The Fall has been and always will be my ‘safety nets’ - it’s there whenever you run out dry, it’s there when the radio doesn’t makes sense, it’s there when you tired of the same ol’playlist but have not found the track deserving th attention. It grows and grows - ones need to practice caution else it consume you, and it’s tiring.

How can I put this? It's like... I don't think anybody just goes through a "phase" of listening to The Fall. Those of us who listen to them, pretty much always have there music at the forefront of our collections. I mean, I've gone through phases where I listened to a lot be-bop and The Fall. Or a lot of industrial/techno/trance and The Fall. or sixties psychedelic garage, and The Fall, or a Bach binge... and The Fall. You know what I am saying? Anybody?
I'm buyin' what you're sellin' - pickin' up what you're settin' down ... but I feel very strongly that you should have concluded your post with: *"signed, the fish"*
I agree with you who say that once a fan of The Fall always a fan of The Fall, I love them more and more with each record..They have never got the recognition they deserve but maybe that is why the vitality and hunger to perform has remained for M.E.S. He has a working class attitude towards music and is never happy to sit back after making a new record..I have the utmost respect for the man as a musician, let's hope he has a few albums left in him.
I think the Fall foottage from this gig is some of the best live Fall i've even seen/heard. Enormous sound from the bass. "Dear Dope, signed the fish". Fantastic Fall track.
This is brilliant. There always seems to be that line between genius and tragedy. At the start you think it's a going to pot. Mark can't to work out where he is, everyone else looks tense and worried. He drops the mic, wanders around. Any other band would be guaranteed a scathing review that finishes them the next day. Then suddenly out of nowhere comes this force in Mark that propels him and the rest of the band, despite the crowd's indifference. By end you realize why they're so great. Perfect
@@siesm1167 Indeed it does. I think there's five videos from the gig on that You Tube channel. I visit them all regularly. I'm becoming very Fall fixated.
I first saw The Fall in Wolverhampton in 1981-ish and was blown away. 30 years later and I have become the willing, drudge-bound prole that MES always railed against being. Meanwhile he's still there - being resolutely himself, spilling genius with every syllable and shagging slighlty scary foreign birds. I hope he makes some money one day. He deserves it.
Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic version, but Mark's performance is fairly subdued and laid-back, which makes you realise how much his so-called "bad singing" actually improves and adds to the power of the songs live. He knows what he's doing; he's a genius, and he has greater control and range of his voice than any Auto-Tuned pop starlet out there that you'd care to mention. I'm just saying - when Mark sings "properly" it's a much as a surprise as anything else The Fall offer up. Superb.
This was such a great era of theirs. This is ‘debut-fresh’, like so much of their stuff, but the FHR album and year or three that surrounded it were some of their best.
after his explosion with the Fall Heads Roll lads he ended up settling into a more sedate relationship with the group around him. I still maintain that the FHR group rocked harder than any Fall group ever, just in terms of Riffs and noise. I'm glad I got to see both versions of the group
@@TheIkaraCult i saw them on that tour and it was exactly as you say; huge grooves and dancing music - they had two bass players; a few years later I saw them again and they had smoothed out a bit, but the rawness was still there
It's hard to piss off two bass players on one fraught tour to the extent they both leave. Saw them with two drummers early 80's. They were good but same consideration.
I never considered The Fall to be a dance band. Then I saw them some time back in the 80's and I realized just how goddamned danceable they were. Couldn't stop moving! The ONLY person that shouldn't be moving at a Fall show is fucking Mark!
Wish i was there to see them, the group was excellent even though i am nearly sixty. have just got to hear the fall and I have been missing a lot. A very talented singer with a poetic outlook.
I’m 61. Saw The Fall play live at The Cedar in Birmingham in the 80’s. I was the only female in the audience & the only person not wearing a donkey jacket 😉 Fell in love with the music that night & have been listening ever since. MES. RIP

