      Dear Dharma Friend, I'll try, but I'm personally not the best with Devangari, I'll check with some friends. The confusion is the cale cule cunde ... it is the "ch" sound (which always makes transliterations difficult) so I believe in devangari it is:
      ॐ कले कुले कुन्दी स्वहा
      But I don't have a scriptual source in Devanagari, still checking. If anyone else knows for certain, please help out.In kindness, BW. 🙏🙏🙏

    Thank you for this video!
    I have noticed a couple of comments asking about whether there is any difference between Tara and Cundi and would like to give my two cents as well.
    In a way, you could say that Tara and Cundi are different but also the same. In certain Japanese traditions for example, both Tara and Cundi are classified as manifestations of Avalokitesvara/Kannon.*
    To be precise, Cundi is a bit complicated since some JP lineages consider her a 'Kannon' - a form of Avalokitesvara - but others see her as a female buddha, a 'Buddha-Mother' or Butsumo (仏母). But of course, this is ultimately a minutia, a distinction without a difference. We can say both are correct.
    (* The historical reason is that Avalokitesvara was the more popular bodhisattva in East Asia and in Japan specifically, so the other bodhisattvas of the Lotus Family and a few other enlightened deities such as Cundi or Amoghapasha or Parnashabari were generally categorized as 'Kannons', manifestations of Avalokitesvara. This is also why Tara wasn't historically a well-known bodhisattva in Japan: she is included in the Womb Realm Mandala as a member of the Lotus Family, and her rite - grouped under the 'Kannon' rubric - is passed down in some lineages, but she only became more famous after Tibetan Buddhism made inroads in Japan.)

    Hi BuddhaWeekly, I have a question!
    the Cundi Dharani seems to be primarily associated with karma-cleansing or purifying. It is also said to fulfill wishes and generate merit.
    Does this dharani fulfill wishes by clearing the obstacles blocking the practitioner from attaining their wishes via karma-purifying AND while building up merit at the same time?

    • @BuddhaWeekly
      @BuddhaWeekly  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, "Shakyamuni proclaimed that her mantras shake the Buddha-worlds, defeat all demons, and bestow many miraculous powers." So, certainly, there's more than just purification of negative karma and merit accumulation -- they are the milestones on the road leading to worldly and supreme siddhis (accomplishments).
      As with all Buddhist practices of the Mahayana Path, the accumulations of merit have to be dedicated to the cause for Enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings (Bodhichitta). The benefits of Cundi Dharani are far more extensive than the short statement here: "Cunda quickly ripens all spiritual powers.
      She motivates Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to help living beings, induces beings to embark on the Buddhist Path, and inspires renouncers and solitary achievers to follow the Bodhisattva Way.
      Shakyamuni proclaimed that her mantras shake the Buddha-worlds, defeat all demons, and bestow many miraculous powers.
      Through the recitation of her mantra, all diseases are purified, and Buddhahood is quickly attained.
      Even a tenth-level Bodhisattva does not surpass her in brilliance.
      All worldly and spiritual perfections are attained through her mantra."
      The last line there indicates worldly and spiritual (mundane and super mundane) siddhis and perfections. Siddhis doesn't exactly mean wishes, it means accomplishments, and, of course in Mahayana tradition the accomplishment certainly can benefit self but it has to also benefit others. It's the "great vehicle" meant to hold all sentient beings:-)
      Definitely, if you feel attracted to Cundi's Dharani, rest assured that with devotion, faith and proper Bodhichitta (the intention to benefit all sentient beings through the cause for Enlightenment) you will certainly do more than just purify karmas. You'll feel the effect in the four accomplishments, acitivities and siddhis in your life as your merit increases, your devotion and faith increases, and your accumulations and purifications progress.
      Hope that helps. May all beings benefit.

    Hallo! Some questions. Is Cundi a form of Tara ? In other words, if i recite Tara, am i reciting Cundi too? Or...if I recite Cundi, then I see Avalokiteshvara, Tara and Vajrapani. So...practicing Cundi, am i practicing all of three together? I have...a little confusion when there are many buddhas and bodhisattvas, and i "want to think" that if i practice one or two, only one of two, i am really practicing all together. Because it would really be impossible...to recite 1000 mantras and practicing all. So...i want to think it is up to me to decide what i prefer to recite, one ore more (for example...Cundi and Tara together?).
    Thanks for your answer 🥰

