It was a 'mandala' empire. Each region had their own ruler with allegiances to Sriwijaya rulers. It wasn't the centralized state Indonesia or Malaysia are now. More like a federation...something maybe Indonesia could learn from to be able to maintain its Pancasila principles...

Actually, there was no exact visible borderline between states in ancient Southeast Asia. The concept of nation state came from the western. Ancient SEA states had different political model similar to ancient India called “Mandala”, invisible circle of political influences expanding from center of the kingdom (capital city) over the territories under its control. The area of each kingdom depended on the power and strength of influences of the raja (king) so it can overlap with other kingdoms. So we cannot define an exact area of each states in ancient SEA.

    • @loomhigh
      @loomhigh 2 года назад +16

I suppose it could only be defined as a matter of "if a major problem arose, who would people turn to that will sort it out"

thank you for the elaboration. this makes so much sense for something like the Brunei Sultanate who had covered so much land in Borneo. i always thought this didnt make any sense considering the sultanate was pretty small and wondered how could it possibly exert control over countless literally head hunting, terrifying tribes all over the region, who absolutely did not adhere to the customs of a standard islamic sultanate. the mandala thing makes so much sense. if the sultans did try Western/middle east style of total land control, they wouldve had their heads chopped off long ago. its much more likely that they left the tribes alone in the deep jungles and just stuck to the territory near the shores.

Beautiful! This shows that the history of Indonesia is VERY complex. And the region's empires aren't just Srivijaya and Majapahit. Also, many thanks for the shoutout! It's an honor that I could contribute to the research for this video. :D
But really, people should know more about post-Hindu-Buddhist history of Indonesia. For example, we have Sultan Baabullah Datu Shah of Ternate (1570-1583), who succesfully freed his country from the Portuguese in 1570 and managed to drove them out of Maluku. He then expands Ternate's boundary to Mindanao, Celebes, Ceram, and Flores. Baabullah was also one of the first rulers in Indonesia who opened a diplomatic relation with the English. He personally met and welcomed the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake on his visit to Ternate in 1579, and seek to have good relations with the Kingdom of England.
People should also know about Sultan Alauddin of Gowa (1593-1639), the ruler of Makassar Empire (Gowa-Tallo) who brought his kingdom into a giant empire spanned from eastern Borneo all the way to the Aru Islands near New Guinea , right after Ternate collapsed and fell to the Spaniards in 1606. His grandson, Hasanuddin (1653-1670) was admired by the Europeans as a great ruler, and even dubbed by the Dutch as 'De Haantjes van Het Osten', the Rooster of the East, as he and his empire were considered as the Dutch East India Company's main rival in eastern Indonesia in the 1650s and 1660s. Their rivality reach its climax in the Great Makassar War (1660-1669), a brutal conflict which ended in a Dutch victory and the fall of Makassar.
In the far west, we have the powerful, Ottoman-backed Sultanate of Aceh. Under Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636), whose name literally means 'Young Alexander', Aceh became the strongest state in western Indonesia. At its peak in 1633, the sultanate ruled almost all of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, conquered its rival (Johor Sultanate), and raided Portuguese Malacca many times. Aceh was also one of the last state to be colonized by the Dutch. It was only conquered in 1903, after a long, bloody war since 1873. Even after that, the Acehnese were still launching guerilla warfares against the Dutch even until the Japanese came in 1942. Up til today, some Acehnese are still rejecting that their land was once a part of the Dutch East Indies.
There's also the Sultanate of Banjar from southern Borneo, possibly the most influential state in pre-colonial Borneo. It was one of, if not the only, Austronesian state in Indonesia that has succesfully TRICKED the Dutch. In 1787, the VOC helped Banjar to quell a rebellion. In turns, the VOC forced the ruler, Sunan Nata Alam (1762-1801), to give all his vassals in West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan to them. Back then, these regions are major pepper-producing lands, which was also the main commodity that brings a lot of wealth to the Banjar Sultanate. Sunan Nata Alam agreed and signed a treaty. Now, it seems like that all the profits goes to the Dutch. It's not. In 1797, after 10 years of the treaty, the Dutch gave back their Bornean colonies to the Banjarese. The Dutch gets very pissed off because they don't get any profit. Apparently, Sunan Nata Alam have secretly ordered his people to destroy all of their pepper plants. The Dutch ships that went to those lands for trade are also never get any profit, because they always attacked and raided by pirates, who were, unbeknown to the Dutch, Sunan Nata Alam's men. Once again, the Dutch gets very pissed of because they never get any profit. Just two years later, the VOC was disbanded. Later, Banjar also share a similar experience with Aceh. Banjar have a long war with the Dutch from 1859 until as late as 1906. Yep, it's also one of the last state in Indonesia to be colonized by the Dutch.
Now, I'd like to give some critics to your video. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with your choice of music, but it's not that much of a big deal. I also still noticed a few flaws in the video. Also, you should've colored the Malacca and Mataram sultanates, as well as the Bruneian Empire, since they're quite influential states too. But then again, you're not an Indonesian, and as I've said before, this region's history is really complex and mostly are still poorly documented. Once again, I'm glad that I could help you on the research for this video. :)

The only reason why south east asia has any independence is because vietnam battled the colonizers and won. And vietnam was weak because of poor management of cambodia because cambodia was a part of vietnam before the french came. And burma.became weak because of mismanagement of thailand because parts of thailand were belong to burma too. Both countries spent ita budget jn managing the country but came out poorer and divided because of it, leading to foreign powers easily taking control.

