hello jimmy....my system is about 40 years old....works just fine but I have never seen a control board....the thermostat controls everything. Is that possible? Thanks
You're really creating a great legacy here Craig - it will live on even after your career is over. Sharing knowledge freely the way you do is one of the more noble things one can do. Bravo
Wow, wow, wow, your videos that you are showing online are phenomenal. I was an aircraft mechanic for 20 years then I became a locomotive engineer for the last 16 years, now I’m retired. When it was time to replace a 30 year old furnace I thought why not just get a package AC/furnace unit. After installation, (installed by licensed personal) I opened the panels to get model numbers and serial numbers for warranties. I thought to myself what a mangled spaghetti mess of wiring, all of this just to run a furnace and air conditioner. After realizing the cost of any service call, I decided that I needed to learn how my furnace works. After two months of watching all your videos I’m able to identify what every wire does in my furnace and AC compressor unit. I know what each component does and the purpose of it. I'm still learning some troubleshooting techniques. At this point the only thing that I know that I will not even attempt to do is to, replace any component that will break the integrity of the refrigerant system. If anything needs to be braised/soldered, the cost of having that done will be close to the price of a new unit. Its better just to buy a new unit. I did take an AC course in collage for diesel mechanic in which we had to get a 608 certification. I don't know if you offer that or not, but this would be the place to learn on how to handle refrigerants Every homeowner needs to know how this equipment works, even if they're not going work on it, they still need to know how to maintain it. I can only imagine how many house fires were caused by homeowners neglecting and or being naive towards their furnace and AC units.
I have years watching and learning from a true passionate technician. I really appreciate the time you take to share your knowledge with us here. Because of your teachings, I have become a much more confident technician and my knowledge has been expanded. Thank you very much
You’re a true educator my guy, been in the field for several decades now,I’d be lying if I say I’ve worked on every unit in this video and don’t need an assist . We forget most of what we work on if we don’t see it on regular basis. I personally need to refresh, and polish my skills every now and then, and believe your channel gives me the best opportunities to do so. Thank you for what you bring to our field Greg 👍🏽👍🏽
Wow - this was such an amazing crash course! I learned that, once you break the system down to its parts and give context to those parts, everything seems so much simpler. I appreciate you for making this freely available!
Your knowledge and the way you deliver that knowledge lends trust in what you say to be true. With your teaching and a lot of effort anyone could be a professional HVAC tech. Keep up the great work, and thank you.
Thank you so much I recognize your time involved in creating these videos, I am so happy to find you I know you are a Legacy to the next Generation people that is getting involved in these trade 25 years ago I was involved in clases. Like the one that you giving , I think about the many people that you are blessing with your knowledge, I am retired but like to watch videos like yours thank you for those that you are helping , that’s what I call a human with a Purpose in these world thank you. Because you are putting food in the tables of many family’s with these videos, GOD bless you and your family, thanks to all involved , blessings
👏Retired EE here. Always fascinated by HVAC. Thermodynamics was the most challenging University class I took on my way to becoming an MSEE. This channel provides some of the best technical/engineering education I’ve seen. Better than most of the content produced by equipment manufacturers or tech schools.
Yes ! Craig a want you to know you're the best instructor , and my confidence and skill level in the field is continuing to improve thanks to these videos .
Your videos are outstanding and very educational. 2nd year service tech here and I always find myself coming back to your videos for refreshers and learning something new! Thanks Craig!
Thank you so much for your kind words! It's awesome to hear that my videos have been helpful on your journey as a service tech. The fact that you're finding value in both refreshers and new insights means a lot. Keep up the great work in your second year, and remember that learning is a continuous process in this ever-evolving field.
You’ve said before that HVAC is changing everyday, I want to keep up with news and all that what are some good sources, apps or websites to keep being updated on this field that is changing everyday.
My biggest lesson learned about Flame rectification: if you have tested and cleaned a flame rod but you still get a sequence interruption after the burners fire - check the ground connections.
Im just here cause I'm interested. I'm thankful I didn't go to school for this. This is too much to think about. And this is just some furnaces. Didn't even get into boilers yet or anything else. Crazy how techs figure stuff out. Would drive me crazy. I get distracted very very easily.
Craig, you're an excellent instructor. I was a teacher for 13 years and saw your passion for the trade and sharing the knowledge and skills you learned all these years. I went to BFIT in Boston to learn the trade. I am learning a lot from your videos. Plus I already both your books as a bundle but I didn't get the cards. I must have done something wrong when ordering. Great job!
