i was a kid i nthe 80s when i found a box of conan magazines at my friends house. his dad let us read them and played dungeons and dragons with us a few times but joked "dont tell your mothers" when i was a bit older i started putting togetehr a full run and i still have it to this day. one of prized possessions.
Finally finished reading Vol 1 last night. Like you mentioned, the inks by Alcala are freaking amazing. That's technique straight out of the French Academie from the 1800s.
I got "Conan Saga" reprints as an elementary school kid in the '80's. I discovered them on the magazine rack while my mom looked for her Southern Living titles. She had no idea what was inside- the level of violence and sexuality. I loved it! Bought them throughout elementary school. Lost most. I'm buying this cover option it's too late. Great review; thanks!
Great overview! I wasn't a big fan of Conan, but from the few issues that I read back in the day I always felt that Barry Windsor-Smith's art had an edge to it. Very dynamic and with good black/white contrasts.
I really appreciate your overviews. Particularly this one, the one on Swamp-Thing, and the one on the first volume of Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme are exceptional. Please keep up the great work. BTW, this video cuts out very abruptly at the end. I am not sure that was your intention, but thank you for showcasing the amazing art of Savage Sword!
Unfortunately I went over the allotted time of 15 minutes that RUclips puts on my iPhone for some reason and I had to choose a spot to stop the video. I won't make that mistake again!
Thanks for this video sir. The artwork is incredible. Started my collection couple of years back with the Dark Horse versions of Savage sword. Will be buying this Marvel Omnibus for sure now.
Oh, so this collection includes the non-Conan back-up stories. Neat! It was weird in the older Dark Horse collections how some issues would be represented by a single 10 page story. Maybe if I ever have a budget to space I'll spring for this and get those extras...
Fun Fact: When Dark Horse controlled the Conan brand, they had books in the library for FREE (Hoopla-digital library app). Then, when Marvel re-gained control of the brand, they pulled every single book from the library. :( P.S. Conan is still my favorite! P.S.S. NIce video!
I owned them all. John Buscema's art was never better to me than when it was rendered by the pen and ink of Alfredo Alcala. Those black and white editions of Buscema / Alcala are beautiful landmark work (glad you agree). Disappointingly, to me, Buscema did not like Alcala's inks. He felt it overpowered his pencils, but he was his BEST inker to me. (Next to Tom Palmer and Joe Sinnot in that order). Thank goodness for the editorial decisions to use Alcala. (The Philippine artists were being used a lot because of they were economical, so it may have come down to that.) Thanks for the review Omni Dog. I might get one.
Good review Jess. I really enjoyed the Dark horse line from the early 2000s. I've been debating on picking this up or the other Marvel Conan Omni. Which would you recommend of the two?
Nice preview of the book, Jess! You and I both were from the same era when we would pick these magazines out at the newsstand stores. The spinner racks containing the comic books were in the middle of the store and these more lewd magazines were on the shelves closer to the checkout (where on the opposite side would be the adults-only section where the nude magazines were). Are you planning on collecting all these SSOC Omnis as they come out? Since there were a total of 235 issues of this title and 275 issues of Conan The Barbarian, that's going to be ALOT of Omnis if Marvel plans on maintaining the run in these editions.
I hear ya. I'm going to be doing the same. I picked up the two Hands of Kung Fu Omnis of those B&W mags only because that contained them all, but I think I will just be buying this first volume since I still have the DH paperback "Omni's" of these issues anyway. I'll continue buying the CTB Omnis up through issue 114 when Roy Thomas left the book (and Marvel at that time).
man that is a beaut - now i want it - but you can't beat the single issue presentations - but i guess you can have both - but does one need both? oh, the problems i have, the problems i have
Is avengers omni vol 4 worth it in your opinion? Also I bought savage sword of conan omni but the pages have this curl in it and I'm not sure how to fix it. Any ideas?
You went for the DM cover? Of course you went for the DM cover. :) Happy Birthday, brother. See? I do watch your videos...only to steal your ideas and material...mwhahahahahaha!
"...And so began the War of Three Hundred Years between the forces of Omar Nearmint The Complete and his eternal nemesis OmniDog the Wolf of Variantz. Under crimson skies choked with the blackened pillars of smoke from the funerary pyres of the vanquished dead, the hordes of these legendary warlords of Pristinia plunged forth into endless battle, ceaselessly devoting every drop of their blood to annoint their sacred iron with tainted ichor of their hated foes. Their swords clashed, their shields splintered, their spears skewered and axes clove with wanton, unquenchable carnality. The torpor of their fury brought low the mountains, the sparks of their steel ignited the forests, and the might of their rage rent the Earth beneath their feet. ...But this is a tale for another time..."
Cheaper to buy the originals and you get ALL the stories, portfolios, etc.that Marvel promised in the Omnibus but was to cheap get the rights to. 'NUFF SAID.
I love old Conan comics so much, to me old black and white comic ages very well because it is much easier to read, instead of with old strong color scheme that ages poorly and quite jarring to look at tbh lol.
I understand you didn't like Berserk, but did you like the artwork for it at least? One thin that's drawing me to this is the artwork and how closely it matches that of Berserk.
JayDawn i just don’t think manga is for me. I really didn’t get that much out of the story or art and this is my 6th or 7th manga. But I’m glad you enjoyed it!!

