The bass isn't sludgy. Cliff played his bass with tons of distortion. Regular bass is clean and thumps. Cliff was a master. He had his own unique style and it was extremely powerful.
For those who don't play Bass: Distortion on Bass always sounds sludgy, because the lower registers of the Bass just don't resonate as cleanly as the higher registers of the Guitar. You can get a slightly cleaner sound using Fuzz instead of Distortion, but even Fuzz will sound a bit sludgy on the Bass. Infact you have to be more choosy and careful about using effects on Bass then on Guitar overall, because even basic effects like Chorous or Reverb can produce some pretty ugly sounds if you don't know what you're doing.
I would say that sludge is a great way to describe bass distortion and that's a good thing. That's an element it adds to the music. It puts the meaty muscle onto the hook.
Metallica did a concert with the San Francisco symphony in 2019 called S&M2, a sequel to one they’d done 20 years prior. At S&M2, one of the bassists from the orchestra, Scott Pingle, played a tribute of this song for Cliff Burton with Lars coming in on drums just like he does in the album. It’s an amazing version of Anesthesia, also worth checking out.
Its unique and interesting rendition from mr. Pingle, but the sound of the instrument itself wasn't my favorite. But still for the moment and the honoring of cliff in that moment was tremendous
I'm not so sure. I think he was such an intelligent, progressive musician that he would probably have left Metallica and formed his own band or just gone solo. So, Lars and James would've been free to turn Metallica into what it is now.

This "new" sound was recorded 40 years ago! Old school distortion and wah pedal. Nothing too fancy, but as mind blowing now as then. Also, the "high notes" at the end are made by tapping the strings into the pickups. Very unique technique. This song launched thousands of metal bassists throughout 80s and 90s.
The real pleasure is watching Cliff play this live. Seeing his hand movements and watching him headbang constantly throughout the entire solo is just…insanity. It’s another experience entirely than just hearing the studio track of it.
And I got to see him do it live back in the day. I'm incredibly happy that I was able to see Metallica when they were up and coming. Basically creating a scene. It was mind blowing for 1984-ish. Honestly.

Exactly. Anybody could do that. But why would they? Don't get me wrong, I like it. But it isn't exactly mind-blowing or anything just because he played a bass like a guitar.

Keep in mind, Cliff had a ton of distortion and overdrive going in this solo. A bass does not always sound like this. More often than not it's very clean.

This LIVE , shows the youth of the band, the RAWness, that they used to have ( they are still Metallica, i know, but father time is undefeated ) And, Cliff was a kind, soul, that just liked to make music..... He is truly missed... Along with Randy Rhodes , DimeBag Darrell Abbot & Vinnie Abbot , Chris Cornell & unfortunately, so many, many more *R I P* 😥 So, if you just want to appreciate the BASS, as it often seems like the forgotten / unheard instrument of the band.... Here are a few bass players, that should be isolated, and listened to, in their music, or even better, stand alone -- Les Claypool (Primus) , Geddy Lee (Rush) , Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) , Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) , Billy Sheehan (played w/ many bands over his many years) , Jimbo Wallace (Reverend Horton Heat) , Lemmy Killmeister (MotorHead) , Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath) , Bootsy Collins (Parliment / Funkadelic) -- and, Les Claypool stands out, among all of them , still to this day, and he does have many bass solos on you tube - and, dont forget - he does the south park theme as well as the robot chicken theme - ✌
Good list o' bassists, but I'd throw Chris Squire in there to round out the classic bass education. Also, listening to JPJ on Lemon Song is an epic experience.

