COMMUNITY is everything! Despite hiccups and adversity, we still have each other! What's one of your fav moments from this launch that centers around our community and camaraderie? 🐵
@@JobsJournal I think the design that centers around community and camaraderie that is my personal favorite from this launch would be the Masamune Kasno x junaida Himitsu Stranger covers/Purple through the Night since it's a collaboration between audio art (the band) and visual art (the adorable illustrations). You could also argue the One Piece, Spy family, and Mother collaborations are about community as well by serving those fan bases. From Yoseka's live stream, a Hobonichi staff member explained the "Only is Not Lonely" cover quote to be about embracing individuality as well since we are all so different so you don't have to feel alone in your unique tastes. Really, I think by Hobonichi releasing soooo many different designs each year they're catering to the community by providing a wide variety and giving a better chance of planners feeling personalized to each person as people go "that cover is so me!" As rough as this launch was for some, I hope people keep that in mind and are kind to the Hobonichi team because they really do care about their products being used by the community in a way that brings individuals joy.
The glitch in the system gave me an opportunity to really think about what I wanted to purchase and not overbuy. Everything I wanted was still available and I didn’t lose any sleep over it.
Same. I already had an idea of what I wanted and fortunately only the English version (which I couldn’t care any less about) sold out by the time I went to place my order the next day, I was able to order everything I wanted and didn’t go overboard because while I was waiting for the page to work I realised there were things I didn’t need and didn’t let FOMO to eat me. It was nice.
The Hobonichi team worked hard to promote the new planners, and I was very happy as the new designs were revealed. A week before September 1st I organized myself to be available for the big sale. And yes, when I tried to pay for my order only 3 minutes had passed and I couldn't do it, then everything in my cart disappeared and finally everything was sold out. But why bother? The truth is that I was surprised by people's reaction, filling Hobonichi's accounts with negative comments, especially on Instagram. I think what affected me was the fact that people didn't have a little consideration and empathy. Obviously there were errors with the server but are they so angry and aggressive?... After thinking a little and letting the Hobonichi team solve the server problem, I was able to make my purchase 💖✨
I felt exactly the same. I love the company and their products to bits, my August morning routine started with checking out the daily countdown release, I had my lineup firmly planned, but at the end of the day - why panic and rage about something that isn´t a life-altering situation? Restocks are a certainty with Hobonichi, we still have 4 month until the new year, so orders can be placed later and after a couple of hours, everyone was able to purchase on the release day anyway. The levels of panic and anger were surreal to me... happy to hear you could make your purchase later on as well! :)
On another person's video, someone commented that there were scalper bots trying to buy up the hot items - and several were listed on eBay almost immediately, with jacked up prices. I don't know if this is true or not, but Shigesato Itoi posted a note about the issue, saying that although they had beefed up the online store's capacity by ~double what it was last year, this year the initial traffic to the site was "an order of magnitude" larger than they expected. To me, that supports the possibility that the issues were caused by bots trying to buy up the likely-to-be-hottest products.
My faith in the community is slowly being restored by this comment section and your video haha! You're so wholesome, and I feel like your analysis on the whole situation is just perfect, you worded it in the best way possible. 🐒
🐒My frustration lost steam as the night went on and I eventually just had a que sera sera moment. There would be restocks, in person shopping etc. I ended up ordering that same night just because I had procrastinated on laundry and was still awake 😂love the group and so happy to see y'all have a blast!!
🐵 I loved how you phrased planning as thinking about the future and journaling as thinking about the past. It's so true! I was in a group chat (they were doing a group order, I opted for my own) and we were cheering each other on the whole time! Very sweet moment out of the panic 😅
Honestly, as just a fountain pen guy, this stuff seems like a mini version of a black Friday event at a Best Buy, except without the violence. I am not into planning or journaling but I appreciate the effort that goes into the design of Hobonichi products and I can see why the community loves the products, this goes for Plotter and Travelers as well. I get so many free calendars every year through the mail that I tend to use them as I feel guilty if I just throw them out and I use them as my planners. Just happy that it seems like everyone who wanted Hobonichi items were able to get them eventually.
What a very thoughtful and mindful video. Thank you for shining a bit of light on our consumer driven world. What is amazing is this journal and planner community - every person is their own story, and as a community what an amazing library we have created.
When you said that it's difficult to participate in the journaling community without buying things, I think that's mostly true. But it's only true because of the hyper-consumption that's prevalent in the journaling community in the first place. It's a self-perpetuating cycle where the need to consume becomes both a cause and effect of participation. One can appreciate wonderful, well-crafted things without feeling compelled to own them. You might think, ‘Wow, that’s really nice; they did a great job on the covers this year,’ and then move on to use the things you already own. It’s that simple.
