Nice video! I ve done my 87 FXR many times thru the years. I don't have some of those extra spacers in my wheels.Mine have always been pretty straight forward,I put new races & bearings in using the OEM Spacer Tube and when wheels are torqued they spin freely and no lateral play that I can feel .I always feel the hub after riding first few times to make sure its not running hot.
There is a little fork that keeps the bearing tool in place while you flip the wheel over. Jims spacer №2388 It helps a lot. Also, I'm surprised you didn't heat the wheel before hammering the outer race.
Perfect...Just what i forgot was the top hat spacer. So when i tightened the axel nut the bearings locked up and the rim would not spin. Im good to go now.
learn a lot thanks just did a wheel on a 99 replaced bearings like i did before wheel lock up had to replace all parts and axel found out what went i did put top hat in wrong
Hey Mr. Grim ! I know this video is few years old and your website stock has probably changed. I see you do not sell the 41-0006 Wheel Spacer Shim Assortment Kit any longer. Where Can I find one? I have tried every key word search online to no avail...
Doing my bearings, with just one thin shim and the top hat washer I get zero end play. When I removed the wheel and old bearings there were two shims and the top hat. Wondering what's up!?
I have a question for my rv trailer, i changed my bearings, races, drums, so everything is new. I took a dial indicator meeter for the first time to look the play I have. Tell me if the way I did it is ok. Well the meter was magnet to my frame and the pin of the gauge was right on the top side of my drum, right to the edge of the drum, at 10'' to 12'' circle. I push my drum side to side and I got 0.002 and sometime 0.003. I know I'm in the range that it suppose to be but I want to make sure I put the dial indicator the right way. An other question tell me if I'm right, let say I have 0.002 or 0.003 from the 12'' drum do you thing if we were able to measure the play right between the bearing we could find around 0.001? And let say if I was gona be able to put the dial meter right againt the metal wheel or the tire we could expect to have like 0.005 or maybee a little bit more cause the wheel is bigger size than the drum and the bearing itself ? I'm trying to make myself a template or kind of a model for next services, if this is right the way I did it, I will keep in mind 0.002 to 0.003 from the drum is a good play for bearings, so not to loose or not too tight. I really like your channel very informative and you explain very well. Thanks.
Just watched your video and would like to know if the tool you used was a Jims tool and if so what number was it? Also what is the number of the timken race you removed. I have a 1978 FLH with race #LM11910 and the Jims tool I was led to believe was the right one is too large for the race.
Where did you get the shim kit? Trying to set the end play on my 98 Fatboy after new bearings and races. Old .032 spacer was all messed up. Would like to find an assortment like this to dial it in. Great video. Thanks
I set the end play, after install I had .020 side to side play after install. Like a little wobble in the wheel. It is odd end play set and the wheel would wiggle if you grab the front and push, grab rear and pull it would move .020. All new parts too. Any hints it's on a 73 flh.
Great easy to understand video. This will help me a lot when I go to repack my Softail wheel bearings this summer. Hopefully they look good because I don't have a race remover if I need to replace the bearings, and subsequently, the races. One question...is it possible to install the wheel back on your bike (without the seals installed,) in order to check the end play? I don't have a big-ass vise to use in my garage. Liked & sub'd. EDIT: Actually, I just checked my H-D service manual, and they say to grease the bearings and install on the bike before checking the end play.
I’m having an issue with setting the end play. I have wheel mocked on vice with dry new bearings and races.. new hub sleeve as well, but when I torque it down I have no end play at all. I had a spare hub sleeve which I shortened thinking it’d give me some play and it never did. Am I not understanding something? Any incite would be awesome. Thank you.
Is it OK to check end-play with the shims and top-hat spacer installed on the brake disc side when your wheel specifically requires the spacers and top-hat to be installed on the sprocket side?
How is proper endplay accomplished when you don't have access to a dial indicator. I'm sure there must be a common sense method some shade tree mechanic has come up with....
You work to hard. Next time. Just put Raceway in Freezer for 2 hours. And it will fall into the Bore. Once it Expands. Just Reseat Raceway to be sure it's seated.
Just the tip got me in trouble!
Good video, Kid. Straightforward and down to earth

Same here
Extremely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to share. Cheers from Western Australia.
Thanks man!

Yeah I never had that tool but it works. I have heated up the wheels in the past. Most of the time it is not necessary.
Perfect...Just what i forgot was the top hat spacer. So when i tightened the axel nut the bearings locked up and the rim would not spin. Im good to go now.
Yeah shit won't work with out it :)

Excellent vid. Just what I needed for my wheel upgrade.
Thank you!
Tried the website, but couldn’t find the bearings, removal tool, or shims.

Wish I'd seen this video earlier. Question, just what to make sure: Does this apply to the '97 H-D Softail Custom front wheel?
where do I find a set of timken bearing race removal tools? That looks slick.
Jims or try my pal at Tooth and Nail he may be making some now. Also George's tools
1993flhtc front wheel how does spacers and shims go in and which ones go where.

I’m hoping u mean .002 which is 2 thousandths .02 is 2 hundredths which is way too much end play
.020" is too much we run >002-.006" you will feel .020" shim it!
Does it really matter what side you put the top hat shim?
What about dual disk front wheels? Does it matter what side it’s on?
Some wheels have larger hole on one side. But I like to run it on the opposite side of the disc.
Brother, can't u also replace these with sealed bearings?
not on 99' earlier wheels. There may be a bearing out there but I haven't done it or looked.

yep - just set up the dial indicator and test away
Grim Parts Co how would u use the dial indicator with the wheel on your bike?
Great video. Thanks.

U need to add shims
Longer to get more end play. Sorry I am no good at responding.
What brand grease are you using? I couldn't make out what you said in the video.
We us SIG 2000 from Wurth
Is it OK to check end-play with the shims and top-hat spacer installed on the brake disc side when your wheel specifically requires the spacers and top-hat to be installed on the sprocket side?
Yes is should be the same end play either way.
Where do you get that grease at? Is it waterproof?
Wurth SIG 2000
BUt any good grease will do.
Come on man we’re not all mechanics that have all these fancy tools. We wanna know how to do it the backyard way

Thx, got'er done...;-)
Sorry I didn't respond....Honestly I have no idea It's such a small measurement.

That works great if you have time. In a shop time is money, and you have to do things right and fast. Thanks!
