- Duncan Pittaway made history today by firing up one of the largest-engined 4 cylinder cars ever built which was constructed by Fiat for a Land Speed Record attempt in 1911.This is the first time anyone has heard or seen this monster in action in over 100 years ! The heroic project has been a challenge of monumental proportions and the success is a huge credit to Duncan and his team who have triumphed over a multitude of difficulties during the last twelve years.
The stories of the original LSR attempts over 100 years ago are legendary and reported elsewhere but here is a brief specification of the car:
28.4 litres, 4 cylinder Land Speed Record car. 1911. 290 b.h.p. at 1,100 rpm.
Torque 1,384 lbs/ft . 1,876 Nm.
Bore: 190 mm. Stroke: 250 mm. 28,353 cc (1,730 cu ins).
Wheelbase 2.75 m. (9ft 1/4"). Weight 1,900 kg.
Double chain drive.
2 cars produced
The engine has no starter motor, thus each 7.1 litre (432 cu in) cylinder has to be hand-aspirated with fuel mixture and then detonated on the correct piston, after it has begun its downward stroke, by a small battery-operated trembler coil which produces a shower of high voltage sparks. The man on the crank handle needs to stand well clear at that point !
Turn the sound up for added thunder !
.
I love how after he cranked it the engine stood silent for a moment before kicking the whole car one side to another spitting flames
the fact that he just started that monster on the hand crank... absolutely mental!
Jeremy Clarkson would be giving double thumbs-up and screaming "POWEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!!"
then james may would put him to sleep talking about the torque
SgtPnkks
and hammond would be cussing because its a Fiat,
however nice restoration!
+Xantec we build cars when your granfather paint his face in blue.barbarian.
Car's a beauty, but it's only producing 10hp/L roughly. Not that much power.
or he had something to mock about against italian cars
Absolutely fantastic! Major congrats to Mr. Pittaway! He's done a wonderful job getting this beast running again! :D
Number 4 cylinder appears to be running a little rich !
I don't want to drive it, I just want to touch it. What a machine! Beautiful! OK, I want to drive it now.
A work of the finest italian art.
That's Just Absolutely Brilliant!!!
"The man on the crank handle needs to stand well clear at that point ! " LOL, THAT WAS A GOOOD DESCRIPTION !!! ! !!! :-))
Thank you :-)
A genuine. 4 cylinder muscle car
La mamma di tutte le muscle Cars !!! The moather of all muscle cars !
He's a better man than I to be able to turn over 28 Litres by hand!, it must have pistons like beer barrels!
Not sure which I love more, that it shakes on start up like a wet dog, or that about the same time, the exhaust ports become the Gates of Hell.
Considering I'm nearly scared watching a video of this, I imagine actually being next to this car is pretty terrifying, not even mentioning actually sitting in the passenger seat or driving it.
Think how big the pistons in this must be. A motor six times the size of a Ford 302 but on half the cylinders. Great noise.
At least the size of a large Folgers can!
427 ci per cylinder
7.1 liters
Each cilinder is a big ass cadillac V8. Or 3.5 audi A4 engines
Looks like fuel mixture must be rich to belch out fire.
Seen this beast at the NEC better in the flesh would of loved to hear her live great work guys
You know, it's just a gut feeling, but I think it *might* be running a little bit rich.
Thats because it is 2 stroke😂
Ear defenders? What are those?
Lamborghini Aventador=modern Flamethrower
Fiat S76=Original Flamethrower
AMENNN !!! ! !!! :-))
“IS IT ON? I CAN BARELY HEAR A THING.”
“IT’S WHISPER QUIET.”
Wow top speed of this is 290km/h!
plus chain driven. that's a scary ride right there.
top speed was 213 km/h which is still very fast fir 1911
Stupendo, le fiamme in uscita ,bella musica !
Don't judge a car by its cylindrrs
Talk about a smooth ride.
What a beast!
Those engine flames should be enough for baking a pizza.
none of those dudes are wearing any hearing protection!
That monstrosity must be screaming without exhaust pipe or muffler.
theyre all old and probably halfway deaf at this point, especially if they work around performance vehicles
1,708 cubic inches!
I love it!
I have so much respect for the guy who went 290km/h with this thing...balls of steel award 1913.
watch?v=jZtkw-hJODg
TheCassiusTain 290?
135mph was the record.
Thats still very fast though
@@deadalive7311 thats about 240 kmh right?
193 mph is 200 kmh so it must be either 230 or 240. Still, i would need a new pair of pants if i even passed 80 mph in this beast
This beast was driven on Britush motorways by Mr. Pittaway.
they are quoting 300 hp OHC ,multi ,valve per cylinder, displacement all trick racing stuff in 1911 ,cant waite to see the full movie.
