i was 10 year old when this happened and remember coming home and found my father in buckets of tears the only time a saw him crying and my mam comforting him , RIP mam and dad and all who perished that day , very moving film , well done

It was a story I grew up with from my late Grandfather, and a story that hit everyone of the time massively.

Still remember to this day and I am 67,this tragic accident never lost my thoughts, above all the others over the years that happened this is one of the few that stuck in memory forever.
I think the reason everyone remembers it is because it was an above ground tragedy, and so many kids died in one go, so sad.

It’s located in south wales, which was the coal mining machine of the UK back in those days.
Hence why it was such a big disaster that resonated all over the UK.

This was a man made disaster which could have been avoided. The mountains of mining spoil were unregulated by the NCB and the catastrophe was exacerbated by heavy continuous rainfall. The ensuing landslide went right through the local school claiming lives of children and teachers alike. An entire generation was lost on this day.
No amount of papering over the cracks will erase the memory of what happened. No one was held accountable for the apalling loss of life and it was quietly forgotten about being a substantial distance from the GB capital.
RIP the children of Wales.

I was only 6 years old when this happened but I have a clear memory of it. Such a terrible tragedy for those little souls to loose their lives. May they all rest in peace and also others that died on that terrible day.

My grandfather regularly mentioned the disaster, being a miner himself.

I was seven at the time of the disaster, i'm sixty five now and can look back on my life, sadly these children were robbed of their lives. I remember they were due to break up for half-term that day, why couldn't that tip have just held out for those extra few hours when the building would have been vacant for the next nine days, it just adds to the tragedy. Nice tribute Steve.

So so sad. I will never forget that dreadful day. Coming home from school in Birmingham, and seeing the pictures on tv. We had a special assembly the next day. I remember the Queen's face when she visited the site. It reflected the feelings of all of us.
@@captaintorch983 I’m not old enough to remember the times, and I can’t imagine what it was like for everyone around back then.
But I do know the feelings were so strong it was passed down to all of us, the queen always regretted her response, which is something I feel the modern monarchy wouldn’t.

@SightsWithSteve The Queen visited Aberfan four times. Her advisers persuaded her not to go immediately, as she herself wanted.
That was her regret.
I did a video in the summer at the graves. It was my saddest episode I've filmed.
You video is fantastic for the views, and footage tou have filmed. Top job. Plus I've subscribed to your channel.

The queen and queen mother came to Aberfan to see the family's the government weren't willing the queen would have non of it she came also sent a cards on anniversaries she never forgot it so touching and haert braking when your there I'm from the valleys

Thank you Yvonne, I did see the comment yesterday, and I do see where you were coming from.
I’m glad it brought a tear, that’s exactly what I wanted to provoke, it means I did a good job on the video & picked the right music.
But please know both locations I filmed had nobody in except a man working on a grave behind where I filmed by his van.
If there had been anybody around I would have waited for the right moment, if that moment arose.
I’d never be disrespectful to visitors of these graves, or any other graves in a cemetery.
On a lighter note, have you heard the Mini 4 Pro in flight in person?.. it’s quite a bit quieter than the Mini 3 Pro, I was well impressed on my first flight of that too.
@@SightsWithSteve You did do a very good job Steve. Yes, it brought tears to my eye. I guess if we didn't fly over such places then people who didn't already know about the disaster still would be oblivious to it. Well done Steve for documenting it professionally. And your footage was perfect. ❤️
@@SightsWithSteve I did hear that the M4P was quieter than the 3. I won't be buying it Steve. Haven't had my M3P for 12months yet. And that is definitely quieter than the M2 . I wondered what DJI will bring out next year.

@@ladyintheskyuk I’d only had my mini 3 pro for 2-3 months 🫣.
Il be honest I can’t really see what they’d add next year, bearing in mind they want to keep premium features for bigger drones.
Literally the only thing I can think of is the Apple ideology, just small incremental changes, like firmware changes that could work on other drones but they keep for the latest model, just like they’ve done on the M3P-M4P

Wonder video. I remember in 1977 being on holiday with my parents in the Forest of Dean. We went for a drive into Wales and mum said she wanted to visit Aberfan. I didn’t know why but she said a bit about it and drove there. Whilst we were walking through the church yard I remembered something. When I was younger, I was in the kitchen playing with my toys while mum cooked tea. Dad came home from work and before he could shut the door mum said, wasn’t it terrible what happened to those school children. She was quite upset. I didn’t understand at the time, I was only two but I realised that day she was talking about Aberfan. It was something that always affected her.

Honestly can’t imagine how it affected those involved, or those that are old enough to remember the tragedy.

Sad to see so many lives were lost, but it’s beautifully maintained, what rather unusual at gravesites in the same age. I like visiting cemeteries myself. One upon a time with my ex husband we maintained a few. I never liked to go before, but since is a place of peace for me.

Prime Minister Harold Wilson (Labour) made the money of the victims fund donated to by ordinary people all around Britain be used to clean up the disaster.
@@gc7820 yes I had heard the sad story of the funds disappearing, though I thought they’d in the last few years been replaced? Though without inflation!

Remember this i was at school when we got news of it we all started collecting for the familys with nobody telling us.

The NCB robbed the disaster fund to pay for the clearance of their rubbish tip ~ Shame on them.
The disaster fund was meant to aid all those poor Welsh people who lost so much.
