Head cam by Malik Neille of the Concord Blue Devils Trumpet section at the Colts Training Facility. The clips are from both Prelims and Finals rehearsal run-throughs.
Malik (21) is from Orlando, Florida where he attends UCF for Animation. He started his drum corps career with the Oregon Crusaders in 2015. After that he was a member and soloist of the Bluecoats for 2016 and 2017. Malik will be returning to the Blue Devils in 2019 for his age out.

I just love how unique this ending to the show is. The past years the Devs have always ended their shows with *Insert vocal here* BLASTISSIMOOO!!!! but not this show. Malik's solo just puts the cherry on top of everything.

If you always have a mic attached, does it mean that Blue Devils 2018 is kind of doing what SCV did in 2017 with the supergroup (soloists adding texture and capping high notes on big hits), or does someone turn it off (you or another person)?
Also, you were probably completely deaf during your snare solo, which is amazing how you know that the right notes are coming out.

Someone has control over which mic is on for each part of the show. My mic is turned on in the closer only.
Also yes, at first the snare break was pretty painful and I pretty much couldn't hear myself whatsoever. I used a single earplug later on in the season so I could hear myself and the snares at the same time. Still pretty loud in there.
PS: The BD drummers are fun to be around.

Question for Malik: How was it transitioning from a Yamaha Trumpet (Bluecoats), to System Blue?

Cookie Cookies There’s no question that a Yamaha xeno sounds and plays better in every register (they’re pro horns), but we got brand new system blue horns this season with a lot of the same dimensions as a Yamaha xeno making them play with way more control and slotting than the old model. They were stuffy in the upper register but our lead trumpets overcame that pretty quickly. Again, they’re brand new so system blue is gonna make more tweaks and changes to make em play more efficiently. I personally thought they were pretty solid and the change wasn’t that intense aside from the upper register.
