My thoughts are keep your political views to yourself. I don't need to know about your hatred towards the right or conservative media. We had an entire summer of burning churches, violent riots, killings. Meanwhile the mainstream media lying headlines read "peaceful protests" as a building was literally burning and looters were robbing stores. So keep your politics to yourself.

Wonderful video essay. Tomorrow Never Dies was so ahead of its time, especially when you look at the global news and social media in present day. The film has aged like a fine wine and even beat Mission: Impossible Fallout to the punch with Halo jumping and a remotely operated BMW.

IT has everything a good Bond movie is supposed to have
      Great pre credit action sequence
      Great title sequence
A villain trying to pit two world powers to start WW3
Acting like the UK is a superpower
      Cool gadgets
      A cool car
TWO cool car chases, each one the equal of anything in any other Bond film.

Watched this last night for the first time in yeeeears and I gotta say, this might be the most underrated film in the series. The action is massive and top notch. It’s got one of the best Bond Women of all time. A great villain with a distinct goal. Sick gadgets, and a really fun henchman in that old German assassin scene. It baffles me why so many fans diss this film. Loved this essay too!

But also understood one of its major flaws for me: GE's score of Serra is a lacklustre and detracts from film's atmosphere, while Arnold was fantastic as Bond composer and TND is one of his better works.

Maybe it was just me. In my Jr. and Sr. year of H.S. I spent half the day working on computers. This is going to age me but I don't care. I graduated in 1987. I was the top student two years in a row on those ancient machines. It came with perks though. If the teacher left the class everyone knew I was in charge. It also came with a recommendation to work at the IRS on the weekends while still going to school. I digress, I love this movie and wish more people would appreciate it what it accomplished. Peace

@@FilmSpeak I grew on Brosnan films. He was THE Bond for me, followed by Moore in my childhood, I didn't understood Dalton for example, and Connery's looked dated. Since then my tastes have shifted completely, Dalton and Connery are the Bonds for me now, so are their film tenures I consider the best (add OHMSS, CR and scenes from other Craig's for perfect cocktail). Still, the sentimentals is still there. Brosnan surely looks the part. And his films are FUN. For kid me, DAD was great, and I was later surprised by the amount of hate it gets. For kid me, Brosnan films were the best. Also, 90s ACTION in the same cocktail with Mooresque quips. Great.

Seeing previews on tv for this movie was my introduction to James Bond as a kid. That moment when he’s in bed with the woman and answers the phone “Bond here.”, and the shot of them riding the motorcycle along the collapsing deck were the first real images I remember having of a James Bond movie. I was too young to go see the movie, but we got an N64 and started playing the GoldenEye game soon after that, so I did play a video game before I ever saw any of the movies. Then started watching them, starting with renting GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies when it came out on video. I think the remote controlled car in TND was my favourite part of both films.
Brosnan was my inception for Bond, so he is kinda still the most quintessential image of Bond for me, even though Craig has easily overtaken him as my favourite Bond. GoldenEye, TND and Die Another Day (which is MY personal choice for the most underrated Bond film, IMO) will always have a special place in my heart. I don’t really enjoy World Is Not Enough unfortunately, though I think the pre-title sequence is one of the better ones. Certainly one of the longest ones (No Time To Die just blew it out of the water for THE longest, though.)
I also think Carver has one of the most iconic Bond villain lines for me: “Let the mayhem begin!”

This is my sisters favorite Bond film. At the end of video she immediately cited her fav parts; Bond’s reaction to being able to re- inflate the tires during the parking building sequence; and during the motorcycle sequence the reactions of a woman apparently making love to an unseen partner, after she sees them race through her dwelling, she seems to return to HER activities with gusto.(we call this woman Ms. Kinky). And my sister most definitely dis-agrees with you about the ending; she sees it as a natural result of what they went through. And we leave you with our thoughts on this final ‘debriefing’ scene: First come ‘de-briefs’,then comes ‘de-BRA’.

Excellent Tube, Griffin. I really like your take on this film and Quantum, both of which are way better than fanboys say.
I'd like to share three thoughts --
    1. Many people seem to miss a major flaw of this movie which is also, oddly, its strength: it's a remake of one of the best films in the franchise, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. The beginning and endings are identical, and the entire foreign agent angle.
    2. When speaking of the score I'm amazed you didn't spend more time on the parking garage sequence. The music and visuals are INTENSE.
    3. I'm indifferent to Sheryl Crow's music but this song really REALLY grabs you. "Darling I'm killed... I'm in puddle on the floor... waiting... for you... to return." It's a flash forward into the story of Paris being murdered and James nowhere to be found. A missing scene of foreshadown. It's a WOW.
    4. I enjoyed Bond and Yeoh becoming a couple. Kinda breaks down the 'must be a white lady' thing rather well.

"Tomorrow Never Dies" and "Quantum of Solace" : Underappreciated, second installments of a new Bond.

