As a Malaysian reaching 40 soon, I identify with all she has said. Even though I am not a Muslim, growing up I see and acknowledge all the transitions at the said time. Islamization crept in so very slowly and next thing you know Malaysia is how it is right now. What she said about schools are very true. I studied in a public school, went to a public university and was a teacher in a public school.
The Islamic tension in Malaysia is very tricky. It is either soft nor extreme and sometimes it mix up. But I'm sure if other religions started to spread their religion like the Muslims, they will get mad. All those "peaceful" sunnis, sufist or whatever Islamic branches here will act like the "evil" shia. No, they already prove a little bit that they are the same. The insecurities of the Muslims is like a thin piece of can. Even the smallest things can become an uproar. There will be a day that they will bear their fruits.

Im Indonesian. Nowadays you can download and read, study, investigate the Tanakh (Old Testament) and the Gospel easily via the internet. You can all read for yourself how the oldest texts in the Tanakh, 2200 years ago, come from the Dead Sea Scrolls. If you read the Qur'an, you find a book that does not describe a theological building, is not rich in context so it has to import so many tafsir and haditz, is not chronological, is not thematic, and seems random. When you read the Tanakh, which was written thousands of years before the Injil and the Qur'an, you will see that it is so structured, so chronological and so rich in context that you don't even need much commentary to understand it. It's time for all Muslims to learn the Tanakh. There are also many Jewish writings from the 2nd century to the 10th century CE, namely Midrash, Mishnah, Targum and others that you can access on the internet so you will know that these writings are the sources for the Qur'an.

It’s really in the mind, I’m always being impressed by Muslims that the hijab is a choice, an option and is not mandatory. If there is a deeper symbolism attached to the hijab, that has not been clearly communicated to me. I understand that the head covering is part of the uniform in the civil service and you don’t really have an option not to wear it. So there are women in the Malaysian civil service who take off the head covering outside of work. It seems that their conscience is pretty clear. Honestly outside of your close acquaintances, no one else bats an eyelid. However, I can pretty much guess at the reason for the difficulty and sentiments in discarding the hijab. It’s a visual representation of the faith declaration. Discarding the hijab is like saying you are no longer as committed to the faith. Hence the anxiety and panic attacks even at the thought of it. However, it is true that Malaysia has been experiencing increasing radicalisation along with the rest of the world.
I always wanted to become friends with Malay ex Muslims. That doesn’t mean I have never had Malay Muslims as friends I did during my secondary school years. Now I have completely removed them from my life.
Mahathir isnt an Islamist. Matter of fact he seems and sounds like a Quranist. One thing for sure he hated the fundamental Islamic politics. On the backlash question, there was an ex-Muslim man who was detained under the Official Secrets Act back in the 1980s or early 90s. He was detained because he was proselytising and many Malays were converting to Christianity because of his testimony. He was tortured and took a long time to recover. They’ve all gone underground.
I would like to add my 2 cents. I'm puzzled why she said the hijab was still relatively unusual in the '90s. From my recollection it was already normalised by the late '80s, like it was considered almost mandatory. Islamic fundamentalism hadn't progressed as far as it has now in Malaysia but with regards to hijabing, that was pervasive. The practice started taking off in Malaysia in the late 70s, early '80s. It spread very quickly and by the late '80s, it was well established.

Malaysia is considered a moderate Muslim country, yet in 2017, a public school kept separate utensils for non-Muslim students. A few years earlier, non-Muslims students at another school were forced to a separate eating area next to the toilets. (In fairness, both incidents garnered voices of protest from other Malay Muslims).
I am ex muslim from Indonesia. We have a lot number of ex here in Indonesia but in the ID still written Islam as religion cause in Indonesia we must put our religion on it despite we have already converted to other faith or being agnostic but mostly converted to Christianity.
It is easier to live as a Malay Atheists than to live as a Malay Christians here. As long as you don't speak about it. Most of my Malay friends don't even live like a Muslims. They basically atheists, godless and don't care about whether they pray to Allah or not. The Muslims are good people, friendly but not when you talk about other religions or declaring yourself as atheist. Especially by the mention the name Israel. The Malay Muslims are a sensitive people. Child ego. Their shell are easy to be crack open to see what is actually inside.

In Islam, if you expect the husband to basically pay for everything (including your expenses and the kids’ expenses) - and not share equally in all the expenses - then you are expected to “obey” him.

As a Malaysian reaching 40 soon, I identify with all she has said. Even though I am not a Muslim, growing up I see and acknowledge all the transitions at the said time. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur'anic verse: "Your wives are a tilth to you, so come to your tilth however you will," i.e. from in front, from behind or lying on the back. But this verse meant the place of the delivery of the child, i.e. the vagina.

