That era is over. There are now more GMO crops grown in other countries than there are in the USA.
GMO is just a breeding method. All breeding methods engineer better crops by various methods but none are as fast and accurate as GMO science and the new CRISPR gene editing. It s a common lie found on the internet that the EU banned GMOs but that is false. They import thousands of tons of US GMO grains each year. SOME EU countries ban growing them but not consuming them - the EU safety commission says all GMOs are safe. China, India, S America and Russia all eliminated their GMO bans completely. You are ignorant. Those countries now make their own GMO seed for their needs, mostly government projects that give the seed away free. Stop lying.
*GMO 20-year safety endorsement: 280 science institutions, more than 3,000 studies*
"Currently, there is a social and political controversy about the safety of foods produced from genetically modified (GM) crops. However, in the scientific community, there is no dispute or controversy regarding the safety of these crops. To date, more than 3,000 scientific studies [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] have assessed the safety of these crops in terms of human health and environmental impact. These studies together with several reviews performed on a case-by-case from regulatory agencies around the world have enabled a solid and clear scientific consensus: GM crops have no more risk than those that have been developed by conventional breeding techniques.

In addition, there is also extensive literature that compiles the socioeconomic and environmental benefits that transgenic crops have reported in two decades of commercialization [9,10].
This document brings together the public statements of technical and scientific institutions that adhere to this consensus. I made an update based on this document from ChileBio that initially included 40 official documents representing about 190 institutions - the document from ChileBio was subsequently updated in 2017 with the institutions and statements attached here.
The update shows that 284 technical and scientific institutions recognize the safety of GM crops and their potential benefits. Interestingly a large part of these institutions are located in Europe, the continent that has put more obstacles to the commercialization of these crops. On the other hand, the countries with most organizations in favor of GM crops are United Kingdom (33), United States (25), Italy (23), Spain (16) and Germany (11).
In conclusion, 284 technical and scientific institutions recognize that GM crops are not riskier than those produced by conventional breeding, and/or the potential benefits of these crops."

We could not feed the world as we do if it weren't genetic manipulation of organisms. GMO techniques are vital to meeting demands for food the world over. Furthermore, genetic manipulation of crops have made it possible to introduce into native foods the nutrients that may be missing in a traditional diet causing malnutrition and all that stems from that. For example, the introduction of the beta-carotene gene into rice in the Orient where vitamin A deficiency was common completely and promptly solved that problem seeing that the body converts beta-carotene into Vitamin A.

People Strongly Against GMOs Had Shakier Understanding Of Food Science, Study Finds Jan 26, 2019 "People who most intensely oppose genetically modified food think they know a lot about food science, but they actually know the least, according to a peer-reviewed paper published in January in the journal Nature Human Behaviour.
GMOs are widely considered safe by scientists, but opponents have said they want more science on the potential harm so that subjective arguments aren't part of the equation. However, previous surveys have shown that providing more scientific facts about GMOs to people doesn't change their minds.
The survey, conducted by four universities, asked 2,000 people in Europe and the United States how much they knew about genetically modified food, what their opinion was and how intense it was." *60,000 food products with Non-GMO Project label may be “false or misleading,” FDA guidance document says* "The Non-GMO label may see its ubiquitous butterfly wings trimmed, according to a new guidance document from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) aimed at promoting accurate food marketing practices. In late March 2019, the agency released a set of recommended guidelines detailing how non-GMO and GMO-derived products should be labeled in order to comply with federal law.
The update only “represents the current thinking” of the FDA on the issue and compliance with the new guidance is voluntary. But the agency identified specific kinds of information commonly found on non-GMO labels as “false or misleading,” suggesting the FDA wants food companies to rethink their marketing strategies. The clarification also may open the door to legal challenges of companies using non-GMO labels that can be seen as deceiving to consumers.
Varieties of everything from beer to breakfast cereal are marketed as non-GMO in grocery stores across the US. That includes thousands of foods that do not have a GMO version on the market, including salt, raisins and tomatoes. For the most part, those who embrace non-GMO labeling, many of them committed organic food advocates, share the same fundamental animosity toward so-called genetically engineered foods. Some, like the organic industry group Just Label It, also argue that the labels promote “transparency in our food system.” Many farmers and scientists argue just the opposite, saying that such labels promote confusion and the misleading belief that non-GMO products are safer or more nutritious than their genetically engineered counterparts.
Last fall, the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, an organization that has been rated by the University of Pennsylvania as the top science and technology think tank in the US, submitted a citizen’s petition to the FDA challenging the use of the Non-GMO Project’s logo, saying that it “deliberately deceives and misleads consumers in violation of the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.”
“They are exactly the sort of deceptive and misleading labels Congress was intent on prohibiting,” Val Giddings, a geneticist and senior fellow at the ITIF, told the GLP by email. ITIF petitioned the FDA “….to issue a regulation prohibiting the use of the term ‘Non-GMO’ on consumer foods and goods and requiring distributors to omit any ‘Non-GMO’ term or claims on their labeling.” Many products brandish various non-GMO labels, including eggs, green beans and walnuts (among many more examples), which don’t have genetically engineered equivalents on the market. Some of them, like the FDA’s example of salt, don’t contain any DNA whatsoever. Advertising a product that contains no DNA as “non-GMO” is misleading. Henry Miller, the founding director of the FDA’s Office of Biotechnology, has argued that these labels prompt “nearly half of consumers [to] avoid GMO-labeled foods.” He called on the FDA to go further and stop food companies from marketing products as non-GMO when there are no GMO equivalents available to the public." geneticliteracyproject.org/2019/04/11/30000-food-products-with-non-gmo-project-label-may-be-false-or-misleading-fda-guidance-document-says/
Edit note: since this letter was released the number of misleading labels has doubled. It originally said 30K, I changed it to 60K based on current data.