Love seeing all the planner/journal joy, and thanks for balancing it all with a little reflection around the hype and fomo that it can sometimes inspire.
I am a Hobonichi uber fan and I didn’t order things during the day Hobonichi went on sale simply because I wasn’t secure monetarily enough to buy Hobonichi and I planned to later. The panic seems a little strange to me because for anybody who’s purchased Hobonichi before, they will do a restock for just about everything at least once. The Yumi Kitagishi fiasco last year was really intense but Hobonichi restocked those covers a multitude of times and I am sure they prepared for the same demand for her covers this year. Unless people wanted the lottery covers that were for normal sale this year, there was no real reason to panic.
@@car5522 agree on everything including the secure monetarily 😜 - just wasn’t in the budget for me. I too am feeling like it is a little “twilight zone” for panic mode mentality I got a lottery cover last year - cousin size - and really wanted to try again for a weeks size this year - but… too expensive for me right now. They have second lotteries later in the “season” too so I may save for that chance
If you have unlimited money then I can totally see that ordering later with the restock would be no big deal. But for me I don’t want to place a big order today and then have to pay extra shipping later in October or whenever to just order one or two things. I want to make that free shipping threshold since now (since last year) all the products are more expensive because they don’t let you pay in yen. And this year they increased the free shipping threshold to $300 for US. On top of that last year I was one of the people that ordered my Yumi kitagishi in October along with my One Piece and it seems that they just did a preorder for those items because my package did not arrive in December 26. That really sucked because I did not have time to prep my pages before the year started.
@@SandandInk They are actually not having lotteries for covers this year - at least not the Mina Perhonen Piece covers. They are available to purchase directly on launch day.
@@arguchik aaah 😀 - good to know - the lottery got expensive for me last year because it didn’t count towards free shipping purchase - I did not even go online this year, did not want to tempt myself - too broke 😢 could not justify the expense - will wait to see everyone’s “haul” videos to find out what I missed 😜
I was so grateful for my new stationery group chat made of people I met at Stationery Fest! We really emotionally supported each other and it was fun to have a group of people who understood the hype and disappointment. At the same time, The Hobonichi Team is super passionate and I know they didn't want this to happen. My group chat remained positive and we even joke designed a sticker about "surviving" the 2025 launch. At the end of the day, creativity isn't limited by the items you purchase. 💜 Thanks for the video!
This is honestly such great insight. I got sucked into the hype too, but thankfully I took a look at what I had and just sat this year out. I don't think I'll ever stop wanting to buy new and exciting stationary stuff, but it has been good for me to take a moment before I buy.
I only purchased 2 Weeks and one A5 cover from Yoseka. I use the A5 for my journal. Two Weeks and one Travelers meet all my planning needs for home and work. One Weeks is a dedicated prayer/gratitude journal I’ve done this for three years now and it works great for my daily practice.
I am on the east coast, and tried to order the evening sales opened. While I was disappointed to have to wait, I was equally enamored with the fact so many others around the world were as excited about the same things I am. Everything I wanted was still available the next morning. In fact it was like a mini Christmas to order my own presents. My family and friends are so tired of hearing about pens, notebooks, and stickers 😂😂 So happy to watch your videos, it’s comforting and inspiring ❤ I also have enjoyed looking at the many retailers here in the USA to see what did sell out. Love seeing what other likeminded stationary nerds are interested in.
Loved this video Job! Beautiful thoughts. I am an older planner...meaning age! Just the fact that we have choice, and that the creativity this year is off the charts is incredible! I think with the world being as it is, perhaps our community is more intense this year. I love your practical thoughts and agree completely. There is something special about ordering from the original store. I am planning on this. Also planning on an A6 instead of a Weeks, as I want to use it for memory keeping and also a body of work I do that requires special pages during the month. The Weeks wasn't serving its purpose in this way. I love vertical planning, and am trying to decide what I will do, since I don't need daily pages as in the Cousin...Still figuring that out! I so love my Hobonichi planners and have been with them since 2022. I am forever grateful that I as a human being have choice. That's pretty cool.
🙈🙊🙉 Job!! Thank you for the reflection and words!! The monkey mascot has big ears because according to Hobonichi it’s more important to listen to others than to speak, or something like that, it’s very cute. And the “Only Is Not Lonely” is another old tag line of theirs, Keiko of Hobonichi explained in the Yoseka livestream that even tho you might be unique and completely different than everyone else else, you aren’t alone in this world, soooo cute 😭 Thank you for making this video. I was a bit disenchanted with the launch night but I’m glad I didn’t have a Karen moment, I want to speak to the Hobonichi manager… 😅 in the end I’m glad this situation has given us a pause to reflect. Unfortunately for me I’m still wanting everything 🤪 Anyways hope to see you at the Road Trip event!!