I have seen none lacking in common sense and failing in religion but (at the same time) robbing the wisdom of the wise, besides you. Upon this the woman remarked: What is wrong with our common sense and with religion? He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Your lack of common sense (can be well judged from the fact) that the evidence of two women is equal to one man, that is a proof of the lack of common sense, and you spend some nights (and days) in which you do not offer prayer and in the month of Ramadan (during the days) you do not observe fast, that is a failing in religion.
sahih al-bukhari 1052, book 16, hadith 12 - The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "I saw Paradise and stretched my hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Why is it so?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The Prophet said, "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good deeds. If you are benevolent to one of them throughout the life and if she sees anything (undesirable) in you, she will say, 'I have never had any good from you.

Nowadays you can download and read, study, investigate the Tanakh (Old Testament) and the Gospel easily via the internet. You can all read for yourself how the oldest texts in the Tanakh, 2200 years ago, come from the Dead Sea Scrolls. If you read the Qur'an, you find a book that does not describe a theological building, is not rich in context so it has to import so many tafsir and haditz, is not chronological, is not thematic, and seems random. When you read the Tanakh, which was written thousands of years before the Injil and the Qur'an, you will see that it is so structured, so chronological and so rich in context that you don't even need much commentary to understand it. It's time for all Muslims to learn the Tanakh. There are also many Jewish writings from the 2nd century to the 10th century CE, namely Midrash, Mishnah, Targum and others that you can access on the internet so you will know that these writings are the sources for the Qur'an.

Curious, Muslims say they worship 1 God. Why do they worship Muhammad too and bow to kaabah 5 times a day when it is just a rock? Are they worshipping a pagan God too? So they worship Allah, Muhammad and the kaabah?

Muslim only worship 1 God. The God that Adam, Moses, Abraham even Jesus worship to. Muslims do not worship Muhammad pbuh. But God made him the best role model to follow. Muslims do not worship Kaabah but the God. The kaabah is just a direction for all muslim to pray so that everyone prays in the same direction which shows unity. Hopefully non-muslim malaysian get info on islam from right people & not from a thrid party. I have watched a chinese malaysian utube talking about islam but with all the wrong info about islam. Tgis is very sad. We have been living together all this long but still so many misconception. The blame is also on the muslims too. I understand how some of the muslims doesn't represent good islam resulting to the bad image nowadays.

It’s really in the mind, I’m always being impressed by Muslims that the hijab is a choice, an option and is not mandatory. If there is a deeper symbolism attached to the hijab, that has not been clearly communicated to me. I understand that the head covering is part of the uniform in the civil service and you don’t really have an option not to wear it. So there are women in the Malaysian civil service who take off the head covering outside of work. It seems that their conscience is pretty clear. Honestly outside of your close acquaintances, no one else bats an eyelid. However, I can pretty much guess at the reason for the difficulty and sentiments in discarding the hijab. It’s a visual representation of the faith declaration. Discarding the hijab is like saying you are no longer as committed to the faith. Hence the anxiety and panic attacks even at the thought of it. However, it is true that Malaysia has been experiencing increasing radicalisation along with the rest of the world.
I always wanted to become friends with Malay ex Muslims. That doesn’t mean I have never had Malay Muslims as friends I did during my secondary school years. Now I have completely removed them from my life.

On the backlash question, there was an ex-Muslim man who was detained under the Official Secrets Act back in the 1980s or early 90s. He was detained because he was proselytising and many Malays were converting to Christianity because of his testimony. He was tortured and took a long time to recover. They’ve all gone underground.
I would like to add my 2 cents. I'm puzzled why she said the hijab was still relatively unusual in the '90s. From my recollection it was already normalised by the late '80s, like it was considered almost mandatory. Islamic fundamentalism hadn't progressed as far as it has now in Malaysia but with regards to hijabing, that was pervasive. The practice started taking off in Malaysia in the late 70s, early '80s. It spread very quickly and by the late '80s, it was well established.

@@mnbr6884 if you live in Kuala Lumpur the capital city I tell you the place today has many Arabs, Iranians and Africans. I think more and more will come because Malaysia is just about the only place where they can come in and set up settlements. It's really worrying.
@@sinic1978 As far as Iranians, I hear many of them are against the ayatollahs and Islamic extremism. I wouldn't worry about them. I hope they would have a good influence on local Muslims, but as Shias, I doubt it.
Re. Africans, are you sure that's not your racism talking? Africans are a mix of Christians and Muslims and AFAIK hasn't caused any religious trouble in Malaysia.

I am ex muslim from Indonesia. We have a lot number of ex here in Indonesia but in the ID still written Islam as religion cause in Indonesia we must put our religion on it despite we have already converted to other faith or being agnostic but mostly converted to Christianity.

It is easier to live as a Malay Atheists than to live as a Malay Christians here. As long as you don't speak about it. Most of my Malay friends don't even live like a Muslims. They basically atheists, godless and don't care about whether they pray to Allah or not. The Muslims are good people, friendly but not when you talk about other religions or declaring yourself as atheist. Especially by the mention the name Israel. The Malay Muslims are a sensitive people. Child ego. Their shell are easy to be crack open to see what is actually inside.

What if he doesn’t allow her to work, in the modern world it’s difficult to raise children and live on a single income household.
