The thing I love the most about Decisive Battle is that it IS a heroic THEME, but it's reluctant. It's like the hero is not sure if he can really win. There are surges in courage and downfalls in doubt.
True! I personally love the composition of it: climbing horns, smooth strings, and screaming trumpets don’t sound like they work together, but they do. A very tense and thrilling piece indeed.

If someone had just explained to Shinji what happened while he was in the Eva and the situation they were in from the get-go, instead of strapping a death collar on his neck and treating him like garbage for reasons he couldn't possibly understand, he probably would have stayed with them. Shinji's the only one with any focus or development, and even that just amounts to putting him through such hell that by the end he's so beaten down he literally can't move.
The evangelion 1.0,2.0,3.0,(4.0) were intended to be taken as a "same but different" storyline. Although I personally didn't favor 3.0 as much as the others, it brings high hopes for the ending (4.0)
I do hope my old Laserdisc player still works long enough to rip this to digital: it has never be released in any other video format so far as I can tell (the CD is still available though).
I'd pay so much money to see and hear this live! This was my childhood. The Japanese really excel at creating post-utopia animes because of their own history with nuclear war and natural disasters. So many important human topics were covered in depth: depression, friendship, betrayal, troubled relationships with parents, overcoming personal fears, having the courage to fight for something bigger than yourself.

A commentary on the fetishization of Asuka and Rei? I dunno. Most of the really good Shinji and Kaworu scenes are based on character interaction rather than actually advancing the new plot line. Those scenes are great.

When everything sounds like SAO there's a problem. The more orchestrated stuff has a clear purpose with thought behind it when it comes to how it's used, when it's used, and why it's used. The difference in "goodness" comes down to how the music improves the art. Sometimes yea, you just need some blood pumping music. But when every anime does it. It's not special anymore.