So happy I landed on your YT. I love Hobonichi. But I limited myself to what I needed -- a new 5 year. I definitely wanted a lot more, but I can wait until Christmas. In general I love all things Japanese stationary. Absolutely gorgeous. We're going to Japan next Fall and my only request is to visit as many stationary stores I possibly can.
Hi Job!! Thank you so much for the video. I recently found out about Hobonichi and experienced that server down on the launch day. I thought that was crazy and did feel let down. I wish I knew about this pop up before that craziness. I also turned to another American retailer. They sold everything at much higher price.. a rip off actually but I did buy them cuz a lot of covers I wanted appeared sold out during that server down time. Anyway, I will still visit this pop up!!
I love your outlook on this! I definitely had a list of covers/products to get, and when the website wouldn't work, I was frustrated, but then shifted to gratitude that I could find some of what I wanted at small shops like Yoseka and Paper Plant Co, to support them instead, even if it meant paying more. I also decided to ditch some of what I was getting (I was like, wait, do I really need this one??) and instead purchased a collab TSL cover from Baum-kuchen - something I had wanted forever and has more meaning and intention. Love the stationery community and how everyone is supportive across the board!
You picked up everything I was most interested in 😂 I ended up getting the yellow leather cover and the sushi weeks! Strongly considered the olive grove cover too cause it felt like matcha latte to me but I decided I didn't need 2 hehe loooove that zip cover now after seeing y'all look at it! If I were getting the hon, I absolutely would. Omg the jobonichi 🤣 Edit: I appreciate your discussion about mindfulness. I was on the reddit thread when everything was going down and it really did seem like the community collectively was losing its mind. It was nice to see when the dust has settled that there were a lot of thoughtful discussions about how we were probably out of line, and also similar sentiments about how it put things into perspective. As a community I also think we can all be a little hard on ourselves about overconsumption. I hope we can all try to relax and take things less seriously if possible, on both sides of the spectrum. We're going to be okay! 🙊
I really love how you bring a professional journalist vibe to the planner world. Into it! Also.... not you making me wish I still lived in LA for the stationary scene!!! 💌
Hi Job! I applaud you for sharing your thoughts about cultivating a healthy and mindful take on planners, journaling and consumerism in general. Like many people I was heart eyes all over the new hobonichi line up. So many I wanted to get! But not really needed to buy. Thank you for your refreshing honesty! 🩷 Much love from B.C. Canada! 🇨🇦
LOVED this video! I had actually decided this year to stick with sterling ink as I sat down and thought about my Hobo and how I rarely used it. I loved this years collection and almost purchased bc like you said FOMO but really stuck my ground!
I love how you phrased your final thoughts about your purchase habits. I did buy some Hobonichi, but from a third-party reseller, but in the same fashion as the official website it had problems, at the end, this gave me some time to rethink my whole shopping cart, and I'm quite happy with my picks because it was a more thoughtful process of really evaluating my decisions and my lineup for next year. 🐵
Good thoughts. Well said Job. TN user here and not all my inserts are strictly TN. Love MD white TN insert, love TRP 52 and 68gsm, going to go with a Sterling Ink insert next year added into the mix. I can understand and appreciate why Hobonichi is popular to a degree. The cost of many items and hype is real. I love the TN system though.
Hobonichi day 1 was definitely frustrating because - for example - the retailers just don't carry some items, including the Paddington line. A lot of the Paddington stuff was actually sold out in the first hour, and it wasn't until I happened to check later that evening (roughly three hours later?) I realised they were in stock again. Still took like 75 minutes after that to check out tho. 😅 (I was there for Paddington handkerchief for myself and my friend, haha; very much childhood nostalgia thing on top of function.) Def agree on the FOMO aspect in a lot of stationery releases tho! I've cut back on a lot of things like tape and stickers and ink because I wasn't using up what I already had, so I've had to consider whether owning the stuff was really worth the space they take up. lol had to go thru my stickers to find a monkey 🙈
I placed the order for the covers I really wanted with Jet Pens. I have always wanted to order from them but just haven’t had much I truly needed. I was happy to give them some business to ensure US retailers will continue to get stock. Once the issue cleared I ordered my books from Hobonichi the next morning to get all the bonus items. I was stressed then thought about it and figured if it isn’t meant to be I will use another great product out there. If that doesn’t work for me I will wait for the spring launch. I was pretty sure the books wouldn’t actually sell out. I will say the bots & resell market type of activity really frustrates me and I am sure companies everywhere wish that type of activity would stop. It seems to create chaos for all. Great video!
