomotive to work on separate. Thank again for interesting channel & Happy Christmas from the UK.
my pleasure. Happy Christmas to you too
Thanks for the heads up on how to wire the sound chip capacitor and speaker in i have got one on its way from Howes for my dapol o guage 08.I will try not to burn mine whilst fitting easily done but lucky to say the least not noticeable on yours.
Glad it’s of help. Dead easy 👍
Really love the 08 and now with added sound - I’m very jealous indeed but by far stunning together
My wallet is pulling it’s way to an O gauge 08 😬 and is getting closer every month..
Just don’t ever tell my wife 🤣
Great video Thanks for sharing
Garry 👍
Ha ha. be careful Garry, once bitten you may find yourself ripping up your OO
Steve Smith - I do that’s the problem 😆😆

Omg 😮🤦🏻♂️
@@cheekytek i look forward to you showing off your new 08 on your next upload :-)
Love the video but, do you think there is room for a bigger / more speaker(s)?
Yes, there is more room than I’ve used
I have the same sound chip in my 08 but have not as yet added the stay alive. I need to do so as it sometimes stalls on my points. I loved you instructional video, but did you find out why it does not appear to 'be keeping it alive'?
Robin
the 25v 75uf capacitor supplied, according to Digitrains, keeps the chip alive for a fraction of a second, which apparently is enough to stop the sound stuttering or the lights flickering due to dirt etc. they also said they don't bother to use it. they recommend if you need a longer spell of the capacitor keeping the chip alive, try a 1000uf capacitor. i will do so, but not got to my local (450km away) electronics shop. i will probably find something online and give it a try
Ok thanks, thats useful information, I might try that myself.

Hi again, just a little heads up, I tried my O8 with a 25v 1000uf and found exactly the same result as with your test using the 75uf version. In other words it was not noticeable. I did the testing over a bad point, (which I can remedy) but was waiting to use it as a testing ground for the capacitors. So I ended up fitting a 25v 4700uf capacitor (which is physically quite large but fits ok in the 08). That worked as I was hoping the 1000uf would, it went over the point I mentioned with no problem, and also kept running for a split second when lifted of the track.

Could you tell me which shop you got the decoder and speaker from very tempted to get an 08 now ! Ta

I’ve just got the Dapol factory fitted and I have to say I’m very disappointed with the sound and after seeing this I will be going for a Paul Chetter in the next one.
indeed. having seen who supplied the original sound files for the Dapol fitted version, i cancelled my pre order for the new loco's and bought the Paul Chetter chip instead. obviously some people are happy with the factory sound, but there are better choices available
