- Meet Ben. Ben is driving his 1992 Brazil-spec Volkswagen Kombi from Tierra del Fuego, Chile, to Alaska. While in town, Ben stopped by The Smoking Tire podcast (link below) and let Matt take a spin around Venice in Matt's first Microbus experience!
Ben on The Smoking Tire Podcast!
shoutengine.com...
That guy seems like the most chill dude in the world.
Thanks Joey - Hanging out with Matt tends to have that kind of effect on people ;)
They actually only stopped selling these in Brazil because VW engineers couldn't fit ABS and Airbags to it (at least with costs low enough to keep it profitable to sell). On its last days the Kombi received a water cooled 1.6L engine and a front radiator. This modern version could run on gas and/or ethanol at any rate, and it is famous for catching on fire once in a while (not like 458 Italias, but in a close rate)...
I actually was rear ended by one Kombi once because the driver on it decided it was better to take the hit on my car and lift his legs to avoid getting crippled than trying to brake at all....
mafracao gotta respect that kind of quick thinking.
This guy, his van, and his dog are all pretty awesome. The Smoking Tire turns into The Smoking Van.
Don't think of it as a slow van, think of it as a really fast house.
This was an absolute joy to watch. Best of luck to Ben on his journey to Alaska. I'm gonna guess he goes through at least 10 more engines before reaching there.
I like how the owner stops to make out with his dog at 2:25 while Matt is struggling to get the van started. lmao He had no idea.
Many years ago I got my 77 VW camper van 2L bus going a 150 KMH going down hill in neutral
Different is good! Nice ride and stories to go along.
Dude seems to know a lot about those busses. He ought to swap the engine out for a little four banger and boost it. Thatd make for an interesting trip!
I've heard many people swap in Subaru boxers, which makes crazy power to weight
now you're giving me ideas for the next project ;)
Darren G. i've seen a few with some porsche engine swaps. One even did a wheelie. =D
Brent Moore porsche motors are not as good a built vvw motors!
You can also put a suburu svx six cylinder in them...actually that might just be for the vanagon I don't know if it would fit in the kombi.
When the dog and Ben started licking each other's face my heart melted. Great car, awesome story. I'm gonna go write something on this.
Brings back memories! I grew up in Brazil in the 1980s and all school buses were Kombis back then. Spent countless hours in these Kombis going to and from school!
This story brings back wistful memories of my '72 that I drove with two of my buddies from Kelowna B.C. Down to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, many years ago. These vans just ask for adventure. Mine had dual carbs that never stayed in sync. Loved it even though it was a bit of a headache at times. But then, what adventure isn't from time to time. Good luck on your journey.
You can keep the wheel straight with your gut when your cruising down the highway
JasonSleiman4thewin 1992 VW bus with autopilot function!!..
JasonSleiman4thewin I imagine that feature has led many a hippie to find other useful things to do with their hands :)
TheSmokingTire that's why they're so much play in the steering because when they're high and start to see turns in the road that aren't there they can turn the wheel and not kill anyone
TheSmokingTire I see what you did there lol
Yeah then it will cause internal bleeding in an accident
Great episode, both the dude and the car seems cool as shit.
Join our piracy!
I'm glad you drove this one. It has soe charm and it was fun to watch. Thanks!
Love the wheels, Matt. I also appreciate how you own and modify a car that many watching could reasonably afford. Cheers.
I've been following Ben for quite some time now, and I love his adventures... I loved his face through this entire video, because I was making the same face. You know what that face means? Its the "Oh shit, the van is going to break any second now" face.
I really enjoy the irony of having Prius commercials before a smoking tire video. But hey, TST gets paid so its just a bit of ironic money :D Great video and great podcast with Kombilife. Alaska is super cute too
Andrew Cathcart support The Smoking Tire! Buy a prius!
I'll tell them The Smoking Tire sent me!
Andrew Cathcart and look at 6:33 on the right lol
This one take was fucking awesome lol, havent watched a full video for a while, but this was enjoyable viewing
Ben is a smart dude, this is some great free publicity for his channel, i have never seen that many Priuses in one video
4:44 - Z3!!! I own a '97 2.8 ...what a pleasure. Has sports exhaust and 18 inch wheels. Next up is brakes and suspension. Fun times. Nice Kombi!