As always your videos bring me so much joy! I ordered the Weeks Unsodo: Bijutsukai through a US online stationery shop because I love the layout. This is my second year using Hobonichi and I wanted to stay true to my minimal planner journey. Thanks for sharing your journey! 🐵
Im from south america and theres only ONE store that sells hobonichis, and it doesnt even sell all the covers so with a fellow artist, at the begging of august we started talking about making a group order, she has been using a weeks for 3 years now (just like me) and she wanted to purchase planners for a friend and her mom, while i would purchase for my sister. We wanted the free shipping and so we started tracking the prices and making a buying list. But the 29 we made the final list and we were like- oh- we can kinda make the free shipping by our own XD. She wanted a traggen and a couple weeks and originals. While we were buying the STROLL that single handedly carried our order. So we ended up buying separately but i still thanked her for her disposition and time and i told her to send me photos when it arrives cause we love a good hobonichi unboxing in this household hehe
This is all very new to me. I just this year started journaling on my own and discovering the joy of fountain pens and then learning about this great community. I purchased what I wanted from Hobonichi via Yoseka Stationery. I was laughing at myself because I had learned how crazy it could be on release day and was worried. Especially when my WiFi was having issues since I wasn’t at home but at a family party. I had to go outside to complete my purchase but I did it. I felt bad for all of the people who had issues knowing how important it was to them.
Lovely and thoughtful video, Job 💕💕💕. My go-to hob is the cousin avec. Vanilla as anything. I buy in my country to support the local stationary shops. It is in my best interest to keep them viable. Hob gets their money one way or the other. I am a maker so I have the means to personalize anything I get to exactly what I want. The whole tie thing makes me want to thrift a tie and make a cover with it. I am fascinated by the business side of stationary and pens. The industry has created a whole entire economic engine out of basic paper and pen. Now we are willing to pay hundreds and thousands to have - well - pen and paper. Regarding the giveaway stuff … this makes me think of sporting events where there is a limited giveaway and people line up for it. Unless you really want to have that particular thing to love and or use, it’s just a thing. Well. Until someone ELSE is either impressed by it or wants to pay money for it. As you say - Job - it’s a hobby that is very accessible and customizable and supports art, goal setting and therapy. Every way is the right way to enjoy it. 💕💕💕
this is so important. it has been a little disheartening reading about so many people canceling their small stationery shop order after the hobonichi website came back up. of course I get it - I also bought from a small stationery shop when the hobonichi website glitched, and I paid more than I would’ve on the hobo website and it was frustrating. add to that when I finally placed my order with hobonichi the things I had purchased from the stationery shop were in stock on the hobo website and would’ve been cheaper and gotten me free shipping if I canceled the stationery shop order and ordered only with hobonichi. but it just seems in bad form to do that to these small stores. frankly, we’re lucky they’re in business. everyone expects businesses to be amazon these days and that’s just not the case.
I really like this journal community! Nice to see people I connect with on IG and so great you have a Hobo Store there ❤and see you connect with each other ❤ I sat at 4 am till 6 am and couldn’t make the purchase! And in community we all were kind of frustrated! But later the day it worked again. But we really panicked and saw how things sold out and we x time put stuff in the card and gots deleted! What a day 😂❤
I love what you're living, this is your dream life. Years ago you watched these launches from your computer in Canada. At least you inspire me to one day be there in person like you, experiencing the launch.
This year I did not stress about my ordering from Hononichi. I had already decided if what I wanted is sold out when I order (I still haven’t ordered yet) than either it wasn’t meant to be or wait for the reorder. Hobonichi always reorders many of their sold out items. I have so many covers already, I certainly do not NEED to buy another. I’m trying to make sure which planner/journal Im going with before ordering anything. Hobonichi, Traverlers Co, or Midori (I love B6 slim). Now that I’m retired, my needs for planning are definitely different.! 😁
So nice 👍 thank you for the down to earth review. Ya I refuse to buy in the hype. I just gave up and happily filled my cart the next day 😅 but I know how much Japanese companies care about their reputation and how hard they work. Love Hobonichi and travelers company! Will keep coming back 💕
Love your videos as always! If you are open to feedback- I wonder if you can change your camera settings to have some sort of motion stability? The vlogging shots are moving quite quickly and making me a little dizzy 😆🥴 not a big deal though and it’s so nice to see you out and about and your face ❤
🙈🙈 I’ve been buying from Hobonichi directly since 2020 (for 2021) & based from last year’s situation & this year’s popularity, I needed a backup plan. Me & my friends had a wishlist that hit the threshold amount but at the same time, if there are issues, we can always just buy locally which happened. Yes, it was frustrating but I still want to give Hobonichi the benefit of the doubt because my overall customer experience since using the brand was consistently great. It actually turned for the better because we ended with supporting a local retailer & hopefully next year, Hobonichi considers a preview party in Malaysia.
