Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), with the help of Toby (Ed Sanders), re-opens her pie shop with a special new recipe.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller comes to the big screen in this adaptation directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Timothy Spall, and Alan Rickman. Embittered at having been wrongly imprisoned and determined to seek vengeance against his accusers due to the grim fate that befell his wife and daughter while he was incarcerated, ex-convict Sweeny Todd (Depp) returns to his hometown and opens a modest barber shop. The one thing different about Todd's shop, however, is that no one who walks in for a trim is ever seen again. for the longest time I wondered why Lovette made Toby throw out the beggar woman, because she knows it's Lucy.
marissa hurtado she didn’t know who she was until she saw her dead body later, she says “you!” with honestly such a shock it makes it seems like it’s her first time seeing her.
@@thomasraines1396 Actully, in the play, is made clear Lovett was well aware that Lucy is the beggar, in fact, is subly implied in the final scene that after Lucy poisoned herself and went mad, Lovett kicked her out, and then, when Todd returned, she malicously made sure Todd would not see Lucy, so she could keep Sweeney to herself. That's the thing about Lovett, she is meant to be as guilty of Sweeney's insanity as Turpin, she ruined his life just as much. Lovett is basicily a yandere.

Looking back, this is a really sad scene. Toby looks so happy. With everything he’s been through, this is the life he’s always wanted. A loving home. But it’s all a lie.

its not sad. its a terrifying scene. they’re singing about the pies being so good and theyve got alot of costumers and the costumers are just eating the pies and becoming cannibals without even realizing it. this song gives me goosebumps
She does care for the kid, but from her perspective she's got a good thing going. Her business is doing better than it ever has and she has the man she loves living upstairs. She cares for Toby, but she loves Mr. Todd more and will always choose him. You see this latter in the film when Toby tells her his suspicions about Mr. Todd, she's visibly sad that they'll have to kill Toby, but again, she's not going to risk him warning the authorities and getting herself and Mr. Todd caught.
Yeah dude it is sad that he’s happily promoting her business that wasn’t forced upon him yet he knows nothing, I kinda want to say Ms.Lovett is taking advantage of him but sees him as a potential child since he’s in her fantasy of her ideal life.

Games Fan Well I suppose but I never thought of that as a ‘twist’ or like a ‘big reveal’. Maybe because there’s far bigger twists or that that was pretty much evident from the start.

No way. Sweeney Todd himself and the sailor he came to England with are both pretty great characters in my opinion. You don't have to be a "good guy" to be a great character.

Gotta say, my favorite part of this whole is from 1:25 to 1:35 where Sweeney Todd is seen pacing the porch above the meat pie emporium, like a wolf pacing back and forth as it watches sheep in the fields. The crescendo of the violins along with the big brass horns backing them makes his appearance here like a gothic movie villain, or like the introduction of Chernabog from Fantasia. Truly brilliant!
I also love the music when the beggar women goes up to his barbershop at the end of the film and the camera settles on Todd in the doorway. That big, ominous sound.

This musical did not get enough credit. It was beautifully done, the music was original, elegantly put together & the acting was amazing. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

To anyone wondering, yes she did know who the beggar woman was, being Lucy Barker. She lied about her being dead, even during Todd's singing while he gets his razors back, she says she always had a fondness for him. It's not a theory, it's a fact that she knew the beggar was Lucy
Except if you rewatch it carefully she never said she died. All she said was that she ate arsenic and Todd just assumed that it must've killed her.

@@FenrirAldebrandYes, but she still lied. Lucy got poisoned at the party, because in the scene from the party you see her drink something and fall on the couch, after which Turpin rapes her. In addition, she lied about the pharmacy and that she was an alleged heroine, that she tried to stop her, but that Lucy died, because she tried to stop her, but failed, means "too late, she didn't want to listen to me and killed herself ." She played the heroine in her version of the story, when in fact she knew about Lucy on the street and didn't help her and everything.

Loved Mrs Lovette but still can’t believe she knew the old woman was his wife all along and didn’t say anything. I know this is an old play but this film is probably one of my favorite modern tragedies. Usually I hate tragedies as it’s a sad ending but this film wraps everything up so that even though it’s a sad outcome everything seems to happen the way it should
Holy crap... this is the first time I realized that Toby sung his part from the stage version in the final chorus. It's so quiet.

OH, I have been avoiding this because Helena sings Mrs.Lovett so high and learning the part I don't need that in my head xD I was also sad this number got cut but they did gave a nod to the "knock Knock Knock" situation and I just noticed! It's brilliant. Just at the "Fresh Supplies" you hear the 3 knocks on the music. How clever and cool, really ♡
I absolutely adore this musical and the stage show, Helena and Johhny do amazing, and I love this comment section your all awesome have a great day and remember to check your pies for thumbs and always tip your barber or they'll tip you out of the chair ;)

When she said to throw out the beggar, I think she knew it was about Lucy, because we find out...in addition, she rummaged around the basement looking for evidence of their murderous business, or at least she tried.
Example of great directing here. All the candle lamps are red giving a very negative and off putting vibe. Love how this movie is almost black and white had it not been for all the red!
Toby's actor is really good, mainly for the reason that he acts just like boys would have in Victorian England. Boys tended to act more like men compared to today.
Interesting. Toby’s singing the same tune for Lovett’s pies as he did with Pirelli’s miracle elixir, another product that wasn’t what it seemed. A clever gimmick to save time from writing a whole new song.

Heartbreaking to be on Lucy’s shows. Being thrown away knowing this woman knows who you are
I'm disturbing happy to see Toby settled down happily working for Mrs Lovett in a steady business. Keep wondering if it could've gone on with Toby, Anthony and Johanna working at the shop as well - Johanna would bring in more customers with her pretty face and Anthony looks like he'd be a hard worker when he set his mind to it. None of them ever need know the secret to the pies.

I don't understand all the bitching about Toby being a kid in the movie. The script, characters, and even Sondheim himself refer to him as a boy. He is not a mentally-handicapped man. The only reason he is played by a young adult in stage productions, is because the role is challenging, but if your really paying attention, you can tell by their voices that they are playing the part of a child. Everyone clear on this?