Margaret I agree with what you wrote, but I think I probably disagree with you if we go a little further. Every single time I see a demand, in a law or in a proposal, for labeling of GMO/bioengineered food, it always wants to tell the consumer only whether SOMETHING in the food is bioengineered. It never wants you to know WHAT is bioengineered. If you are a consumer who has taken the trouble to educate yourself, you would know that there is no feature that is common to all bioengineered foods. If you have decided that you want, for example, to avoid GMO foods that are from herbicide tolerant plants, the bioengineered label may be steering you, instead, away from a food with an added vitamin, or a food that uses less of a pesticide, or a food that was protected from a plant disease.
And all those non-GMO Project labels you see in products in the stores are just as bad in the other direction. They label as GMO-free a whole bunch of foods that couldn't possibly be GMO. What good is the GMO-free icon on a bottle of olive oil, when all olive oil is GMO free? What good is the GMO-free icon on a head of lettuce when all lettuce is GMO free? And almost as bad is that they have decided that some foods are GMO which you would never consider to be GMO. For example, I don't know if you consider a food to be GMO when it's meat or milk from an animal that was fed with a GMO grain. I don't know if you consider a food to be GMO when all the novel protein or DNA has been removed by processing, like sugar or vegetable oil.
I have talked to lawmakers who wanted to write labeling laws, and asked them to identify the ingredient that is bioengineered. They all give some deceptive reason why they don't want to do that.

That is an idiotic hateful LIE from a hypocrite who wants us to think he is religious. You are just a hater. FDA launches “Feed Your Mind” website to educate about GE foods
"On March 4, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched its “Feed Your Mind” website, which is the first public-facing product from the $7.5 million that Congress appropriated starting in 2017 for an agricultural biotechnology education and outreach initiative. According to the FDA, the initiative’s goal is to “share science-based information that educates, informs and broadens understanding about agricultural biotechnology for consumers.” Congress (and the special interests that lobbied for the appropriation) clearly intended to use the authoritative voice of the FDA to increase consumer understanding of agricultural biotechnology and correct misconceptions and misinformation.
The initiative’s website includes fact sheets, infographics and videos. It will be followed later this year and in 2021 by additional materials for middle school classrooms, resources for health professionals and consumer materials.
In reviewing “Feed Your Mind,” one finds information that is scientifically accurate (with reliable references) and relatively easy for a non-scientist to understand. If you know nothing about GMOs and read the website’s contents, you will clearly be better informed about what GMOs are, although not necessarily about why GMOs have been so controversial. The question that remains is how this website (which is not easy to find from the FDA’s homepage, nor does it quickly appear when entering basic questions about GMOs into an internet search engine) will educate a significant segment of American consumers.
Will the FDA promote the website and its materials through an ad campaign? Will they send emails or postcards to Americans telling them to visit the website? I cannot imagine that the average American consumer visits FDA’s website with any great frequency. One can reasonably assume that the number of consumers who will search for the “Feed Your Mind” website, even if they know it exists, will be extremely small. So far, the FDA has only announced the website to its list of stakeholders. Much more outreach will be needed if the information they have generated is to have the impact Congress intended." No it definitely is NOT or you would equally demand to see labels for other breeding methods such as seed selection, hybridization or grafting. But you don't because you are a science illiterate conspiratard manipulated by RUclips clickbait videos and the organic industry propaganda campaign. GMO is not an ingredient. There is no difference in the food, only the efficiency of growing that crop for our hard working farmers. Organic methods are unsustainable and conventional farming uses far more toxic pesticides and fuel and water.

