Very interesting that not wearing shoes makes such a big difference, I can see some people risking cutting their feet for the much reduced sound it creates
Apparently Graceful also gives "decreased chance to trip while run/sprint vaulting a low fence or by zombies by 10%". This, combined with what you said, makes it vastly superior to the other "stealth" trait, Inconspicuous.
WOOOOOO Yeah Baby! That’s what I’ve been waiting for! I knew graceful wasn't terrible all along, but damn am I glad to know it actually makes a more massive difference than I thought. I'm ashamed I didn't know that shoes made a difference.. but it doesn't matter much unless you're sprinting, no?
Sprinting with no shoes is questionable, as soon as you get a scratch from not wearing shoes you lose the ability to sprint. No shoes is nice because you can start playing the super stealth right away, and as your skills level up you can put them back on.
Something I’d love to see added to the game is a visual stealth system integrated in with clothing - wearing hunting camouflage in forests, creating robes to dye concrete-grey and brown in urban areas, etc. Maybe it would allow for overpowered stealth builds but it would be fantastic for the apocalypse fantasy, and it’s evocative of many characters and moments from fiction.
Waiting for a sneaking suit mod to drop Once that happens I'll make myself a Naked Snake or two to survive in the apocalypse and eat random shit I find in the forest
This makes the sneaking action seem much more useful than it really is. zombies are frequently in groups looking in multiple directions, and whenever they are alone (or even 2 or 3) it really is quite unnecessary to sneak attack them anyway since you can just push them down then 1-shot on the ground. I suppose it could help a bit if you have nearly no fitness or strength, but in that kind of situation you'll have a whole other level of difficult experience.
It would also be nice to see different modifiers on the shoes themselves. Sneakers only slightly increasing your step sounds (haha, sneakers), shoes by quite a bit since they are supposed to be leather dress shoes and those are *loud*, and then boots might be somewhere inbetween.
@Ik When I was in the Scouts we were taught how to make moccasins. I don't remember how but they were really cool. I had moccasin slippers for a long while too. Would be really cool to see more stuff like that.
I had a very interesting situation that happened to me one time with Lightfooted and Sneak Lvl 9 along with Graceful and Conspicuous. I was aimlessly wandering around Louisville trying to lvl up my nimble, lightfooted, sneak and long blade skill. While I was walking about, I don't see that many zombies as I hope there would be. I saw a car and decided to Spam its honk noise. Tons of zombies decided to check it out, a few of them were even Joggers (Playing a modded pve server). Out of nowhere I decided to get out of the car and sneak run around near them but they didn't seem to actually pay me no mind until I smack one of them with a melee. I'm extremely impressed but also dumbfounded as to how and why those zombies doesn't seem to notice me at all even if i was near them. It's as if they are more interested on the source of the noise rather then the guy who caused it.
Interesting, but sound I don’t think is the problem I’m having. I used to play years ago and came back to it just yesterday. Now the moment I leave the starting house I’ll have a handful of zombies bee lining towards me from beyond my sight. This quickly turns into a train as I flee.
You have to lose their line of sight. Can't just out range them anymore. Best done by blocking their vision on one corner and then hiding behind another before they get to that first corner.
Amazing indepth explanation of how the sneaking and lightfooted mechanic work in the game, thank you for this video. But the question is; does the sound queue created affect players as well in PvP?
Too bad they don't have a "Tough Feet" trait in the vanilla game like in CDDA. Then you could just walk around with no shoes on without worrying about fucking your characters feet up.

Don't quote me on this, but if I'm remembering correctly the main north/south street in rosewood is around 600 tiles from the fire station to the highway on the other side of the town. I don't think the house alarm pulls zombies from that far way though.
Nice guide. There is something about sound is unexplained though (not in this particular video but generally) and i would like to know. What is the sound distribution of running while your character exhausted and can't actually run (just speed up a little, or doesn't) Does it count as running sound-wise?
Via exhaustion it does properly do the walking sound if you press shift to run but cannot speed up. When you are overloaded or injured making you go slower but you can still speed up a bit by running it does the full running sound. So I would assume if you get any speed increase it will be the full loudness of running.
So for a noob like me, who just got the game recently, I found a build I recommend thats very forgiving for new players...you take fitness, strength to get 8 fitness 8 strength, and you take graceful and inconspicuous so you're good at everything. For negatives, the ones I found that give the least impact for a noob like me is slow healer, pacifist (slower weapon xp only), hard of hearing (extremely minor penalty), slow learner. Its amazing O-O

Hey Retanaru, no idea if you'll see this, but would you mind explaining how to access the sound debug settings that you display in your videos? I wanted to check out the practical implication of some car/gun sounds in game but can't seem to find any info on that debug option.
In your steam library right click the game and go to properties. Add "-debug" without the quotes into the launch options. Close that and launch the game. Start up a new save or load into an old one. Once inside press F11 if it hasn't already went to a debug screen. On the top left you want to uncheck "break on error" then click on options and at the bottom click the WorldSound one. In there check WorldSound.Render. Press F11 again to exit the menu.
Welp, I won't be sneaking quite as much now lmao. Altho, at my base, I'm infinitely set at the Gen Store in the top northwest by the river west of Riverside so I only get excitement when I go for supply runs (which isn't necessary, I just get bored. Rip. Come on devs, get those npcs up, Lua and c++ isn't hard)
Hold the phone... If running with sneak doesn't increase your chance per tick .. isn't that still fewer ticks per nTiles gap? (less time spent crossing gap = fewer ticks)
Running while sneaking doesn't increase the loudness of the footsteps compared to walking while sneaking. Nothing to do with the visibility "ticks" for zombies to spot you from the other video.
Recently, out of pure curiosity, I decided to test out the butterfingers trait (with + without unlucky and with + without dexterous + lucky) and my character didn't seem to really drop any of the thousands of items I had transferred.