Awesome video! Found a bird sucked into inducer recently. 80% FAF was throwing codes and inducer would run but got hot. Decided to remove and found what is known as at work now as “Big Bird”
I learned after my 10 months that we could’ve took the EPA on our own time. More than half of “Class” quizzes made by the instructor from these videos and the book
When I 1st got hired I was the only one that had an EPA(12 trucks), so the next week they called everyone in and payed for them to get certified! I was the only 🤡 that got 15k+ in debt for mine!
*Love the size and it fits perfectly in a corner but **Fastly.Cool** the whole room. Really like how you can auto adjust how long you want the fan to be on. It is quite but highly effective.*
mitch...my system is about 40 years old....works just fine but I have never seen a control board....the thermostat controls everything. Is that possible? Thanks
greg...my system is about 40 years old....works just fine but I have never seen a control board....the thermostat controls everything. Is that possible? Thanks
Boy did I get a good laugh. Your story of when you went and pulled the silicone carbide HSI earlt on in your career. well.... I am only a second year apprentice, like you, I did the same thing recently and accidentally banged the HSI and it broke into multiple pieces lol. Great video!
Ah if I had these videos when I first started it would have been such a breeze. He’s doing the course work for you. I would brainwash Craig’s videos till it clicked.
The fact that you care enough to watch this stuff and try to follow along means you will do just fine. Refer to these videos when you struggle. Even after you get hired. You got this.
Watch "HVAC School" videos on refrigeration cycle and EPA 608. Fundamentals first. Expansion equals loss of heat and compression equals heat. One coil and fan distributes heat, another coil and fan distributes (loss of heat) cold. Fan speed/size, duct sizing, lineset sizing and coil sizing determines rejection of heat or (loss of heat) cold.
Great Video! On test leads with fluke meters I have often read a small resistance below one ohm. I only would replace the leads if that resistance varies and can add from there. Thanks for excellent lessons.
Glad I found you you wouldn’t happen to have motorhome/camper furnaces handy would you that would be a very interesting component to learn as well will bring you millions of views .
Hello. Great video. I live in an apartment and the gas furnace stops working during a power outage. Can I connect a vehicle battery or some other power source to the furnace so that it will run during power outage? Thanks
Great video - thank you. I am going to replace the furnace in my home that is 6500 feet above sea level. What adjustments or modifications do I need to do at this high altitude? Thank you
Thank you - Great video in explaining everything about the furnace! But I do not understand the explanation of the ground voltage drop test @52:35. Why is the check measurements are in ohms instead of volts? I think you may meant to say is that with the power on (120V), the voltage drop should zero (therefore no resistance ), but if instead the voltage reading is like 0.4 V then that means there is problem (i.e. there is unaccounted resistance somewhere)?
I have a high efficiency furnace, according to the tech that came to look at it, but they think we need a new one and its a 2008 model lennox furnace. when do you think one would upgrade a furnace given the age of my furnace. I took you class sort of and watched 8 hours of different videos on YT. Not certified but i watched this video and now i should be lol. Merry Christmas Christmas 🎄
Thank you so very much for your efforts, I have a question, I see a part or two on the installed out on the return they have red wires and blinking indicators, what’s do you call that? and what the purpose of it? Thank you
On that millivolt gas valve. How important is the wiring colors to terminals? Does it matter where the red and white wires go on the terminals? Will it work with red wire on th and white wire on TH TP?
Hi, My gas furnace starts up like normal and after the main blower turns on and starts heating the house I notice the burner turns off for about 15 seconds then lights back up and continue turning on and off until the house is up to temp and then shuts off? I never noticed this before, is this a normal thing or is there something wrong and if there's something wrong what would it be? thanks, Dave
Is there ANY way that a 90% natural gas furnace could be venting what smells like a faint smell of "car exhaust" or the like!? I feel like when my furnace is on blowing I can detect that. Is it correct that my 25 year old Carrier 58GSC series upflow furnace does not have an inducer motor? My problem is that I set my thermostat and flip on the furnace power switch but only hear a click or clunk sound but nothing else happens.
Being that old,it might or might not,but it still will have a sequence of operation, what type of ignition?Do you own a meter have you checked voltage, power to furnace,24volts from transformer? If you dont know if you hsve an inducer or not you might want to call a professional.
Hello, I have a gas furnace and we bought heat pump a few years ago but can't find a person that can program it correctly to provide heat with two zones and be able to switch between gas and heat pump. Will be thankful for your input

Craig you have a true teaching gift! So much appreciate you providing all your information to us technicians. Thank you!
Glad you are enjoying the videos Jimmy! Thanks for your kind words!
I agree. I have learned so much from Craig. If you don’t have his book, get it, it’s very well laid out and has an insane amount of information in it.

AC Service tech is the best teacher on the planet!
"very much easier" ac service tech is one of my favorite channels
New hvac student here the sequence of operations in the beginning is a lifesaver. I’m sure the rest will come to me with experience