I think I have learned a lesson that I’ll just wait a week or so. That way, I can see more of how people use their covers, what fits and what cute combos people use. I may have spent a bit too much this year, and probably only need the planners next year. My planners have plenty of “outfits” to wear.
🐵 Hiya Job! You were wondering what kind of content to create. This felt like a message you felt COMPELLED to put out there. Like you just had to SAY something about it and now it's out in the world. Your voice shines so brightly, Job. I hope you can lean more into this because your thoughts and opinions are so so valuable, friend 💙
🫶🏾 love this! I was able to order as a group with my cousins and we were happy. Good luck to everyone getting what they wanted! 🐵 it had to said. Those ears lol 😂
I was one of the people who managed to get everything I wanted from the site about 12 hours after launch, and I was very relieved because I'd really had my heart set on a few items. While I was in limbo, I had a good think about some other brands or retailers, because I do want to support smaller businesses, but ultimately for me, it was worth waiting for Hobonichi to sort out their server issues because of how much I like their systems, and because I was placing a group order. Glad I waited, but it could definitely have gone the other way!
This was my first year purchasing from Hobonichi. I actually only wanted the Weekly calendar (the ‘companion notebook’, not the Weeks). Luckily, I happened to be in Portland that weekend so decided to check out Oblation and was able to make my purchase in person. The release last year already seemed so crazy to me! 😂🐵
This type of videos over the 2024 year made me rethink how I am using my planners and whether I should try new planners. I don’t like buying in September and not being able to use them for another 3 months, I’m not that patient 😂 For 2025 I’ll stick to my traveler’s company notebooks, will buy the 2025 products when they come out, and I have already bought my Happy Planners for the to dos, food logging.. This way I get the best of the two worlds. I can be creative in my notebok and quick and efficient in my happy planner. 🐵
Hi love your spreads and thoughts on journalling; a recent convert to Hobonichis and it's very hard to be restrained. May I know which photo printer / paper you used to print the pics for your journal? They look super sharp but also superthin. TIA.
I love Hobonichi and I told myself that I am sticking to only one planner for 2025. I will be trying out the Hobonichi Hon A6. I am also trying to be more mindful of what I buy… basically use all the things that I bought. Before buying my planner I went through my stationary cart and am selling/giving away so many things and I just thought wow this has been sitting here for years and I haven’t used this! Ugh!
I loved your video and your insights. 🐵As much as Social media is great bringing this community together it has created this hype and the feeling of FOMO especially when these brands are seen as collectors items. 🙈
This launch day stress is one of the many reasons I love systems that I can make myself, like Travelers notebooks (even though those string journal covers with insert systems existed looooong before Midori branded them). I can make my own covers and get exactly what I want, I can make my own inserts, and never have to worry about rushing to get something before it sells out or not being able to replenish parts later on. Job is there any way we can get a copy of the TC newsletter without making a purchase from the TC site? Or if we do make a purchase, are we guaranteed to get one? I got a glimpse of it during one of the (many) stationeryfest videos and your artwork in it of the TN is SO pretty, I want to use it as ephermera. :) (The banner on your website says "The store is now open!" but Etsy says your store has been closed since 2020.)
Honestly, I freaked out especially since I was watching all the countdowns etc and when 10PM EST came and I couldn't order, i became the crazy lunatic on Black Friday. I promptly placed orders on Yoseka, JetPens and Anderson Pens spending wayyyy more than I planned on. I finally went to bed feeling guilty. I literally woke up 6AM and went to the Hobonichi site and saw nothing on my list was actually sold out. I promptly reordered everything I wanted and thankfully was able to cancel my previously placed orders. This video made me realize the degree of my FOMO, yikes.
Haha the 🙈 IS freaky! I have to admit that I got caught up in the drama of launch day on Sept 1st for the first hour and had to step away for my own sanity. I ordered the next morning and it was a smooth experience. My learning is that next year, I’m just going to wait until the second day and get something from what’s available - it’s the format, not necessarily the cover that I need in the end… (I say that now 🤭) thanks for sharing your thoughts, friend!
I didn’t know about a Hobonichi pop up until I saw your video luckily I am in LA. And I’ll try to pass by after work. I’m surprise I think what you mention is true and we need to reflect on how we want to use our planner and I always have that mindset that I don’t need that many planners. My excuse is always it looks nice. But this 2024 I barely got the Hobonichi techno and I like it somewhat it works for me. I use to create my own but recently I lost interest. So I understand what you mean. I also don’t remember what I did the next day so I want to remember at least something.
I think that companies now are really banking on people having a mindset where something is rare, unique, will never be seen again, get it while it's gone! It reminded me of buying concert tickets for KPop, haha. It will always have a breaking point, I think, and I think a video like this was really great in reminding us to keep our perspective! I'm trying out a HON this year, but I was also really glad that the TN system kind of isn't as "rare" when it come to their yearly planners, like there's not as much of a rush to grab because it's basically the same every year. The yearly sticker sets are pretty get-able, too. (but of course their collab covers are a completely different story!)
