I came to this channel just because I heard that left ear guitar riff when I was listening to this song this morning. I was a huge fan of the Tracy Chapman version and was very skeptical of this when it came out. But the music and mix are incredible.
I loved Tracy’s original version of this song, and instantly fell in love with the Luke Combs version. I’m generally not a fan of country music (especially stuff over the last 20 or so years), but do appreciate certain artists/songs (loooove me some Chris Stapleton ☺️). I must say that Luke Combs absolutely nailed this. I really have a hard time assigning a genre to Tracy’s version - it’s just a damn good song. 😂 Luke’s version has a hint of pop-country, but I feel like that’s largely just due to his natural Southern accent (in contrast to the grossly exaggerated twang that makes up so much of modern country). From an instrumentation point of view and vocal styling point of view, this version still keeps things pretty simple…in line with the simplicity of Tracy’s original. I do appreciate all of the subtle production details you point out that make this such a gem of a jam to listen to through the earphones/earbuds. I came here after needing to see reactions following the Tracy Chapman & Luke Combs Grammy performance, which was such a beautiful, wholesome, unifying moment. 😊 A truly rare thing these days. Tracy was absolutely radiant, and it was so good to see her get her flowers and soak in the moment. And it was so heartwarming to see how honored Luke Combs was to be up on that stage with her.
I feel the same way about country music. The last 20 years have been an absolute disaster while country music melted into pop music. That being said the last 3 or 4 years have shown there's a tidal wave of true country music artists coming through. I would say Zach Bryan is the most talented in a couple decades that not only does country but borders on outlaw type country while somehow being tapped into pop nusic. Its really cool to watch unfolding. Kind of reminds me of Johnny Cash.
You should Listen too The new AJR songs that have come out!! The DJ is crying for help, The dumb song, God is really real, and Yes Im a mess is coming out tonight! and there new album on november 3!!