    • @BuddhaWeekly
      @BuddhaWeekly  6 месяцев назад +4

      Yes, it's a very good question, thank you. Yes, the idea of Yidam practice in Buddhism is that you choose one form of Enlightenment for your main practice, with the understanding the practicing one Yidam is the same as practicing all. (Also, more directly in answer to your question, Cundi is an emanation of Compassion, and so is Tara, although she emanates as the Activity of All the Buddhas, so she has a particular focus, as does Cundi.)
      The Enlightened deities are not bound by ego and individuality. They are emanations who appear to us in forms we relate to, since they are not limited by transient states of appearance.
      In his commentary, Gelek Rimpoche explained that “The Buddha doesn’t mean just one Buddha, Buddha means all the enlightened ones.” This concept is reinforced in various Sutras, such as the Avatamsaka Sutra: “All Buddhas are One Buddha.” [4] This does not mean that all Buddhas and enlightened deities are identical in the conventional sense but ultimately, their essence is the same.
      Without getting into a long discussion on Advaya (non duality), the important concept is that Buddhas - who are free from conventional reality - can be thought of as both individuals (in the conventional sense, for the purposes of specialized meditation practices) or as non dual One.
      Gelek Rimpoche explains: “That is why you don’t have to think, ‘Yeah, I have Lama Vajrayogini here, but I have forgotten Shakyamuni, I forgot the Medicine Buddha, I forgot Tara there. What has happened to my refuge?”
      His Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche the Third said:
      “Why are there so many? Yidams are visualized pure forms that manifest from dharmadhatu’s empty essence as the lucid self-display of our Lama’s compassion.” The goal of Yidam practice is critical to understanding these forms: ”
      He continued: “I mentioned that students have different mental capacities, views, and goals; they have different hopes and fears. Yidams are images for the benefit of students’ varying propensities. One leads one’s life in reliance on a vast variety of concepts. Therefore one needs a reference-point in practice, too, a reference-point that accords with one’s personal inclinations. Students aren’t ready to focus their attention on the ultimate yidam and consequently need pure representations... Each yidam symbolizes one of the many aspects of clinging and clutching. ..”
      So, usually with the help of our Guru, or with the guidance of our own mind, we focus on the form that we need most at this time.
      Gelek Rinpoche pointed out that if we are active students who took many empowerments we'd have to practice ten hours a day just to meet our commitments. The secret it choosing your one focus -- Tara, Chundi, whichever form you need to focus on now), then practice a form of "Jewel Collection Refuge"
      “Jewel Collection Refuge,” is always a part of Yidam practices. For example, when a student visualizes all the Buddhas and enlightened beings dissolving into the Yidam or Guru (regardless of your Yidam Sadhana, this is usually near the beginning), this is basically - at least in part - a mental visualization of “Jewel Collection Refuge.”
      “This system is called ‘jewel collection refuge’,” explained Gelek Rimpoche in the Vajrayogini commentary. “This is what we call the jewel collection system: one object representing everybody.”
      Since in ultimate terms, all Enlightened deities are Oneness this becomes a complete practice. (This is excerpted from a feature in Buddha Weekly here: buddhaweekly.com/?p=7387
      Hope this helps. In kindness, BW

      Any emanation of Compassion is related to Guanyin or Avalokiteshvara. There is also a tradition in many Mahayana lineages that Mother Cundi is an emanation of Avalokiteshvara. Each lineage states it differently. But the Great Bodhisattva of Compassion is Avalokiteshvara, from which all compassionate emanations arise (at least according to some lineages). Whether you treat that as literal or not, will depend on your perceptions. In kindness 🙏🙏🙏🙏

    • @BuddhaWeekly
      @BuddhaWeekly  6 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, the varadamudra (Sanskrit: वरदमुद्रा, romanized: varadamudrā) is a mudra symbolising dispensing of boons. It is represented by the palm held outward, with the fingers outstretched and pointing downwards. Sometimes, the thumb and the index finger meet, forming a circle. This is Mother Cundi's Mudra, although many Buddhas who grant blessings show this mudra. You'll see it especially in her four armed form where the bottom right hand is down and outstretched. She is granting siddhis and blessings through this gesture. In kindness 🙏🙏🙏

      That's the Maha Cundi Root Mudra, performed by interlace the little fingers and ring fingers of both hands inside the palms. Extend the middle fingers so their tips touch. Maneuver the index finger of each hand to press upon the back of each corresponding middle finger. Bring the thumbs together so they touch side by side. It symbolizes the root of all chakras. Sometimes you do see Cundi with the Dharmachakra mudra as well, as with Mahavairochana, representing the Wheel of Dharma.

    Hello
    What is the difference between Tara and Chundi?

    • @BuddhaWeekly
      @BuddhaWeekly  6 месяцев назад +8

      In essence they are both Mother of Enlightenment, which can manifest in multiple ways. Mother Tara is the Activity of Compassion and Wisdom of all the Buddhas. Mother Cundi is Wisdom of all the Buddhas. Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin) is the Compassion of all the Buddhas. The three aspects of Enlightenment, generally, can be thought of as Wisdom, Compassion and the Activity of Wisdom and Compassion. (As Bodhisattvas, these manifest as Manjushri (wisdom) Avalokiteshvara (compassion) and Vajrapani (activity or power). As Mothers this manifests as Cundi (Wisdom) Avalokitesvara (Compassion) and Tara (Activity.) As Buddhas these are the Dhyani Buddhas: Vairochana (or any Dhyani Buddhas for various types of Wisdom), Amitabha (Compassion) and Amoghasiddhi (Activity.)
      (Without Activity, since we live in a "karmic" or activity Samsaric world, wisdom and compassion cannot benefit sentient beings without activity, so Tara is that Enlightened Activity.) This is why Tara is so near and dear to so many beings in Samsara, since we live in a Karmic world. She is the closest to us, you could say. At the same time, Activity without wisdom or compassion create negative karma, so you can say we need all three. Hope that helps. In kindness, BW ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏

      the principal text is The Dharani of the Goddess Cundā. (I'm not sure of the Tibetan text title-- cited from Himalayan Art not from 84000.co as there's no English translation that I can find). The mantra of Chunda was also made famous in the Karandavyuha Sutra. This is a Sutra Dharani. Other Tibetan sources are: "Ritual descriptions for the four armed iconographic form of Chunda can be found in the Bari Gyatsa (Konchog Lhundrub edited version #34) and the Drub Thab Gyatso (Namkha Chime edited version #69)." The Bari Gyatsa. Lineage: Pandita Amoghavajra, Bari Lotsawa Rinchen Drag. The Sutra Dharani as presented here is from Sanskrit translations, not via translations in the Kangyur. How that helps. In kindness, BW. 🙏🙏🙏