Matt gets a reach around from Jenson Button's younger brother :-D
This could have gone on longer but now I just need to watch dude's RUclips.
This is my vote for more One Take videos filmed in Venice or other places in LA. I like seeing the city because I've never been. There are tons of other vehicles that would work on those roads, too. Old luxury sedans for instance.
This has to be one of the coolest cars you've ever tested, and the owner is seriously badass.
Awesome! This was one of my favorite ones yet.
I like all your One-Take-videos. But his one is just fantastic! Isn't it just great to see how much fun you can have with a car?
Definitely one of my favorite videos! cool story, cool car! and have now subscribed to kombi life!
Hahaha this is awesome! Way to step away for the norm for some fun! Really enjoyed this!
By far the best. Thanks again.
I've been tracking Ben and Alaska and, frankly, it's surreal to see him on your channel. Even weirder would have been if you all drove over to Jay Leno's garage with the van and did an episode of that, picking up the guys from Roadkill along the way.
THAT would have been gangster!
ok this week has been interesting ! i like that there is no possability that we could guess what matt may drive next! very cool ride so humble , great to see old style iron on the road . this guy has most sertinly saved this buses ars , well done
Now I need to know what the worst car you've ever driven is.
Audi A3 TDI ;)
ravesilly I believe its the Modifred Camry he once drove?
Laferrari
ravesilly
Ford MK4 Escort n/a diesel
laskopivo93 the one from yesterday's video
my ex boss used to have one back in 1995. It was and it one of the most fun car that I've every driven
Season 1 down of the #kombilife and I can happily say I'm hooked! Lovely work man 👌
Actually, the T2s were still in production in Brazil until December 2013, less than a year and a half ago. They had switched to water cooled engines at that point, but even the air cooled ones stuck around until late 2005.
Also, I'm assuming he meant "60's" at 4:48. The T2 was introduced in 1967, there wouldn't be any body parts dating from the 50s on it.
reminds me of my day in a Nissan Vanette. cursed for the first 15 minutes because of the lack of power steering, the gas pedal that was stuck to the floor so you could only accelerate by pushing on it with every ounce of force you had, and the insane lack of speed. and when i got back home in the evening i started looking for one. the search still continues to this day...
Loved this video.... What a cool guy...
I love this guy. I've subscribed his channel and it's a blast. I love it and Latin America budget isn't what you would expect. I remember going to San Francisco last year and visited red woods and Yosemite. It's was an eye opening experience. I thought I wasn't a nature guy until I've visited. Ben should come to east coast! I'd join you in your adventure.
best one take so far !
Been following Bens channel and its an epic kombi! you need to try out the bus with a Subaru motor!
Or come to Sweden and drive my 78 Bus with a JPM Motorsports 2056 type iv motor....Dynoed at 120 ponies! lol.
oh priceless, i always want to see matt's reaction to a brazilian "cars", but i tought it was absolutly impossible to have it.
Fun video for sure. More one-takes plz! :D
Maybe I'll try to bring out my TR6. I've always wanted to drive it in the canyons, or just anywhere besides New England.
When you showed that slack line scene an ol Eminem lyric popped into my head: "I hang with a buncha hippies and wacky tobacco planters."
one of my fave podcasts was with ben
coolest episodes so far!!!!!
i wish i can go on this adventure! seems like too much fun
Man this was the best One Take :D
I am subscribing again because of this!
This is fucking awesome. Good luck with your travels my friend
I've been waiting for one of these
No heating, that`ll be great when he gets to Alaska and the last leg of the trip......
EVILSPAWN1003 I can see why there's no heat, since its Brazilian spec,Brazil is hot year round
dawicked2k8 The heating in aircooled VW`s is pretty shit no matter what spec it is.
Oh man, want to buy one of those at some point :) Maybe my next project ;)
The back streets remind me of Californication.
Was that Hank getting a ticket in the GT3?
