I love how you slow everything down and really explain what you are doing. I’m new to free motion quilting so I’m watching all the videos I find. Love the amount of detail in your videos.
I just found your channel. I am new to quilting and just made my first quilt. I was only brave enough to do straight line quilting but looking at some of this makes me want to try these techniques. You are an awesome teacher. I love your style of teaching. Thank you.
You are so great! You're taking the fear out of free motion. So far I'm just a wild woman with stitching all over the place & unintended peaks...This info on using rulers is very helpful. Thank You!
Thank you for this video ❤️ I bought a ruler foot and a few rulers about a year ago but I have been too scared to try them. I will definitely pull out some fat quarters to practice!
I am having a problem with the fabric and the ruler NOT moving and it just bunches up, could this be that I have the wrong foot? I am using a brother machine and I love the way you take your time explaining everything, because I am really frustrated
Make sure you have dropped your feed dogs and are using quilting gloves. That always helps me move easily. You may also have to raise the ruler foot up slightly on the shank. It may be too low and trapping the quilt sandwich. If it is none of those things, check your tension. Sometimes you can end up with a thread nest below and the fabric gets stuck.
I want to learn the ruler work but I don’t ever see any work done on a pieced quilt it’s easy using a small piece but I tried doing it on a lap quilt it was a mess Holding the template and holding the quilt and trying to keep nice even stitches is very can you show doing the work on a real qui,lt❤
Thank you for your demonstration. I was wondering if you could use the quilt ruler and ruler foot without lowering the feed dogs. As you may guess I haven't done too much quilting so please forgive my ignorance. I love the idea of creating patterns on fabric and love the structure of the rulers!
Reduce the stitch length to -0- then I took a index card and cut it in half length wise, placed to over the feed dog area & secured it down with painters tape. run your machine for a few stitches with out thread to open a hole in the card. Having the stitch length to 0 the feed dogs don't move.
@@kaymw34 thank you - I have discovered my feed dogs do not lower and while I do have a plastic cover for the feed dogs, it makes the sewing surface a bit too uneven to achieve good results . So I will use your suggestion using the card and tape, as it sounds like it will work much better.
I have a brother 1500, I bought the high shank it needed only to see the needle wasn't centered, I found out this machine needed the high shank special. Something to keep in mine if your needle isn't centered.
I think it depends more on how precise you like to be. If you like the look of perfect lines and curves, then rulers will be your best friend. If you are ok with some imperfections while you develop muscle memory for free motion quilting designs, the stencils are for you.
My machine the feed dogs doesn’t Lower I have to put a plastic cover over the feed dogs. Is this going to work for me? That little plate is a raised a little. Or could I do something on stitch length for the feed dogs ? Thanks for your help. Great video

When you are doing Ruler Work.... how do you quilt it that works out evenly from start to end of Border ? Ex... watching you do the triangles....if you start at top and work down...I do not want to end w a half triangle. Thank you for your help
Thank you. Do you start in the middle of the - say, border and then work to corners each way? Or d.o you start at one end and adjust as you go to opp end?
That is going to vary by person. Ideally you want your elbows to be at a 90 degree angle when your upper arms are at your side. So usually it is best to have a cabinet your sewing machine can sit in.

Great tutorial! Do you happen to know if the Eversewn machines take a low shank ruler foot? Any suggestions on how to figure this out (I purchased my Eversewn 25 online). Thanks 😊
When I tried to do this my machine did not make stitches. I can free motion without the rulers. I do have the ruler foot that is compatible with my machine. What would be the reason I don't get stitches?
Where can I find that pen. I am in Canada and the pens I have are not very good, they seem to dry out quickly and I have to mark many times to see the mark.
Pfaff is usually a medium, but check with the place you bought it from. They will know for sure. If you measure the distance from the screw to the bottom of the foot you can determine shank. High shank is approximately 1 1/4 inches from the screw to the bottom of the foot. Low shank is approximately 3/4 inches from the screw to the bottom of the foot.
When you are quilting on your home sewing machine you want to work without having to turn the quilt. If you used a walking foot, you would constantly be turning the quilt under your machine and that would be very cumbersome and near impossible on a large quilt. A ruler foot and ruler let you go in any direction without turning the quilt, you just move it side to side or back and forth in whatever direction you want to stitch next.

Love the tutorials! It really is difficult with rulers on a big quilt on a domestic machine. Thanks for the tip on Angela's rulers!
Glad you like the tutorials! The smaller size makes it great for the domestic or the longarm.

If you are just quilting straight lines on your quilt can you keep the feed dogs up?
Thanks enjoyed I am very interested in machine quilting.

I see some stitches being sort of pulled up, how can you prevent this please? Thank you so much.

If the frixion pen marks come back due to cold, I just throw the quilt in the dryer and the heat from the dryer erases the marks

Just reduce your stitch length to 0 and it will do the same thing as lowering your feed dogs.

If you click on the product link the images on the feet list the machines they are compatible with.
What brand is that yellow marking tool?
shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com/product-tag/frixion/
The marker sounds like a angry insect. My cat went nuts when she heard it, and trashed my computer table trying to find it. :-)
Why does that table not fit properly on your machine. I was thinking on buying a BabyLock but that threw me off a tad. Thank you.

It is probably positioned too low on the shank. Try moving it up a bit and it should move just fine.
Frixon gel ink will return after washing. I have personal experience.
I have never had a problem. And they should go away with the heat of the dryer

There is a link to the pens in the description, and we do ship to Canada! :)

Cant tell what the ruler looks like from the web site. No clue at all. Had to do a search on it.

What is the chalk marker you used & do you carry it?
That is a medium shank foot mine is a low shank for a singer professional machine.
Actually it is a low shank foot.
@@QuiltAddictsAnonymous Its hard to even see it, I wanted a metal one, I don't think it would work if its 3/4 .
How do I know if my shank is high medium or low? I have a Singer quantum stylist 9960.
Check your manual, but most Singers are low shank

What is the best stitch length to use
You control the stitch length, so you won’t be setting it to anything. But it should look like 2.5 mm stitch setting.
Stupid question. Why wouldn't you use your walking foot with the feed dogs up along with the straight ruler?
When you are quilting on your home sewing machine you want to work without having to turn the quilt. If you used a walking foot, you would constantly be turning the quilt under your machine and that would be very cumbersome and near impossible on a large quilt. A ruler foot and ruler let you go in any direction without turning the quilt, you just move it side to side or back and forth in whatever direction you want to stitch next.
what is the threat wrapped around the needle before it's threaded
Some have high shank special
What about a ruler foot for the vintage Singer slant shank machines?
I have only seen them for low, medium and high shank machines. That is all we are able to order from our distributor.
I have brother sewing machine
Is there a reason to wear gloves?
Watch the video again. It helps you control the fabric and rulers.
Can you use the rulers without lowering your presser foot
No, your tension would be really screwed up and you need a presser foot to hold against the ruler.