@@cmakdeguzman - I thought the same thing about buying concert tickets 😜😵💫 but in this case I kinda thought it was the consumers driving the craze vs. hobonichi banking on a demand for “special”
I like the diary In jeans. I have a pencil ✏️ case that was made out of denim & look 👀 like a pear of jeans. 👖. I still use the pencil ✏️ case today but at home near my study 📚 desk. Hope you had a great day. ☕️☕️☕️
🐒.. I think you are right Job. I am one of those people, that likes to get things just because it's what's being used in the planning community and because I just want it at the moment. I have so many journals that I have bought from different companies that are waiting to be used and because everyone keeps talking about this Hobonichi Techo I'm ready to order one 😁. However, I stopped myself because I don't need it and I need to use the ones I have. 😁
I happily made my purchases - I only tried to buy at 11 am EST, my thoughts were that if my 2024 items were there it was meant to be. Similarly, my 2025 choices were available so it was meant to be. 🐵
This was the first year that I purchased on launch day. The only reason I wanted to buy directly from hobonichi is because I wanted to get the paddington cover. I checked the site 2 hours after launch and saw that everything I wanted was sold out and so were my backup choices. So I ordered everything I wanted from another seller, one that I bought from before and I trust, and went back to the hobonichi site for the paddington stuff after they fixed the site. I did give in to the fomo and got couple of additional covers I probably don't need. Not as bad as other people, but it definately got me thinking about my consuming habits and made me want to go over my previous covers and give away stuff I don't need.
🐵 Thanks for sharing what the LA pop up event looked like. I nearly got sucked into the FOMO too even though I had never used a Hobonichi before. The covers are cute and I was tempted to go down the rabbit hole. 🙈 However, I stopped myself and thought about what I would be spending and whether I would really use it. I’m going to do some research on this before committing to buying the product! 🌸
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! *I* am really, REALLY sad that I don't have the money to buy any Hobonichi products as we are trying to SELL our house! So I'm having to come to terms....that I may have MISSED my chance. I guess we'll see! 🐵
This was well said…I agree with you.. I am repurposing the cousins I have which might lead me into three years as I have two and purchased the 2024 HON from Amazon at a discount price.. but on a whole the fear of missing out is definately real… I did try to order from the website but like many people I was not able to but happy that I wasn’t as I downsized my options to the bare necessities.. I wanted the paddington pencil board but hoping someone will see it and maybe resell at some point. Instead I got the clear Hon cover and also the A5 techo cover in Candy Floss.. I will be getting the pen from someone who has no interest in the pen when their order arrives.. I pray that everyone has a great rest of the year and rely on Jesus and praise him in the good and difficult times in our lives..
Hi Job! Love the video! The only piece I wanted to add about the Hobonichi "apocalypse" is this: I 100% blame Hobonichi for building a site that does international sales all on one server. I feel like a name like Hobonichi (which, btw, was touting 10 million sales last year) really should have seen it coming...
The denim is cute! I’m not a hobonichi user but like to look at the covers. I hope they make more “simple” covers, like less pockets for a flatter writing surface. To fit my Midori MD 👀 I think it’s good to be more particular about what we bring into our lives. If it’s not the perfect color or print, we don’t have to buy it. I’ve kept agendas for years so having one is essential for organizing my days. Things like covers and accessories are bonuses but not needed. If there’s something I already have (like a notebook cover), I ought not to feel bad when I “miss out” on getting another one Having the hobonichi pop up is cool because people can try and feel the covers and papers! I’ve never felt a hobonichi cover before until I ordered mine. It’s not my favorite texture, or sound… but the Bouillon Sea of Clovers cover reminds me of my Jack Russel Terrier 🥹💕
I have to admit, the Hobonichi monkey weirds me out a little too 🙈, but I appreciate the meaning behind it - listen more, talk less 🙊. I really enjoyed watching you share your experience at the pop-up event. It almost makes me miss living in LA... almost 😜. I also appreciated hearing your reflections on the launch. I tried to place an order on launch night (PDT). I spent about two hours trying to get through and scrambling for a backup plan when the 5-year gift set sold out. It was my first time ordering directly from Hobonichi, as I usually stick to local retailers, but with starting a new 5-year for next year I had my heart set on the gift set. My heart sank when it sold out. My sweet husband even found the listing on Amazon Japan! In the end, I decided to call it a night and go to bed. When I woke up the next morning, I was able to order everything I wanted with no issues. This whole experience served as a gentle reminder to stay grounded in my ‘why’ and what’s truly important to me, and not get swept up in FOMO. I also recognize how frustrating it must have been for others who stayed up much later due to time zones or had to buy elsewhere at a higher cost. Their feelings are completely valid. Hopefully, we can all walk away from this with a bit more empathy and understanding, both for each other and Hobonichi. Thanks again for sharing! P.S. I’m hoping to make it out to Port Townsend in November 🤗
So glad I didn’t know they were actually selling at the pop up otherwise I would’ve bought more than I can afford or use. I love my a5 but honestly rarely use it. It’s the thought that I can plan & journal my days but never developed the habit. Consumerism is out of hand. My paper craft hobby is proof - I mainly make cards & treat boxes. I have enough stuff the last several lifetimes but still purchase new releases. Sigh.