what a fun story, thanks!!
The art is breath taking! No one draws like this anymore today (Sadly...)
Have you seen the latest? Trash. After Dark Horse it went down the road to forgettable.
Finally finished reading Vol 1 last night. Like you mentioned, the inks by Alcala are freaking amazing. That's technique straight out of the French Academie from the 1800s.
NICE! Glad you enjoyed it!
The artwork is just breahtaking. Great video, thanks!

haha that's a great story!! Thanks for watching!!
That art is incredible, can't wait to read mine.
Thank you for this detailed video
thank you for watching!
Red Sonja first appeared within Conan's original Marvel run, issue #23.
Great overview! I wasn't a big fan of Conan, but from the few issues that I read back in the day I always felt that Barry Windsor-Smith's art had an edge to it. Very dynamic and with good black/white contrasts.

Omnidog's Vault oh no! Well, the walk through you gave us was still amazing.
Thanks for this video sir. The artwork is incredible. Started my collection couple of years back with the Dark Horse versions of Savage sword. Will be buying this Marvel Omnibus for sure now.

P.S.S. NIce video!
PhanaticalProduction thanks for that info!
Out of all the SSOC volumes, which one would you say has the most entertaining stories and artwork?
The first 3 are my favorites, so if they're all in print I'd say #1. Or whatever one is in print between 1-3

Cordell Senior thank you for watching! Very interesting history!!
Good review Jess. I really enjoyed the Dark horse line from the early 2000s. I've been debating on picking this up or the other Marvel Conan Omni. Which would you recommend of the two?
oh boy, that's tough. I think this book is my choice as it benefits from the longer story telling arcs.
I'm planning on getting the first couple of omnis of each series but that's probably it. I just don't have the space for everything.
I hear ya. I'm going to be doing the same. I picked up the two Hands of Kung Fu Omnis of those B&W mags only because that contained them all, but I think I will just be buying this first volume since I still have the DH paperback "Omni's" of these issues anyway. You shop at third eye comics?? 😃😃 me too!!! So cool!!
I LOVE Third Eye! Steve and Trish and the whole crew are amazing!!
man that is a beaut - now i want it - but you can't beat the single issue presentations - but i guess you can have both - but does one need both? oh, the problems i have, the problems i have
Are the other volumes as good as this one? This looks beautiful! I'm considering on buying them all.
That artwork. O.O
Greetings from Spain....what a great overview about this omnibus from the Savage Sword....is this the Second one?
Hola Spain!! This is the first Savage Sword omni! Thank you for watching!!
Ohhh I See, with a different cover!
Thanks for you responce!
Hope you do more Conan,
Hasta la vista amigo!
Saw you like spire and coda, you should really check out cluster, also from boom
ok, will do!
Jess, is this worth picking up based o. The story alone
If you like Conan, then yes!
Nice review. Would this book be worth picking up even if you know nothing about Conan?
I think so, all you need to know is that he's a Barbarian!
Why would you get something you don't know nothing about? Read some stories first and see if you like them.
@@rodrigosoares7126 So how do I go about reading some of the stories for free without pirating them?
Super
Thank you!!
Is avengers omni vol 4 worth it in your opinion? Also I bought savage sword of conan omni but the pages have this curl in it and I'm not sure how to fix it. Any ideas?
I'm not sure about the curl, it could be humidity but that's just a guess. Avengers 4 is a book I'll do an overview of and you can take a look at it!
I can't do b&w. Are the paperbacks in color?
Not of Savage Sword.
You went for the DM cover? Of course you went for the DM cover. :) Happy Birthday, brother. See? I do watch your videos...only to steal your ideas and material...mwhahahahahaha!

Was that Devil Dinosaur or just a regular T Rex? Great video
Red Sonja was not a Conan character in REH's work.
Language is descriptive not prescriptive.
If your pronounciation sounds right to you, thatll do. (As long as youre jot offending a person)
Not worth it.
To each their own.