This was my second favorite Bond movie growing up and I got all the nuance the first go round so I didn’t need this video to justify how underrated this entry is. But I watched the review and while I’m fine with you comparing Carver to Murdoch, I couldn’t help but think you only view Fox Media as an entity to portray as villains, as if somehow the likes of CNN & MSNBC aren’t culpable in the chaos that ensued in 2020 BEFORE the ”insurrection”. And I won’t act like the guy who got elected isn’t responsible for the current wealth of problems like high gas prices, millions of people quitting their jobs, undocumented citizens trying to get benefits, and a pandemic that shows no signs of going away despite more people than not adhering to the FORCED mandates.

This is my best Brosnan's and top-7 Bond movie ever. While I have love-hate relationships with Bond formula, this film is extremely formulaic to the t (there's almost nothing but formula the whole film), but executes it so great you really feel those Arnold's fanfares in your soul. This is cheerful spectacle, Bond at its prime, unlike Craig's art. Everything is there. That's why I love this this film ever since my childhood.

Man I feel like I say this every time I check out one of your videos, but this might be my favourite one! I love how you explored the impact this film had on Brosnan’s run and the franchise as a whole.
It’s true that Tomorrow Never Dies did have a different more modern feel than GoldenEye in many ways. I of course agree GoldenEye is the best of the Brosnan run (and just the best of the pre-Craig films overall imo), but I think Tomorrow Never Dies and his following two films are all very underrated. This film in particular I think probably did have just the absolute best action of the franchise overall until the Craig films, and it really holds up.
I did not know that Izabella Scorupco was ever considered to return as Natalya Simonova in this film in what ended up being Teri Hatcher/Paris Carver’s role… but like you said I’m not sure I would want her to go out like that since she is one of the all time great Bond girls imo.
    Amazing video!

It's crazy to think that the only thing that separates Carver from real life media moguls and business owners is the use of shady mercenaries.(or atleast getting caught using them) The scary thing is that if you would take just that one thing away from him Carver would still remain a really bad person who would have a huge negative influence on the world and would in all sence still be countable as a Bond villain, except legally:D

It was certainly the last 'fun' Bond film. After that The World is Not Enough tried (I'd say unsuccessfully) to explore themes of revenge, trauma, trust etc. Even Die Another Day attempted this. It worked much better in the Craig era. This was a more straightforward 'romp' in that sense. Not the best Bond film, but I really enjoy watching it.

@@putinscat1208 The opening's cool. I actually think there's some good parts in Die Another Day. The scenes when Bond goes to Cuba, meets with the guy and first meets Jinx are especially well written, acted and shot, and Bronsnan generally looks relaxed and Bondian. Then the plastic surgery subplot happens (seriously, they literally just took the basic plot of Diamonds are Forever) and then Bond drives an invisible car, rides a CGI wave and the villain wears wears a robot suit and shoots lasers from his fingers...

Brosnan started out so strong end ended so weak that his two films in between often get overlooked. But TND is a great Bond film, and in several ways it is more "Bond-esque" than GoldenEye. One of the big improvements between GE and TND is the score. Eric Serra was not a good fit for Bond - David Arnold was PERFECT. About the only flaw in the TND score is the theme song which was apparently changed somewhat late in the game. Sheryl Crow's "Tomorrow Never Dies" is a decent tune - probably in the top half of my best Bond themes list, but KD Lang's "Surrender" is the best "rejected" Bond theme of all time. I can see why the change was made - Crow had more star power at the time - but neither of these songs had any potential to be a hit single outside of the film, and the fact that cues from "Surrender" appear throughout the rest of the score make it a better fit.
No Bond film is perfect - and TND suffers from something that was common in the Brosnan films: A great idea that only gets lip service - often just abandoned. In DAD Bond gets captured and tortured - and it is all completely forgotten by the second act. In TWINE a man can feel no pain due to a bullet that will eventually kill him, and not only is there no payoff from that concept, but the man appears to actually feel pain in the final fight.... and in TND we have a former lover returning on the arm of the villain...but she is killed and never thought of again.
This timidity to stray too far outside the proven formula strapped the Brosnan films and prevented them from reaching their full potential. This is something that was clearly remedied in the Craig films, but in my opinion they may have strayed too far and forgotten how Bond films are supposed to be fun. Brosnan had the right mix of Connery's toughness and Moore's charm, he could deliver the one-liners while still exploring deeper aspects of the character. He was held back by the scripts. Now that they have proven that you can step outside the comfort zones and still make a great Bond film, I hope they can find a more balanced tone for the next person to take on the roll.

36:43 This makes him a brutal killer. The attempted execution of Renard in TWINE almost made him a cold blooded murderer. Killing Elektra King in TWINE, did make him a cold blooded murderer.
So, anybody that says Brosnan's Bond wasn't dark like Dalton or Craig..take a gander at these three scenes, plus, the way he kills Onatopp in Goldeneye.