I'm not a Hobonichi user, but I am studying journaling (I'm a prof) and I'm noticing a couple of things. One is that most Hobonichi users are under the age of 35 or even 30. Another is that I also see a growing distinction between journaling and planning, even though the techniques used are often the same. I find the hype about Hobonichi to be really interesting and so thanks for making a video about it.
I don't stitch, but thinking of that Pom Pom caramel cover, like the front and back add Pom Pom's beret and like a cozy for it have a bigger one when closed and or completed with. I liked your Doug cosplay, that bag just matched perfectly!! I don't follow hobonichi. Just have a cover cause Megan Riannon brought my attention toward specific cover of a year. But surrounding aura, energy of hobonichi is cute and fun making, keeping people in delight, so i like hobonichi for that. I started seperated in journaling cause so much discomfort ive been living with and letting to fester...... But suddenly, recently I feel better and light so I'm feeling the close tight-nit connection. Like not just smile awkwardly standing, but yeah continue. If better to move to friendship, mote closer that later = journaling for the better. 🐒 🐵 🐒
🐵 really thought-provoking questions for reflection! i think on the stationery fest interview with tamae from hobonichi she explained that the monkey’s ears are so big bc at hobonichi they think that listening is more important than speaking! that made the monkey cuter to me bc at first i was confused about its ears too😂
I didn’t know about the glitch I fell asleep so that’s why I still got all I wanted. I love stationery and my fountain pens I don’t care what anyone says. I did cut down on spending❤
I was so lucky because I like in UK by the time I woke up and went online it had been fixed!
So informative as always! I appreciate you! ❤
I too am feeling like it is a little “twilight zone” for panic mode mentality
I got a lottery cover last year - cousin size - and really wanted to try again for a weeks size this year - but… too expensive for me right now.
I had back up choices in case.. but this is great info.
I don't think I'll ever stop wanting to buy new and exciting stationary stuff, but it has been good for me to take a moment before I buy.
the store must've been so cool to visit! 🥰
This is a great video on the outlook of planner season. Stay blessed.
Love seeing what other likeminded stationary nerds are interested in.
haha I feel you about the friends and family tired of the pens and stationary talk. My poor bf and poor mom... 😂 😅
Job, you are such a treasure and such pleasure to listen to! ❤ Great words of reflection here. 🐵
Loved seeing the pop up store 😊 thank you for sharing
Thank you for making this vlog and saying what needed to be said. Thank you.
🙈🙊🙉 Job!! Thank you for the reflection and words!! The monkey mascot has big ears because according to Hobonichi it’s more important to listen to others than to speak, or something like that, it’s very cute. And the “Only Is Not Lonely” is another old tag line of theirs, Keiko of Hobonichi explained in the Yoseka livestream that even tho you might be unique and completely different than everyone else else, you aren’t alone in this world, soooo cute 😭
Thank you for making this video. I was a bit disenchanted with the launch night but I’m glad I didn’t have a Karen moment, I want to speak to the Hobonichi manager… 😅 in the end I’m glad this situation has given us a pause to reflect. Unfortunately for me I’m still wanting everything 🤪
Anyways hope to see you at the Road Trip event!!
Love your reflection at the end of the video ❤🐵
😊 thank you
You picked up everything I was most interested in 😂 I ended up getting the yellow leather cover and the sushi weeks! Strongly considered the olive grove cover too cause it felt like matcha latte to me but I decided I didn't need 2 hehe loooove that zip cover now after seeing y'all look at it! If I were getting the hon, I absolutely would.
Omg the jobonichi 🤣
Edit: I appreciate your discussion about mindfulness. 🙊
I loved the jeans cover too! I wish it were sized for the Cousin...
You can buy the 5 year denim cover snd use it for the cousin. It wouldn't be as snug, but you can do it
I really love how you bring a professional journalist vibe to the planner world. Into it! Also.... not you making me wish I still lived in LA for the stationary scene!!! 💌
I love your voice. It's calming.
I might get a Hon A6 for next year's diary.
Really thoughtful video. I enjoyed listening to your reflections.
