Christina. You talk to much in an interview. TIP Let the interviewee talk, you might something that can save you life
@jcristina failover video step by step yes thanks
Amateur radio ( Ham) is a fraternity. These folks are a special breed that look out for their friends, family, search & rescue and the safety of their community.
Great episode Joe - I'm a Canadian ham radio operator myself (VE3GHP) and the combination of ham radio plus StarLink makes an awesome communication package.
I take 'em both with me when RVing and love the combination. - Cheers!
Good video. I have been a licensed radio operator since 1977. I think in an emergency situation Amateur Radio can mesh with and other communications technologies to help people. But as Jason said, a hurricane or severe weather can take out infrastructure for cell and terrestrial internet, so If you don’t have access to StarLink, then someone with an Amateur radio license and radio may be your only chance for communication.. You have to remember that ham radio is a hobby, you talk to many friends all at the same time, or even people all over the world. If you normally talk to your friends over radio at a given time of day, they will probably never replace their radio with the internet or cell phone service, even if they have those services as options.
Mr. JCristina, you are the perfect exemple of the type of resourcefull person to be a great radioamateur.
There are hundreds of points of interest inside the activity, you don't have to put up with the bad parts....
Please go ahead and thousands of Hams will be super-happy....😊
I'm using both. >:) And more.
I am already there as W8QS, great questions
KE8PKO here! I see both as viable options depending on the situation! 73!
Do a video on the fail over device!
Great show JCristina and Jason! Folks- DO NOT be intimidated by the "test". The whole purpose of the test is to ensure you know the rules - for instance all Questions are multiple choice. There are NO "trick questions". The FCC which governs Ham Radio ("Ham" is the same as "Amateur") actually publishes the questions and answers. It's up to you to study the questions - and know WHY a particular question is correct. For Example - "When are you allowed to transmit (talk) on an amateur radio and not have a license?" The answers may be like A) Only during a full moon.
B) During an emergency situation and lives or substantial property is at risk . C) When your Mom is with you. Now, there is a pool of 100 questions, of which 35 will be on your test and you only have to get 26 correct to pass (it's pass/fail - no one cares about your actual score). The technician test comes first - when you pass that - you get your technician license , the next level (if you want to upgrade) is "General" -- spoiler alert - at least 50% of the Technician question pool is the same as the General license, so many people take them both at the same sitting - take Technician and if you pass you can take the General. Me, I passed my Technician then someone said, "Why don't you take the General" so I did and I passed that also. I am not a genius. Knowing electronics has virtually NOTHING to do with the Technician and only a very small part to the General (remember 26 out of 35 = Pass) and with a General license you can do at least 90% of what ANY Ham can do. As Jason said - find a local club and see if they hold classes to get your license. Go to one of those. It is legit to study the Q&A's - they want you to. That gets the information into your brain. Good Luck!
Well said
I use both ham radio and starlink. I have a ham since the 1970s and have my extra class licence. On the emergency side I have been a torando spotter and helped with other serious emergencies. It works when other services are out. Even if all my antennas are taken out I can string up an antenna in less then an hour and be back on the air and work the world.
Thanks for the info
Thank you JC for doing this interview. This have changed my view on the technology. I actually google how to DIY a ham radio 😂
Fun!!!!!
Awesome
I use the Bluetti 700 watt backpack 🎒 battery with solar panel for my Starlink mini using the usb-C cable. BLUETTI Handsfree 2 Backpack Power
Station
With a mini you can use your cell phone on wifi.
thanks for updating
It was a lot of fun.
Great Show!
Just got Starlink this week and I gotta say I should’ve switched sooner
Oh ya!! Family life changer.
i was on search an rescue back in the day with the sheriff office, back in the day before sat comms which are the thing now a days....Ham was what we used to get us by, problem was we used a repater on the other side of the valley ( I'm in Utah) if we were up a canyon it was not reliable......sat coms in todays world just makes more sense and it just more efficient.
Agree. As long as you have view of the sky. You’re good.
Passed my test in 1982 when I was at Radio Officer college. Only recently got call sign though. Had RA kit here since 2021. Base Stn and mobile kit too but all short distance. Did not see need for investment as yet for HF kit. Thanks for doing this video. G5PMJ.
Blessings.