Cliff Burton was every bit as important to bass as Jimi Hendrix was to guitar. Metallica released a VHS tape in 1986 that served as a tribute to his legacy, called "Cliff 'Em All". It's the only video release I can think of that is just as vital as an album. Those high pitched noises at the end were made by Cliff pushing his strings against the magnetic poles of the pick-ups in his bass.
That’s a bass with very, very heavy effects (fuzz, distortion, and others) applied to it. That’s why it sounds more like a very distorted electric guitar. That’s not a typical sound of a bass. And to be honest, I think Cliff made it sound even more like that because it was a solo. He likely used less fuzz/distortion in a band context.
He used a tonnnn of fuzz in songs too. It's all over the Ride the Lightning album. Call of Ktulu uses heavy distortion and he's basically playing a lead bass style for a lot of the song
Oh for sure he used a lot of fuzz in songs too. I just think it’s possible he boosted it a bit more because it was solo. I don’t know of course, but he may have boosted it another 10-20% or so. His bass wouldn’t have sat as well in the mix otherwise. Also, this was from Kill ‘em All, where he used less effects in songs than what he used on later albums
I don't know about him being the most musically educated because James grew up in a musical household with both parents being musicians of one form or another. But I see what you're saying and I get your point. He probably was right up there in musical training as James was and had a good jump on the rest of the band.
Cliff was the most musically educated and gifted member of the band,when he died Metallica had one great album after that which he wrote some songs on and after JFA they weren’t the same,imagine if he didn’t die,they albums that could of been.

I was Blessed to get to see Cliff do this live! I was actually standing with my arms resting on the stage right in front of Cliff here in Kansas City at the Uptown theater! Mind blowing talent...he gave me 1/2 of the heineken that he was drinking and flat rumbled the entire crowd into Oblivion! He was gone a short while later, RIP Cliff!
Fact - the first time Lars and James saw Cliff play in a show with his previous band Trauma, they didn't realise it was a bass, and decided they had to get him in the band ! Cliff lived in SF and they lived in LA - Cliff would join only if they moved to SF and the rest is history . . . .
There is a great version of his song on their latest S&M album played on a bass (orchestral style) that came out about a year ago (recorded in 2019). Cliff's dad was in the audience to witness the effects of his son's legacy just before he passed on 2020.
This song inspires people to become bass players to this day. It's an EPIC contribution that can't be understated. Also... you can't compare the tones that Cliff got out of his bass with standard bass. He had a fairly modified Rickenbacker and played through a wah pedal, as well as several others I'm sure. His tone was completely unique.
All hail Cliff Burton! He could make this instrument sing and dance like no one before or after him. There is a video on RUclips where he plays this live and it is 120% worth to see the absolute maestro of this instrument at work... He was like an 18 year old snot nosed kid here and passed away in a horrible car crash at the ripe old age of 23. He was just getting started and had a million miles to go and show us what that 4 string instrument was all about. All bow down and hail Cliff Burton and god bless his father who passed away a couple of years ago.
Cliff was one of the first to use heavy electric guitar distortion with his bass. There's an interview of James Hetfield saying he was driving with a friend to hangout at Cliff's place in the back country after they'd recently met and on the drive they heard what sounded like electricity screaming and wailing in the surrounding hills. When they got to the house they realized it was just Cliff playing his bass with distortion and with the volume turned all the way up lol.. Love your guys' reactions, especially the Metallica ones! This Track is indication of why it was such a tragedy he passed so young, he like Randy Rhodes was one of the most innovative players of his instrument type in his generation. he revolutionized the sounds of bass. Its sad that so many gifted musicians suffer tragic deaths.