Maybe at some point people will look back, and notice The Fall. And appreciate them properly, like how the likes of The Velvet Underground, Nick Drake and other underground acts have had a developing reputation rather than an instantaneous one.
i am from a small city near by the sea called kamena vourla(Greece)..im not from manchester but i am brownd for manchester and all that ideas who born there....in the north england! manchester the world capital of matters!!!!!!
you are so goddamn right and the amount of times over the years i've come back to this video, they nail it perfectly and so glad at least some in the audience are aware of it...
The Fall have always (generally) played to the unappreciated. - I am going off on the Tangent here. It annoys me how many of the comments focus on people whining about the behaviour of the audience. I would wager they are just trying to look cool (the commenter's) and they too would have been at gigs with like 2 people applauding if they had watched them in earlier days.(and 19 / 20 of them wouldn't be one of the 2
Your not alone kid . I first heard THE FAll on radio one John peel slot in the suburbs of wales as a young teen I was intrigued, shocked, then as I am now .im feeling this track and the usual care free swagger of Mark e.its punk ,bassy, and the way he lethargically spouts the lyric .WORKS F ME TOP NOTCH keep it comin THE FALL.
Love the fall. Love climbing mountains. Just found my perfect head track for stomping up hills and dangling off rocks . Probably have to climb a Alp film it and use this as the sound track.
The slow, but eventualy real, realization of the audience, that Mark E. and The mighty Fall had hypnotized them.
Mark P stil have my Fall records.
A song about an audience hypnotised at a festival sounds like something Mark was writing on albums in 83-84 PBL/WAFWOTF
Right on.
😂
No he put them to sleep.
This is utterly, utterly magnificent.

Absolutely right, whatever phase I'm going through musically, The Fall are always there
Spot on but if you're gonna be consumed by anything then The Fall is the best antidote!
I used to daydream about having a Mark E Smith Sat-Nav.
"Turn left-ah at the roundabout-ah....."
Needs to become
😂
He hates roundabouts!
That would be utterly brilliant!
Turna Lefta!!
In my opinion this 7 mins represents the pinnacle of human artistic expression thus far

The Fish
Mister Blairstowe and Mister Partridge
They said to me
"To get a mortgage
You need an income lid"
I thought it was free
Dolly Parton and Lord Byron
They said "patriotism is the last refuge"
But now it's me
And water's flowing
Down the mountain
But a tree is blocking
The water flowing
So I went fishing
A note from a fish said
"Dear dope
If you wanna catch us
You need a rod and a line
Signed, the fish"
Water is flowing
Down the mountain
But a tree is blocking
The water flowing
Went to the car rental
They said to me
"You need a log book
And a licence, son"
Water's flowing
Down the mountain
But a tree is blocking
The water coming
Mountain energei
And water's flowing
Down the mountain
"They said to me
'How many technicians
does it need,
To set up a mike stand,
I thought it was three.'"

bloody hell, the Fall sounding audible, I'm shocked. this is soo good.

Nothing else scratches that itch.
Agree completely
Nothing punches like the fall.
Just WOW.
I’ve watched/listened to this 116,000 times.
This is officially my favourite video on RUclips
Every time I watch, listen, this edges closer to a kind of small, simple, stripped-down slice of musical perfection. I think I'll go round again...

Front row. Best gig they ever played. Still got my ticket. Yoko Ono played straight after. The Cramps played that weekend too. Only Yoko survived!
The Fall, Yoko Ono & the Cramps? - wow that sounds like my absolute festival from hell. All that's missing is Paul Weller, Bob Dylan and Metallica !
Thank you for uploading this, I've watched it at least 3-4 times a week for the past 6 months I think I need help.

This is an absolutely amazing set. I saw this iteration of the Fall in Pomona, CA last year, and despite their age, they placed a great show.
Awesome. Still as good as when I first saw them in 1983 at The Hacienda. MES RIP.
Just love it when he milks a riff to death while ensuring that those riffs dont dry up at all.