I saw a story on vice sports about a guy that lives in his vw van, only difference is he's a millionaire baseball player! Im considering getting one now, or more specifically a 1980s toyota van!
cute doggy! You should let him drive it some time :)
Mention the dog in the description and title and you'll get lots of views!
Love the hasta Alaska videos keep it up ben!
disc brakes?! Good humour like the podcast.Enjoyable.Cool to be driving through L.A. onboard.
Best one take ever!!
This was.. awesome!
No there's a story, good find Matt!
this is awesome matt
It's actually kind of nice to see you drive some pretty sketchy cars on here. I like the Zero Fucks Given RX-7 and Jettamino videos. If I had to guess the worst car was probably one of those two.
Ben Olson Doubtful man, Matt seemed like he enjoyed those cars because they were different. The general consensus so far seems to be the Audi A3 TDi
I'm not saying those weren't fun; because they sure as hell looked fun. I'm going off the basis that it broke down because that's exactly what you would expect those cars to do.
Nice interview... What are you going to do for heat in Alaska?
Alaska the dog is adorable.
Is Matt baked or is it just me??
he was just vibing that guy hard haha
Definitely baked
Love the van Ben! Would love one of these vans. What route are you taking through Canada?
guy seems super cool.
If you ever get a trucker horn in your Mustang you should definitely put up a video about it because I've always wanted to put one in my car too lol
10:42 Its hard to see, but there is a 60`s beetle parked behind the fence on the left.
Awesome. Simply awesome.
TheSmokingTire Kombi Life Awesome Dude, Awesome van, Awesome Vid. I hope you were paying for the coffee Matt!!!
Hey Matt after seeing this video I guess I can bring you my 2013 chevy explorer van to review..lol being that some old lady totalled my 2000 titanium silver m roadster (with suspension mods).
Matt, any chance you would do a few of these One Take's when you are back on the east coast in Greenwich? Not sure if the roads are as good as they are out in Cali, but it would give the opportunity for some of us east coasters to have our cars driven.
Naah Mat you needed to go for a surf to really round off your drive experience!!!The whole notion of having your accommodation as your wheels on a surf trip....will never die. Drive there ,surf there, sleep there repeat the process.
Loving this vid
What a cool van and a cool project going to check out his videos right now... Keep it gangsta? Lol
these look fun as hell
My wife as a kid use to ride the vw bus from k to high school in beiruit. This is the unofficial school bus of lebanon..lol
Such a cute dog
Hahaa. That's awesome. Did the same edit as if it were in the canyons. Haha
Cool video Matt ! you really seemed like you enjoyed the VW bus:).Sometimes you dont need 400hp vehicles to have fun:) Subbed to +Kombi Life👍
What an odd spot to wear-out a shirt.)
Subbed for the venture.
Good luck in Canada and Alaska in that thing.
This looks like a GTA location lol
+Chemaphex Actually, they're in the Venice Beach area in this video. In GTA 5, it's known as Vespucci Beach. So yeah, it is a GTA location.
That was awesome.
Hey! All the Miata hate makes the baby Jesus cry...
Ben, don't pull a Chris McCandless on us.
Best one take EVER ... :) Btw, you should have taken it to the canyons ... :D
what the worst car you drove???
He said it was a dodge nitro in another video
Everyone should follow him
wow that camper is cool!
Matt what cars do you own at the moment if you don't mind me asking ?
GRN240SX www.wheelwell.com/profile/54a87c441b035a475a2f2d8c/garage
Does it understeer at the limit?
Very recently, a restored 1960 Kombi Samba(?)fetched $202,000(Australian dollars) at auction.
You refering to the high mileage Lexus on regular car review? You should do a one take on that ting!
About the description: Tierra del Fuego is an Argentinian province, not Chilean
It's actually divided between both countries
I drove one of these once and it was so damned slow! But this one goes well considering all the batteries and stuff it's lugging. It really isn't about the speed, not in these :)
Hey what kind of dog is that? Great dog and sweet ride.
That thing is begging for a subaru flat four engine .
I heard how many engine changes he had from listening to the Podcast. Its def a shit box, but I respect it & Ben's story & quest. Keep it up Farah