This is and has been my favorite Metallica song since I first heard it when I was 16 back in 1986. Cliff was a prodigy cut short in life. RIP Cliff. Metal is sludge, this is metal. Metallica lost its sludge when they lost Cliff.
How cool that they listened to Anesthesia. How did they even hear about this song? Was so hoping it would role into Whiplash. Its really only in the digital music era that the two songs are so separated. Played on an album (as I first listened to it in 1986), the first song just roles right into the second. The two song combo is the Ultimate Metallica IMO. It has Cliff highlighted at his best, it’s off their first album, and Whiplash is an absolutely badass sound with a badass message about Metallica and their fans. The final message in Whiplash is “we’ll never stop we’ll never quit cuz we’re Metallica.” The best. Ultimate Metallica.
The reason this was so wild back in the day was because it DIDN'T sound like a bass at all. Cliff is playing through tons of distortion and uses a wha-wha pedal which makes the whooshing noises..
First time I hear this 1984 I was 10 years old at summer church camp. There was a Japanese exchange student there that snuck in Kill Em All & Ride the Lightning...I was blown away, especially of Pulling Teeth when the drums kick in. Metallica fan for life!
July 16th, 1986, in Fort Wayne Indiana. I was lucky enough to see Mr. Burton rock out live just a few months before he was killed by that damn bus. Amazing performance. Battery, Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), The Thing That Should Not Be, Seek and Destroy, Creeping Death and the Encore was Fade to Black and Damage, Inc. It's not just a bass, it's Cliffs bass. Hetfield once said when he first time arrived at Cliffs house, he heard strange sound that kept all wildlife far away that place. That was Cliff playing 🤘
Cliff Burton was the Jimi Hendrix of the bass guitar! This is like 1983 too. No studio mastering, no new technology, he is for real making those sounds from a bass guitar! The live versions sound exactly the same too! He was a master of his craft for sure.
Back in 1982 when cliff Burton joined Metallica, he had 2 conditions, 1st was they move from LA to san Fransisco, 2nd was that he got to do a bass solo, they had no problems with either request, because they were amazed at his playing and musical knowledge
For me, this is the purest Metallica. This has the feeling of a young reincarnated Beethoven. It's dirty and raw, but exudes passion -- no frills, just youthful talent and passion coming out of someone's garage.
Cliff was a bass prodigy and this was him going fairly innovative with working the instrument. Like Van Halen or Hendrix on guitar. to hear some more real stand out playing you should react to the bassist "Flea" from the Red Hot Chilli peppers.
Watching Cliff do this on stage live in a 2000 seat venue is a memory that shall never leave me (along with meeting him and the others before the show).
Cliff was one of a kind. He definitely changed metal. The only other person I've seen play a bass this way was Billy Sheehan doing a solo in the mid 80's. He is also a master at bass but completely different style of playing
There's a version of this on the DVD "Cliff 'em All" that is titled "Cliff's Second Show" with Metallica. He does an early version of this. You can see the groove and "stank" he puts into the composition/performance. You can also appreciate the techniques he uses. For example, when Lexi first says "What?!" Cliff is finger tapping. . . . Also, there is a live version of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" from about 1985 and Cliff varies the intro bass solo to that song. Worth checking out.

Got to see Metallica open for Ozzy a couple of months after Master of Puppets was released, and not long before Cliff was taken far too soon. Dude was STOOPID insane playing the bass...Kinda like Hendrix in that you were hearing sounds that you've never heard before.
I seen them in Texas that year. Was my 10th birthday present from my mom (who went along). She knew of Ozzy, but nothing of Metallica and wasn't about to turn a 10 yr old loose in an arena like that. Anyways.. Yeah she was a life long fan after that show. We went to 14 more concerts together before she passed away in 2020. She was that cool mom.

Cliff trained as a jazz/fusion bassist. His influences were guys like Jaco Pastorius, and, Stanley Clarke. He brought something new to metal.
Oddly enough, Jaco died the very following year and almost to the day that Cliff died( Cliff on the 27th of September and Jaco on the 21st).

Cliff was the most musically educated and gifted member of the band,when he died Metallica had one great album after that which he wrote some songs on and after JFA they weren’t the same,imagine if he didn’t die,they albums that could of been.

I was Blessed to get to see Cliff do this live! I was actually standing with my arms resting on the stage right in front of Cliff here in Kansas City at the Uptown theater! Mind blowing talent...he gave me 1/2 of the heineken that he was drinking and flat rumbled the entire crowd into Oblivion! He was gone a short while later, RIP Cliff!
Anesthesia is the bass solo, pulling teeth is when the guitars and drums kick in. Classic jam. Cliff was an amazing bassist.
Fact - the first time Lars and James saw Cliff play in a show with his previous band Trauma, they didn't realise it was a bass, and decided they had to get him in the band ! Cliff lived in SF and they lived in LA - Cliff would join only if they moved to SF and the rest is history . . . .

There is a great version of his song on their latest S&M album played on a bass (orchestral style) that came out about a year ago (recorded in 2019). Cliff's dad was in the audience to witness the effects of his son's legacy just before he passed on 2020.

I play guitar and this bass solo has inspired me for years.
This song inspires people to become bass players to this day. It's an EPIC contribution that can't be understated. Also... you can't compare the tones that Cliff got out of his bass with standard bass. He had a fairly modified Rickenbacker and played through a wah pedal, as well as several others I'm sure. His tone was completely unique.

