Husqvarna 122C Carb Adjust-What is "Four Stroking"?

- The term "Four Stroking" can be confusing when talking about 2 cycle engines but its really just the sound the engine makes when its getting more fuel than it needs. Listen to what it sounds like. #smallenginerepair
Great tips Scott. You are absolutely right about customers starting their equipment, especially in cold weather, and expecting it to rev up smoothly and cleanly. Opening up the low screw to drop a few hundred rpm on the rich side is the way to go! Later!
Yep, no matter how correct the adjustment is, customers don't like to wait.
Awesome explanation and demonstration! We appreciate your knowledge!
Thanks for watching!
I wanted to thank you for all your input. I'm working on different levels of certification for Stihl. At 56 yo it's a joy to use my hands again. Especially as a disabled vet. I've learned so much from your years of experience. I just received that spark tester ive seen you use in your diagnosis.
Let me know how that tester works out for you.
Absolutely, would you say it's helped you diagnose things quicker and more efficiently. Thank you
@@drmikeyb1 Its still a newer tool for me but it has helped a lot.
This helped alot. Apparently it is a common issue with the Husqvarna small 2 strokes. Chainsaws, string trimmers, leaf blowers, etc. This helped alot on finding the sound I am looking for
I'm glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Very educational. That tach is super cool too
Yes the tach is quite handy.
🤣Another great vid! It’s much too early in the year for thinking trimmers when -4F outside & snow covering the weeds.
I should probably be doing a few torpedo heater repair videos right now. Thanks for watching!
To me, I find it surprising how little carb adjustments affect engine RPM.
I've got another trimmer carb adjustment video coming up. Stay tuned!
Good Morning Brother 😀
Good morning!
Good work bud
Thanks for watching!
Noice! It’s interesting to think about how tuning a trimmer and a chainsaw are a bit different because you want a saw 4-stroking before it goes into the wood so when it’s under load it has enough power to cut and leans out during the cut. Did I get that right?
Yep. A trimmer just isn't exposed to the same high loads as a chainsaw.
@@TheGreasyShopRag Scott, do you have any videos showing how to tune a chainsaw, I'm particularly interested in how to tune ones with rev limited coils, since those can interfere in tuning by ear from what I understand
@@tomasznumrych7187 I'm sorry I don't have one of those videos but I'll see what I can do.
Does the thickness of the string matters or only the length when adjusting the H screw. Thx
I would say it only matters if you're going to change the thickness of the string after the adjustment. I think the answer is yes, the thickness (weight) matters.
I think you have some gremlins in the shop!!
You may be right. Some claim we have a ghost so why not gremlins.
@@TheGreasyShopRag lol!
Great explanation! I’ve done saws and trimmers the same. Lately tuning saws on idle and trimmers on high, then final adjust. Your thoughts please. How do you start/set fast idle screw?
I adjust chainsaw low speed on bench, go out and adjust hi speed in log then adjust low speed as needed. I then let the saw cool (usually overnight) and retest cold start.
@@TheGreasyShopRag I do trimmers hi first then low. Also set fast idle screw at middle of taper. Not sure if best way
@@steveriggenbach90 If you do Hi first then Lo, you will have to go back and adjust Hi after changing lo. At full throttle you are pulling fuel from all sources. The lo never shuts off so changing it will slightly change the hi mixture. How much? Not much. Try firing up a string trimmer then open and close the low while at full throttle. Does it change?
I bet you never expected to get RUclips homework 🙂
@@TheGreasyShopRag thanks will def try. I can always try to improve.
I always enjoy your videos, but on this one I heard but did not get an explanation of what four stroking actually is.
As I understand it four stroking is when the cylinder is filling with more fuel than can be cleanly burned and scavenged. I guess I've always used it as a reference point but never gave too much thought as to what is actually happening.
Thanks for the response.@@TheGreasyShopRag
Got any tips how to tune one of those barrel style single tuning screw Ryobi carburetors? I can't seem to get a good grasp on tuning my trimmer.
When you say single screw, are you counting the low speed in the top center of the "barrel"?
@@TheGreasyShopRag I'm referring to the one in the center of the throttle plate. There's also the idle a screw. Am I missing something?
@@tomasznumrych7187 I'm a little confused. First you said barrel style now you say throttle plate. In my mind thats two different styles. Go to my home page, find my email addy and send me a few pics of what you have. Maybe I can help.
@@TheGreasyShopRag will do
@@TheGreasyShopRagwell, I'm not totally a doofus, your email address is not visible when viewing your home page from the mobile app. I took a look from a browser and found it. You have an email incoming.
What kind of tool are you using to adjust the H/L screws?! On my machine it doesn't have a screw head.
Oh I found them. It looks funny. I'm having the same problem with my trimmer. It bogs down under load. Will be following this video for the next 24 hrs and see if I could get relief.
@@alreddy13 Thanks for tuning in!
OK, here goes: during the break you had a concrete saw rental return because it wasn't running right. Different tools came out and in the end you diagnosed a plugged screen and needed the torch. Alternate: the four stroke guys came over while you were distracted and made a mess. You had to use the saw on the floor to start it up and pretend to cut them to scare them off.
Plausible but not correct. We had a concrete saw going out and I had to switch blades. The torch and scissors were for replacing the frayed rope i discovered during test run. Thanks for playing!
Looking to pick one up at tractor supply. These pretty reliable if you keep up with regular maintenance?
Yes they are fine as far as reliability but this is the smallest, entry level trimmer they offer. Not that theres anything wrong with that but don't expect a ton of power.
@@TheGreasyShopRag awesome thanks for the reply!
Is Can gas good for those? I just bought the same exact one.
It doesn't hurt, and stays fresh for a long time. Great for units that sit for a long time between uses.
Hello Scott, I really apologize for asking so many questions but I'm doing my damdest to learn more about this business at 56 yo. I work for a Stihl dealer but have numerous Husqvarna's that come in such as chain saws weed eaters eetc.I need to order a variety of fuel lines to accommodate the different models. We have home owners and numerous professional saws. We're in MS in a rural community where logging is big. Could you please advise which size fuel lines you would order and brand or anything else you advise. Thank you so much for always responding, take care brother.
Many pro grade saws use pre-formed lines so those aren't an issue. for everything else we use a selection of line found here: www.oregonproducts.com/en/search?q=tygon
@@TheGreasyShopRag thank you Mr. Scott. If you ever ride through MS. Let me know I'll buy you a steak dinner. Take care brother
Some canned fuel seems to run like your customer presented that trimmer. A bit rich is way better than a bit too lean if you want your tools to last. I think you had concrete saw clean and re-blade as the interruption, the 4 stroke guys are leary of your ire bu now. ;-)
Concrete saw was going on rent but needed a different blade. During test run I discovered it needed a new pull rope.
Not the weed eater in this video…
I thought richer was safer besides leaner is safer. Kinda confused here
Richer is safer and we're plenty rich by being just shy of four stroking with full load of string out. Does that make sense?
@@TheGreasyShopRag yeah thanks man
@TheGreasyShopRag I'm still learning all of this THERE'S A LOT TO LEARN
@@Lovinflyindrones2022 Ya but just like anything else, the more you do it the easier it gets.
@@TheGreasyShopRag that's right. Thanks again
Mine absolutely will not run on canned fuel.
What brand fuel?
Yo, why is the weed eater smoking so much?
Yo, give me a time stamp where you see smoke and I'll try to answer your question. I see none.
The EPA among others cry foul about S.O.R.E… A little bit of extra oil & sea foam won’t hurt. @@TheGreasyShopRag
They can't control what you put in the tank.@@twocyclesmoke