🦄 P.S. Congratulations for finally getting Fiber! You mentioned so many times not having it.
I got my ham radio technician license 2 years ago, 6 months later I got Starlink, then 3 months ago I got Starlink Mini. I agree there is enough difference but also see a lot of overlap too. (I see this overlap as a good thing.) For me Starlink is my primary tool and, for the most part, ham is becoming more of a backup for my application. I guess I use ham as a public communication tool and Starlink as a private communication tool, like the example given of a communication for a caravan. Others may have more applications, this is just me.
As DTC rolls out I’m not so sure ham will be as valuable to me as the long-term ham people suggest. Time will tell.
Also, ham may be growing but not even close to Starlink growth. And the average age of a ham operator is older than the typical age of Starlink users. So we’ll see how ham grows in the future.
Personally I have value in having both but I’m curious if I’ll be the exception.
Interesting topic
Glad you think so. Was fun hanging out with Jason.
My best was 10 watts voice SSB 40M California to Japan
Wow
Which radio did you use?
Nice!
Question: If I have starrling as a backup and turned off, can I activate it through starlink if I don't have any other communications available? I am also a ham operator and use Winlink among other things.
Yah, you should. Some people do that. Keep the dish stowed away.
🚀👍🏼🇺🇸
👍🏻👍🏻
Yah!!
Wranglestar needs to watch this.. His head will explode! If you know, you know.. 🤣 🤣
🎤 📻 🚀
Distance has long been a question for me. I want to be able to reach my son in a disaster (or SHTF situation), but he lives 11 hours away. As interesting as HAM radio is, DTC seems like a better solution.
For certain situations. Absolutely.
Is that the Satellite two way hand radio?
11 hours is totally doable with an HF station. We had an event last weekend for Ham Radio, I was in Texas talking to folks in CT, NY, NJ, CA, OR, WA, and parts of Canada.
@@HamRadio2 is this portable?
@@patriciaort9172 Absolutely. We were setup at a State Park for this event, everything we had was carried into the park with us.
Good job bro, I was gonna ask is there any way I can activate starlink in my area? Because it showing sold out
@@ChriswishWish you could but of course with using ROAM package which is $165/mo. That works even in sold out areas.
👍
🦄 What if Starlink main station gets carried away in a storm? I have two way hand radio. They are fun. If you get one, make a video. No more roof installs if it could get taken by a storm.
👽
great job- i just wish Ham radio was a little more simplistic
I guess that is kinda the point. Like using the old when the new fails. It was very interesting to me.
It is easy to it all depends on how you were taught.
Simplistic how?
Your guest sounds like Ted Cruz
I don't expect any interference to ham radio their are some ham radio satelight now and even some hams that bounce singals off the moon. I have worked hams on the international space station and even one time on Mir the Soviet-Russian space station.
I got into Ham Radio after a week long power failure highlighted that internet and cell phone service goes out in 24 hours.
Communication in anyway is great to have.
Hmm huh. mm yeah mmm Mhu uh yeah. Hmm huh. mm yeah mmm Mhu uh yeah. Hmm huh. mm yeah mmm Mhu uh yeah. - Distracting. I listen to podcasts at 2x so i notice those interupters and thought words a lot easier.
The background music is SOOOOOO distracting.....maybe leave it out next time. Great channel BTW ;)
Noted! Thanks so much Steve. Appreciate the constructive criticism.
I agree too!
I don’t even hear background music. Maybe faintly when I turn volume way up. Other than that, I think video sound is okay.
@@GalaGirly its there, working in industry without ear protection for years doesn't help
Any time I get two sounds or conversations theY get mixed up I thought it was me my dr said its a common problem for older people.
Geez
7 minutes in video
Get on with it
Hey Timmy. Skip ahead. We’ll charge you the same price.
Yes very annoying. No other channel I watch, does all this intro stuff every single time. Would be different if he had chapters and could easily skip.
Skipping ahead and not knowing how long the intro stuff is, you need to keep checking what he’s talking about.
Save food for the coming global famine (chem-trails) first then ham radios
This guy looks so gay drinking tea
I am at the beginning of my "investment journey", planning to put 385K into dividend stocks so that I will be making up to 30% annually in dividend returns. any good stock recommendation on great performing stocks or Crypto will be appreciated....