All hail Cliff Burton! He could make this instrument sing and dance like no one before or after him. There is a video on RUclips where he plays this live and it is 120% worth to see the absolute maestro of this instrument at work... He was like an 18 year old snot nosed kid here and passed away in a horrible car crash at the ripe old age of 23. He was just getting started and had a million miles to go and show us what that 4 string instrument was all about. All bow down and hail Cliff Burton and god bless his father who passed away a couple of years ago.
Cliff was one of the first to use heavy electric guitar distortion with his bass. There's an interview of James Hetfield saying he was driving with a friend to hangout at Cliff's place in the back country after they'd recently met and on the drive they heard what sounded like electricity screaming and wailing in the surrounding hills. When they got to the house they realized it was just Cliff playing his bass with distortion and with the volume turned all the way up lol.. Love your guys' reactions, especially the Metallica ones! Hope you do the remaining instrumentals sometime!!

This Track is indication of why it was such a tragedy he passed so young, he like Randy Rhodes was one of the most innovative players of his instrument type in his generation. he revolutionized the sounds of bass. Its sad that so many gifted musicians suffer tragic deaths.

This is and has been my favorite Metallica song since I first heard it when I was 16 back in 1986. Cliff was a prodigy cut short in life. RIP Cliff. Metal is sludge, this is metal. Metallica lost its sludge when they lost Cliff.
How cool that they listened to Anesthesia. How did they even hear about this song? Was so hoping it would role into Whiplash. Its really only in the digital music era that the two songs are so separated. Played on an album (as I first listened to it in 1986), the first song just roles right into the second. The two song combo is the Ultimate Metallica IMO. It has Cliff highlighted at his best, it’s off their first album, and Whiplash is an absolutely badass sound with a badass message about Metallica and their fans. The final message in Whiplash is “we’ll never stop we’ll never quit cuz we’re Metallica.” The best. Ultimate Metallica.
The reason this was so wild back in the day was because it DIDN'T sound like a bass at all. Cliff is playing through tons of distortion and uses a wha-wha pedal which makes the whooshing noises..

First time I hear this 1984 I was 10 years old at summer church camp. There was a Japanese exchange student there that snuck in Kill Em All & Ride the Lightning...I was blown away, especially of Pulling Teeth when the drums kick in. Metallica fan for life!
Back in the stone age l seen Metallica open for Iron Maiden when they was just starting. Cliff was a head banging mad man. Hair flying everywhere.

It's not just a bass, it's Cliffs bass. Hetfield once said when he first time arrived at Cliffs house, he heard strange sound that kept all wildlife far away that place. That was Cliff playing 🤘

Cliff Burton was the Jimi Hendrix of the bass guitar! This is like 1983 too. No studio mastering, no new technology, he is for real making those sounds from a bass guitar! The live versions sound exactly the same too! He was a master of his craft for sure.
Back in 1982 when cliff Burton joined Metallica, he had 2 conditions, 1st was they move from LA to san Fransisco, 2nd was that he got to do a bass solo, they had no problems with either request, because they were amazed at his playing and musical knowledge

Cliff was one of a kind. He definitely changed metal. The only other person I've seen play a bass this way was Billy Sheehan doing a solo in the mid 80's. He is also a master at bass but completely different style of playing

There's a version of this on the DVD "Cliff 'em All" that is titled "Cliff's Second Show" with Metallica. He does an early version of this. You can see the groove and "stank" he puts into the composition/performance. You can also appreciate the techniques he uses. For example, when Lexi first says "What?!" Cliff is finger tapping. . . . Also, there is a live version of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" from about 1985 and Cliff varies the intro bass solo to that song. Worth checking out.

Got to see Metallica open for Ozzy a couple of months after Master of Puppets was released, and not long before Cliff was taken far too soon. Dude was STOOPID insane playing the bass...Kinda like Hendrix in that you were hearing sounds that you've never heard before.
I seen them in Texas that year. Was my 10th birthday present from my mom (who went along). She knew of Ozzy, but nothing of Metallica and wasn't about to turn a 10 yr old loose in an arena like that. Anyways.. Yeah she was a life long fan after that show. We went to 14 more concerts together before she passed away in 2020. She was that cool mom.
