Me and Paul! Besides being a great song, I love the way it slowly builds and all the players on the recording play exactly what the track needed and don't throw in anything extra just to show off.
Not a huge Willie fan but I do have some of his music in my collection, Greatest Hits etc and I like his collaborations with Waylon and others. Whiskey River is a great tune and Mama Don't Let Your Baby's Grow Up To Be Cowboys is cool too.
Me and Paul, City of New Orleans, Uncloudy Day, Night Life, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Red Headed Stranger, Yesterday's Wine...the list goes on... Thanks for the great stories! I love the Willie ones...you should do another George Jones one soon, it's been a bit since one of those came out.
I’m just in love with Willie’s “Stardust” album. I’ve seen him a few times and loved every song he sang and note he played. He has so many great songs and albums, but something about the tasty way he interprets those old standards makes Stardust the one I reach for. Willie is a musical hero. One night at the old Oakland Auditorium in the ‘70’s, he played a show during a crazy rainstorm that seemed to have kept the crowd unexpectedly small. Willie urged us all to come near the stage. He played an extra two hours that night to a cozy crowd and put a down-home spell on us all. It was like we were in his living room. Incredible.
When " Red headed Stranger " came out , I fell in love with " Blue eyes cryin' in the Rain " .....I learned to play it on my guitar and though I 'm not much of a singer started singing it. My grandmother heard me singing it one day and asked me where I had learned it as it was a very old song and one they used to play at barn dances when she was young . She said it reminded her of when grandpa and she had dated and she got misty eyed. So for Christmas I bought her the album, and I think I became her favorite grandson , at least for a while. I still love that sad old song as it conjures up great vignettes of two people I miss very much.
The way Tim describes Willie approaching people was exactly the way he approached us after a casino gig several years ago! Willie just walked up to us! Such a down to earth guy, and I think he got a kick out of me stammering and stumbling over words because I was standing next to WILLIE NELSON!! Didn't get high with him, but I'll always remember that night.
Sounds like a gloriously wonderful experience. I’d love to hang with Willie for an hour. Feel the same way about a lot of folks. Including you Otis. I love some of his new songs “energy follows thought” is genius truth. Roll me up and smoke me and it’s all going to pot are great. Blue eyes crying in the rain, angel flying to close to the ground, me and Paul, uncloudy days. Darkness on the face of the earth, crazy, hello walls and all if red headed stranger. It’s a long list to be sure…
I first saw Willie at Summerfest in Milwaukee in 1977. My mom loved Willie and decided it was worth taking the 4 hour trip with 9 year old me to see him. It was festival seating and we got to the gates early in hopes of getting decent seats. I was faster than her and we decided to let me run ahead and get our seats. When the gates opened I ran as fast as I could amongst a sea of scary looking bikers and made it to the last two spots on the front row on the stage left side. Mom was surprised and happy to have good seats and that I wasn't crushed in the mayhem. I have since taken my own son to see him several times starting with a great show on Mother's Day in 1999 at Kyle Petty's farm with my mom. My son and I went to see him last September in Raleigh. We left that show with the uneasy feeling that it might be our last time seeing him. I don't really have a favorite song but my favorite Willie song today is- Til I Gain Control Again. I know it is really a Rodney Crowell song but I love Willie's version.
Considering he is possibly our finest living singer-songwriter, Willie is an amazing musician. Not sure I can name another who is so great in both categories.
I love Willie! I was discussing his playing with a buddy tonight, as we listened to Django Reinhardt. He is a huge influence on his tone and phrasing. Great stories, Otis!
Right On , Willie is a killer guitar player . I rarely hear about his playing. It always leaves me thinking what people missing. It's so masterful. Thanks Otis another day I learnt something new
My favorite Willie Nelson song is "I'm Falling in Love Again " from Phases & Stages, with Johnny Gimble playing the *sweetest* part on that five-string fiddle.
When you are at the top of hill you don't have to show off and in my mind Willie has been at the top of the hill for at least the last 50 years. It shows he is really sure of himself and knows he doesn't have to impress anyone. I remember the first time I saw him on Austin City Limits, I had seen him back in the Nashville days but this was when he reemerged, there was no showing out. He knew he was good, he knew people would realize it and the ones that didn't really didn't matter. I believe "I've got to drunk" is my favorite today, tomorrow it might be something else.
Love the video. And Red headed stranger is my favorite. I’ll have another favorite in an hour, and so it goes. My father is a country and western listener. All the good ok boys. WJ,MH,JC, and of course DAC was the real outlaw. Thank you
I heard a story once that when they asked Willy if he still smokes weed he said "it's the only thing that keeps me from killing certain people". I had to quit weed a while back but if I had the chance to smoke with him I would have to do that. I love the way he delivered those classics on Stardust..When my wife and I got together in 1979 or 1980 that album came out so 'Stardust' the song was THEE song for that. I think tho to list a favorite you might have to go with one he wrote...Always loved 'Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground"
I don't get stoned now but I used to. and I bet it would be AWESOME to get stoned with Willy Nelson. favorite song; "Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground".
When he first hit big for me in Austin early seventies, he seemed kinda old now all the folks around that time are pretty much gone and Willie is still Trucking, man's amazing.