Stickers on fruit and vegetables DO identify Organic foods. Look for the numeric code on those stickers. The ones with FIVE NUMBERS BEGINNING WITH "9" ARE ORGANIC. This was a requirement pushed by the European Union years ago.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 11 месяцев назад +1

@@MG.50 This video and the foods shown in the thumbnail are USA sourced. The laws are about USA labeling. Brits have been making fools of themselves by caving to the minority organic propagandists, putting them into a silly conundrum. Organic farming is too inefficient for the EU to achieve its planned sustainability goals. EU labeling laws are different and not valid in comparison here.
There are hundreds of ignorant amateur RUclips videos claiming to be informing consumers when in fact they are misleading you about PLU codes. Most of these channel owners could care less, they just re-post someone else's garbage for click bait revenue.
"The PLU coding system is voluntary, not mandated by any governing body. There are currently over 1400 PLU codes issued for fresh produce and produce related items. Use of PLU Codes is with the understanding that IFPS accepts no liability whatsoever for any direct, indirect, special or other consequential damages of whatever kind resulting from whatever cause through the use of the PLU Codes or any information therein, even if IFPS has been advised of the possibility of such damages."
      www . ifpsglobal . com/PLU-Codes
There was a change in the codes a few years ago and RUclips videos randomly ignore the changes or still have the old numbers presented as fact today. "Numbering conventions - Red tomatoes with PLU code in a supermarket. Non-organic produce is randomly assigned four-digit PLU codes in the 3000 and 4000 series.[1] Organic produce may be designated by prefixing the four-digit, non-organic PLU with a "9". For example, non-organic bananas are 4011, while organic bananas are 94011. In the future, the 83000 and 84000 series will be used; however, unlike the "9" prefix, the leading "8" will not denote a general category. (At one time, numbers prefixed with "8" were reserved for GMO products, but they were opened for general use after GMO growers didn't use them.)[4]" Wikipedia
There is nothing stopping any grocer from using the typical organic codes on all their produce if they think you will buy more.

For a long while I wasted my time reading labels trying to find any boxed food that was free of Corn Syrup, Canola Oil, or Soy because of those three were GMO. I figured if I could avoid the three big GMO ingredients than I would also not be eating so much of the other other ingrediets that I can't even pronounce. One day it just clicked in my head, an understanding that almost all the boxed, canned, and jarred foods are ruined with these added poisons. I don't waste time reading the labels much any more because there is no point in even going down the aisle they are in. Like you said, we have to make everything ourselves.

Anyone curious on this subject should research Vandana Shiva and her books and lectures.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon Год назад

I did the real unbiased factual research for you. Nobody wants to sell Shiva's books. They were banned from Amazon because they are just lies. *About the anti-biotech activist Vandana Shiva:* Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety.

"Shiva is scheduled to speak in late January at Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Cruz on “equitable and sustainable” farming methods. Her positions on a variety of issues have irked and at times outraged scientists who consider her a disseminator of misinformation who profits at the rate of $40,000 a lecture (or more) to spread propaganda critical of mainstream views of biotechnology. Raised in prosperity, this Indian Brahmin was formally trained as a philosopher, embracing and promoting a form of Quantum Theory that is now widely dismissed. She often falsely claims that she is a trained physicist, and those false ‘scientific’ credentials are often echoed by her supporters. The GLP has carried numerous articles about her history of misstatements and fabrications (here, here, here). She was the subject of a scathing critique, “Seeds of Doubt,” by Michael Specter of The New Yorker, which documented her history of misleading claims and what Specter maintained often verged on anti-science gibberish.
For more than three decades, she has relentlessly campaigned against globalization, focusing on food and agriculture socio-economic issues and an opposition to GMOs, free trade and intellectual property rights. She alternately promotes land redistribution, indigenous and peasant farmers’ rights, organic-only food production and ayurvedic health practices over conventional medicines, all of which she characterizes as an “earth democracy” movement necessary to restore “harmony,” people and nature.
Shiva receives financial backing from high-profile activist groups such as the Center for Food Safety, which shares offices with her in Washington. Among her most controversial talking points is her false claim that there was no hunger in India prior to the Green Revolution. The truth is almost 180 degrees the opposite, as the Green Revolution, marked in part by the introduction of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides enable massive increases in food production. A recent review of the evidence shows, “the production of cereal crops tripled during this period, with only a 30% increase in land area cultivated.” Shiva also blames the Green Revolution for increasing poverty, indebtedness and despair among farmers. Her notorious allegation that the introduction of insect-resistant GMO crops in India led many farmers to commit suicide has been evaluated and dismissed as inaccurate. Shiva is also a fierce opponent of so-called Golden Rice, a crop engineered to combat vitamin A deficiency in developing countries.
In response to the scheduling of her two talks at Stanford and UC Santa Cruz, 39 scientists from around the world co-authored an open letter to both universities protesting the invitations. The signatories told the GLP that their aim is to alert the events’ organizers, participants and attendees to the numerous falsehoods in Shiva’s philosophy. The letter, reproduced below in full, blasts Shiva for her “use of anti-scientific rhetoric to support unethical positions.” Neither university has scheduled a scientist to present the evidence-based case for crop biotechnology." geneticliteracyproject.org/2020/01/14/39-biotech-experts-open-letter-protests-anti-gmo-activist-vandana-shivas-anti-science-talks-at-stanford-and-uc-santa-cruz/
