The saddest part of Interview is where when Lennon is asked at the end by interviewer if they were aware of everything around them and there surroundings? Lennon replied oh yea, cause if not you might get shot!
I wish so much I could have been there in N.Y. City outside John’s apartment building to stop it. I came home that night after work and was watching Monday Night Football when fricking Howard Cosell made the announcement about John. I held my emotions back until the next morning when I was alone. You know what I mean.
What strikes me about the Beatles is how natural and honest they were. No pretentious or canned responses. Just straight forward answers. Also they didn't take all the attention that seriously or let it go to their heads. Also I was 19 when this interview was taking place.
The four were instructed what and what not to say. It did irk the four of them, especially John. They has four of these banl interview in three weeks. It is a credit to them for the way conducted themselves. Probably because this was the last interview on the Australian tour.
Sure Brian coached them on some things not to say but they seemed sensible enough to stay out of trouble. Elvis had a huge flub early in his carreer when a TV reporter asked him about a girlfriend or getting married and Elvis said Why buy the cow when the milk is free? 😀 Pretty shocking stuff in the 50's and Col Parker damn near put an end to interviews after that.
Australian interviewers were always so sensible, asking such good questions and being so aware of what the stars of the interview were doing. American and British interviewers always asked asinine questions which provoked sarcastic replies.
Galericulus I could not agree with you more! Watching some of those old interviews is cringy and uncomfortable because of the stupid questions. And after only a couple of years, the Beatles attitudes toward these press conferences became so negative, but do you blame them? If you haven’t seen it, look up Paul’s response to being questioned about writing songs about lesbians and prostitutes 🤣. Probably my favorite snarky response ever.
Not always. In 1972 they kept asking Black Sabbath only about their name, and then only about marijuana; NOTHING about their music, recording, etc. But here, they were excellent, especially the question about how much they rehearse new material. Paul's answer was only valid for recording, but in Barry Miles book The Beatles - a diary: an intimate day by day history, Barry reveals always at least two days rehearsals before every tour.
4:19 - I love Paul's "eye roll". He's asked a question about composing, and is briefly interrupted by John, and then the same reporter moves on to another question to John without waiting for the answer to his previoius question that Paul was formulating. The Beatles had to have a healthy dose of tolerance for stupid members of the press.
RANDY JUDAH TORREZ < @ 10:56 Paul, starts looking so sad and concerned, the look on his face is eerie. I wonder what he was thinking about, it's as if he wasn't there or he really didn't want to be there. 🤔
2:51 George: I had a feeling we might have got shot. Cause it's the first time being seated at the back of a car waving. You know ... pow!. The Beatles still had the tragic Kennedy assassination fresh in their minds. In fact, George mentions in the Beatles anthology, that on their first tour of the U.S., they refused a ticker tape parade in San Francisco because of fear of getting shot by some lunatic with a rifle.
This is one of the few press conference that i like. It seems the boys are chilling out and enjoying the interview.. The press people are polite as well.. Love it!
A few fun facts, Adelaide gave the Beatles the biggest greeting of their entire career with over 300,000 people turning out, around half the city's population at the time...Also the Adelaide concert was never originally planned and only happened because local DJ Bob Francis organised a petition demanding the Beatles come and play. It was said to be a huge very happy well behaved crowd who obviously loved the Beatles more than most... This always made me proud of little o'l Adelaide...
I was actually raised in Adelaide where this interview took place, and I remember the day that he was shot. I was just a 10 yr old kid in primary school and already a Beatles fan. I remember this day clearly. And believe it or not my own father was born on the same day and year as John Lennon and is also named John!
It was the biggest thing in Adelaide since the Queen visited in 1954. I used to go to a dance called The Rincon Stomp at the Henley Beach lifesaving club. There was sand on the first floor dance floor a pool to swim in downstairs and a group dressed in Beatles suits playing Beatles tunes which was the best. Fab.
erowal1 Sort of, it's the way he and John would communicate during interviews. At 10:44 you can see John do the same thing with his hand on top of the table, and at 10:52 Paul responds to him.
It's Paul continueing John's walking fingers thing. John did that to Paul for fun. He'd walk his fingers up Paul's arm and to his face. John started it and Paul finished it on himself which is so silly and cute.
They have said in other interviews later on that they had secret communications between them that only they knew. George also sees John do it and smiles and kind of sticks out his tongue and then taps his fingers on the table while Paul walks his fingers up his own arm.
Jimmy seems like a decent guy and a good sport. Shy and modest, he seems happy to remain in the background unless he is asked a direct question. But he also appears to be enjoying his very brief time in the spotlight. It's hard to imagine what it must have been like to be plucked seemingly out of nowhere (although he was known around Liverpool as a respected session man) and flown halfway around the world to take the stage with the biggest act in the world. On stage, he was clearly nervous that he'd miss a beat or get something wrong, but he knew the songs and did a very competent job keeping the beat until Ringo was well enough to rejoin the group.
When you compare this with the US press conference a few months before, the Aussie press come across as so much more likeable... they also get the northern humour a lot more.

Don't forget Cynthia Lennon. She was with John and supported him and the Beatles right from the very start from their days in Liverpool in the 50s as a group. Everyone always overlooks her devotion to the Beatles success
I'm glad they came to Oz in our winter, coz it can get stinking hot here in summer (especially in Adelaide). But Adelaide should be proud because 300 thousand people turned out to welcome them there, which was just over 44% of the total population of that city.

Yeah I think what ruined this experience for him and ultimately, saddened his life moving forward; was that he let it consume him too much. He gave in to the feelings and temptations of being a fill in. Instead he should have acted more confident and nonchalant.
During their boat ride through the Amsterdam Canals, they saw a guy wearing some kind of dark blue cape. They liked it so much, they wanted to have one like that. Mal Evans got off the boat and bought the cape from the guy. But since they all wanted to have one, they had copies made in Hong Kong (their next stop). They wore them when they arrived in Sydney, but during their ride on an open truck from the airport to the hotel, the rain washed off the dark blue coulor.

Poor Jimmy he should have took the "fill in" as just that and nothing more. I wish he would have said "I'm just here for 8 shows then I'm done. Take it for what it is and Nothing more. I think he was hoping like we all would be but that just made the whole scene that much more devastating for Jimmy.
Yeah I think what ruined this experience for him and ultimately, saddened his life moving forward; was that he let it consume him too much. He gave in to the feelings and temptations of being a fill in. Instead he should have acted more confident and nonchalant.
John...you have to be aware of whats going on around you or you might get shot...prophetic

Could anyone hear what John said about Amsterdam?
During their boat ride through the Amsterdam Canals, they saw a guy wearing some kind of dark blue cape. They liked it so much, they wanted to have one like that. Mal Evans got off the boat and bought the cape from the guy. But since they all wanted to have one, they had copies made in Hong Kong (their next stop). They wore them when they arrived in Sydney, but during their ride on an open truck from the airport to the hotel, the rain washed off the dark blue coulor.
Were's Ringo?