😅 (I was there for Paddington handkerchief for myself and my friend, haha; very much childhood nostalgia thing on top of function.)
Def agree on the FOMO aspect in a lot of stationery releases tho! I've cut back on a lot of things like tape and stickers and ink because I wasn't using up what I already had, so I've had to consider whether owning the stuff was really worth the space they take up.
lol had to go thru my stickers to find a monkey 🙈
@@sootsed paddington items are adorable!
Great thoughts, Job. It’s so easy for us to be sucked into the fomo. Iv trying to be aware of the systems that actually work for me.
🐵This was so cute to watch. Thank you for showing us around, I wanted to go to the event, but I don't think I can make it this year.
🙈Great thoughts and good on your for staying strong hahaha
This is all very new to me. I just this year started journaling on my own and discovering the joy of fountain pens and then learning about this great community. I purchased what I wanted from Hobonichi via Yoseka Stationery. I was laughing at myself because I had learned how crazy it could be on release day and was worried. Especially when my WiFi was having issues since I wasn’t at home but at a family party. I had to go outside to complete my purchase but I did it. I felt bad for all of the people who had issues knowing how important it was to them.
Thank u for touching and featuring the LEATHER covers for the leather lover 🙋🏻♀️
Aww thank you Cristie! I hope one day you'll be able to visit the launch too!
I think your reflections and thoughts were spot on! 🐵 (Yes!! Agree on the ears)
Outfits!! Thanks for watching!
Thanks x Sharing ❤love hobonichi
🐒🙈🙊🙉 Lots of things to think about! I’ve been thinking about my own consumerism lately and how easily I’m easily influenced. But, I love it all!
🙉🙊🐵🐒🙈.. I loved your comment on FOMO and reevaluating what is really essential...
I’m lucky to live close to little craft place in Houston Texas. I got all my hobo stuff there in person. They do sell online as well. ❤
I don’t like buying in September and not being able to use them for another 3 months, I’m not that patient 😂
For 2025 I’ll stick to my traveler’s company notebooks, will buy the 2025 products when they come out, and I have already bought my Happy Planners for the to dos, food logging..
TIA.
🐒 enjoyed your video as usual
(The banner on your website says "The store is now open!" but Etsy says your store has been closed since 2020.)
🐵🐵🐵I’m the year of the monkey too! Love your honesty! TFS! Liann
🐵 ❤ Loved your video and perspective!
I was patient. This is my first year buying directly from hobonichi. My first one was a weeks in 2017.
Thanks for your video :)
Can I ask what printer you use for your photos in your TN @14:30 ? Thank you!
I moved over to jet pens and little craft place when I couldn’t get through the hobonichi site. It all worked out. 💪 😅❤
🐒 Thanks for sharing your calm thoughts!
🐵 Thanks for the video and chat Job ❤
🙈🙉🙊I ordered the Lemon water Mega to go in my gray croc Moterm cover to track my medical because it's easy to take to appointments.
Absolutely! They should have realized that sales would be tremendous.
Completely agree! Last year's process was so smooth and seamless, so I was really surprised by the wildness that was release day this year.
The denim is cute! I’m not a hobonichi user but like to look at the covers. I hope they make more “simple” covers, like less pockets for a flatter writing surface. To fit my Midori MD 👀
I think it’s good to be more particular about what we bring into our lives. If it’s not the perfect color or print, we don’t have to buy it. I’ve kept agendas for years so having one is essential for organizing my days. Things like covers and accessories are bonuses but not needed. If there’s something I already have (like a notebook cover), I ought not to feel bad when I “miss out” on getting another one
Having the hobonichi pop up is cool because people can try and feel the covers and papers! I’ve never felt a hobonichi cover before until I ordered mine. It’s not my favorite texture, or sound… but the Bouillon Sea of Clovers cover reminds me of my Jack Russel Terrier 🥹💕
What tn cover is that? I love the saying on the front!
9:18 yassssssss! 🙌🏽😝🙌🏽
Where is the best place to get that. I’m traveling and I’d love to see if I can pick something up and LA.
Sigh.
🐵🐵🐵 I'm here for the vibe ❤❤❤
I'm not a Hobonichi user, but I am studying journaling (I'm a prof) and I'm noticing a couple of things. One is that most Hobonichi users are under the age of 35 or even 30. Another is that I also see a growing distinction between journaling and planning, even though the techniques used are often the same. I find the hype about Hobonichi to be really interesting and so thanks for making a video about it.
🐵 🙈 🙉 thank-you so much for this video. Didn’t manage to place an order as the items were sold out. This shouldn’t be what journaling is about…
I don't stitch, but thinking of that Pom Pom caramel cover, like the front and back add Pom Pom's beret and like a cozy for it have a bigger one when closed and or completed with.