After the invasion by Rajendra Chola I the king of the Chola Empire from Koromandel, authority of Sailendra dynasty over the islands of Sumatera and the Malay Peninsula weakened. Some time later came a new dynasty that took over the role of Sailendra Dynasty, called by the name of Mauli dynasty.[2] The Dharmasraya can be considered as the successor of Srivijaya.
The oldest inscription bearing the name of Maharaja Mauli is the Grahi inscription dated 1183 discovered in Chaiya (Grahi) Malay Peninsula, Southern Thailand. The inscription bears the order of Maharaja Srimat Trailokyaraja Maulibhusana Warmadewa to the bhupati (regent) of Grahi named Mahasenapati Galanai to make a statue of Buddha weight 1 bhara 2 tula with the value of 10 gold tamlin. The artist name that responsible to create the statue is Mraten Sri Nano.
The second inscription from Mauli dynasty appear approximately a hundred years later in 1286. The inscription in which the name Dharmasraya and the name of king is Srimat Tribhuwanaraja Mauli Warmadewa appears dates from the 13th century,[3]: 201  namely the Padang Roco inscription discovered around the headwaters of Batanghari river (now Dharmasraya Regency in West Sumatera), dated 1286.

For example Medang and Islamic Mataram are two very important states in Indonesian history, and similarly Malacca to Malaysian history, and they aren't colored. Also Champa used to be a big player which although having small territory is really important in the region.

you forgot Salakanagara the first feudalism in java that serve feudatories politic for Pallava dinasty by Javanese ppl themselves, unlike Sri Vijaya that mostly Indian migrate there for trade.
Claudius Ptolemaeus (160 AD) wrote about Java in his book, Geographie Hypogenesis. He mentions the name of Argyre Chora (meaning: Silver Nation) in Labadio. According to the historian, Labadio means Dwipa-Javaka, Dwipa-Javaka, or Java Dwipa, which is the ancient name of Java Island. There was one kingdom that rule west coast Java in 160 AD, Salakanagara. Salakanagara means “Silver Nation”. It reinforces the theory that Ptolemaeus may have visited Java in 160 AD.
then Sri Vijaya exist later to serve the Chola dynasty, which was a totally different politic from the above mention, they are not pagan.

Las Islas Filipinas: Spanish name given to the Philippine Islands
Philippines: Was given by United States of America (USA) to honor the King of Spain, KING PHILIP II. Because that time, he's the ruler of Spain when the Philippines was discovered by his Spanish explorer. But doesn't mean that were still under the Spanish colony. Because that time when were named as the Philippines by USA, the primary reason is to unite the entire islands from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
About the countries who invaded or colonized our country, here's the following nations.
    SPAIN - 400 years
    USA - 50 years
Britain/United Kingdom - invaded the capital city Manila about 2 years and battling the Spanish and Filipino people.
Japan - Japanese empire occupied and invaded the Philippines for about 2 years. That time they're the most powerful invader in Asia Pacific Region.
On the PRESENT DAY, I see CHINA as the real threat in the region. THE RED GREEDY CHINA. THE LAND AND SEA GRABBER/NUMBER ONE HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSER COUNTRY/THE DIRTIEST AND POLLUTED COUNTRY IN ASIA.

The Mongols were one of the few ruptures of civilisations. Everything was going at a steady pace, then BAM! Mongols completely rearrange the face of the East.

The face of the East AND the West, actually. Arabia, Russia, and Eastern Europe were also profoundly affected by the Mongols.

@@SxVaNm345 Actually, it's no exaggeration to say that the Earth, itself, was affected by the Mongols. The Mongols killed so many people in their time (about 10% of the world population) that scientists actually measured a reduction in the global concentration of atmospheric carbon!
Not only that, but scientists have also discovered that about 1 in 200 men alive today descend directly from Genghis Khan. We know of no other named individual in all of human history who can claim so many descendants.
And of course, it was the Mongols who introduced GUNPOWDER to the West, changing the history of Europe and the world forever...
Fun fact: the Mongols succeeded where Napoleon and Hitler failed. They invaded Russia in the winter. And they WON.
Nobody trolls history better than the Mongols!
