The lights of Brownsville, across the river shine
May Oscar and his almost 2 years old daughter Valeria, drowned while crossing the river in search of a secure future, find peace on the Matamoros banks.
As an amateur poet, I admire the way Bruce is able to conjure and inhabit this person's ill-fated plight. "The turtles eat the skin from your eyes, so they lay open to the stars" is one of the best lines of poetry I've read.

I agree in part that that the use of that line is part of great poetry, but for me that line is where he sets out his stall in terms of the narrative. There is ugliness in this story. The fact that the line is slightly and clumsily out of time is genius. Once the listener has accepted the fact that this is not a poem and story about sunshine and roses, they are emotionally invested.
I believe that line is actually the least poetically articulate of the whole song and this is deliberate.
For me, this is a work of beauty, ugliness, dashed hopes and loss.

Probably the only song Bruce wrote that starts at the sad ending, then moves backwards like a movie in reverse. It gives the story an extra tension and poignancy.