I think i found mobile nuclear power plant from the past... Or really small mean dragon trapped under beautiful red hood. Just look at those flames!
Impressive!
now I know, size DOES matter.......
Not really. It produces only 10 BHP from 1 litre.
BUT THE TORQUE IS AMAZING !!! ! !!! :-D
I wish I could drive it with no earplugs in. Terrorize my town at night! Wake everyone up, lol. I'm sorry officer it's bone stock! Lol.
tailspin earplugs...really ? You probably wear gloves when wrenching, don't ya ?
Holy christ look how hard it bucks when it starts up. If you crank that thing and don't let go in time it's going to tear your arm off and throw it into a different time zone.
Imagine hearing this behind you while driving that would be scary.
4 cylinder, 28.5L, 300hp @1400rpm with 2000lb of torque
bros spittin nothing but straight facts 🗣🔥
impressive tractor
All you people knocking 4 bangers....here you go! xD
Space Woona the thing is...that ain't your mom's civic motor. That thing probably more totque at idle then a detroit big block.
so... can i put it in a honda?
Little known fact, this is the car that led to the invention of mufflers.
In F&F, there was the line: Your engine isn't even the size of your mouth!
Well, I guess, this one beats the rat block V8, by far.
"monstre du toin"!!! incredible nice car ever
This thing scare me.
D:
Imagine you are driving this thing! On 1911 roads!!
Dat torque tho.
7.1 lts per cylinder, wow.
Bro they Needa put some headers on this thing💀💀
Search for "Fiat S76 - Beast of Turin" the audio is much better on that video. This audio seems a bit neutered, doesn't sound as vicious.

almost 1,400 foot-pounds of torque...through a chain.
aaah l'Italia....
How many gallons to the mile ;P?
Try nearly 9 gallons of gas per revolution of the engine. So pretty much 0 mpg.
$76. ? Well, In 1913 4 US cents was worth $1. US 2024 dollar.
Holy fucking shit!
best Anti-lag
Imagine this in a Fiat 500.
You’ll notice that it has two seats, one is for the driver, and the other is for the original Fix it again Tony.
I wanna see this Fiat do a video in Jay Leno's Garage.
I wanna see this car burn Leno's garage. Say, let it idle for a few hours with the garage doors closed. Or PLEASE, have him turn the crank, and while he's bent over, shove a torque wrench all the way up his arse!
Dimi K did Leno piss in your Cheerios? Did he harm you/family/friends in some way? Or are you just mad he is successful and has what you don't?
Not really. He's just a little too full of himself, and I think his humor is lame. I have a couple of classic cars, and that's enough for me. BTW, don't eat cheerios! They're not real food/good for you. Try to feed them to birds. They don't like it, (and they usually eat anything)!
So many flatcaps
Das ist dann wirklich mal ein Verbrenner, der zur Erderwärmung beiträgt. 😂
THATS A FIAT?!?!
Them Fiats aren't as big as they used to be, nowadays 😂
It only has a 4-cylinder.
I wanna smell the exhaust fumes and gas LOL
I wanna light a sausage on fire with that beast.
Nemá chybu!
It has 300 horse
........and, as a classic Historic vehicle it is ULEZ exempt! 👍👍😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
eat this prius drivers and tree huggers :D
Total death trap. Small wheels (with basically bicycle spokes no less), chain driven with a MASSIVE power output, on top of the exhaust spitting right in your face, and that thing is awkward as hell. ....but damn is it cool!!
Better get AAA
soo like 120 hp?
290
Variath Yea, but guess what. Horsepower is torque times RPM/5555, so if you do the math (which I did), this thing revs to only 1,100 RPM. That means that it makes about 1,515 foot pounds of torque. That's more than a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse.
*****
when you look at the displacement though... yeah... you can expect to get a metric fuckton of torque
Variath If i understand correcrly it set record just above 200km/h. Shouldn't it do more with that much power..?
eternyman Damn impressive for 1911 thou.
O G2 Carros (G2C) agradece!
so this is what everyone on facebook is sharing... big deal lol
Take a look at original exhaust system.
ruclips.net/video/jZtkw-hJODg/видео.html
That's an amazing exhaust system, so quiet I couldn't even hear it! Cool footage though.
She sounds a little lean. She is definitely backfiring on a cylinder. Timing sounds a bit slow.
It's not made to idle.
jeepinator It's made to scream.
jeepinator
That's true, but if you watch the exhaust, you can see the #3 cylinder is popping a lot more than the rest of them, and it's backfiring out of it, with a lot less of a flame.