I love these stories. Love so many of Willie Nelson songs, but I think my favorites are “If You Can Touch Her at All”, “Me and Paul” and “Yesterday’s Wine”.
The best show I have ever seen a d will ever see was Willie at the Murat. I lucked into front row seats (about two off of dead center) and the whole thing was brilliant. He was touring for the Spirit album, which is still one of my favorites, and played pretty much the whole thing. Also Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's, was there. No joke. A few years later, I was him at the Vogue and briefly met Paul English, the only band member I ever got to meet. He signed my copy of Red Headed Stranger. That brief interaction may be why Me and Paul is still, for my money, Willie's best. Too Sick To Pray is way up there as well.
I don't know if it was Austin City Limits or SNL, but I had a jaw dropper watching Willie take a solo on "trigger" during one of his standards. I can't even remember what song it was. He walked it right out to the edge of cliff, teetered for a second, then wound up the solo like a kid running into his mother's arms. It was like staring into infinity.
I have a few experiences back stage and on the bus with Willie and the family. I remember about being told about Bee's passing and what a great guy he was. You need to interview B.R., he has some great stories.
Great feature OTIS. I think if i had Willie's attention in that situation, i would just ask What was it like for you and Merle Haggard to work and record together? I relate to the sheer bewilderment this guy expresses when confronted with one of your heroes. I would be tongue tied just wanting to absorb his Buddha like vibe. Although i dont know a lot of Willie's catalogue, i love tunes like Nothing i can do about it now ( a song that takes on greater meaning for me every day)
Great story, Otis and Tim. As Mojo calls him, the Hillbilly Dalai Lama. Willie's guitar playing always blows me away. He never gets the credit he deserves for that.
Favorite Wille song? Hard to pick but I've got a special place in me for Shotgun Willie. My brothers and I were on a road trip with our Dad when that album first came out and that song was playing on the radio quite a bit and of course the lyrics about some crazy dude sitting around in his underwear biting on a bullet had us rolling around with laughter and I never forgot it.
Ya, that would be a mind bender, what do you say to Willie? Guess it would have to be just about the weather & such, I'd have no over frame of reference. He has literally sat with Kings, played with EVERYONE, hob nobed with "enter the name of any president & prime minister in the last 40 years". Still, wouldn't it be wild to pull out a deck of cards and play a few hands of poker with red haired stranger. 👍
I don’t really “dream” about getting high with anyone, but Willie Nelson and George Clinton are definitely people I’d love to smoke a few joints with and talk about music and life
Got high with Willie many times. Now though with his one lung acting up he only does edibles and cannot smoke anymore to save his remaining lung. Willie did like that Hawaiian though. Ask Willie about the time he smoked Snoop Dog under the table, he tells it hilariously well.
I tell ya people if you have not seen it its the "shit" go to willie's youtube and watch Whiskey River (Live From Austin City Limits, 1981) the eh-fing greatest.
theres only 3 people i would have a hard time turning down that opportunity.... willy cheach and chong and snoop dog... well that's like 4 but close enough....
What's your favorite Willie Nelson song?
Me and Paul! Besides being a great song, I love the way it slowly builds and all the players on the recording play exactly what the track needed and don't throw in anything extra just to show off.

I can’t narrow it down to one. Here are a few favorites. Red Headed Stranger, Sad Songs And Waltzes, Mr. Record Man, and One Day At A Time.
Devil in a Sleeping Bag

Damn that’s awesome.
Wonderful story. I learned Willys number one rule is Don't be an asshole. I love that man!! And his sons are good men too.
Sounds like a gloriously wonderful experience. I’d love to hang with Willie for an hour. Feel the same way about a lot of folks. Including you Otis. love the way he does "san antonio rose"
I love Willie! I was discussing his playing with a buddy tonight, as we listened to Django Reinhardt. He is a huge influence on his tone and phrasing. Great stories, Otis!
I love Willie love damn 😍 his music back in my in 80 and 90 I lived in the country and just played his music loud
Right On , Willie is a killer guitar player . I rarely hear about his playing. It always leaves me thinking what people missing. It's so masterful.
Thanks Otis another day I learnt something new
Love his cover of Leon Russells' "A Song For You"
Oh yes! That’s a beautiful song and he does a lovely rendition.
I read the title and couldn't get here fast enough, haha. Thanks again, awesome as always.
Great stories! God bless old Willie.
My favorite Willie Nelson song is "I'm Falling in Love Again " from Phases & Stages, with Johnny Gimble playing the *sweetest* part on that five-string fiddle.
You were always on my mind
"Sister's Coming Home" is my favorite Willie song lately. I go through phases. Or Phases and Stages.
When you are at the top of hill you don't have to show off and in my mind Willie has been at the top of the hill for at least the last 50 years. Love your stories, grew up in
Brownsburg, been out in Colorado since 2000 though.
Hands on the Wheel!
Love Willie!
Great episode.
Impossible to have one favorite Willie song. I personally love everything he has ever done. Original or covers .
Love these Willie vids . Keep em coming! 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Crazy.
I don't get stoned now but I used to. and I bet it would be AWESOME to get stoned with Willy Nelson.
favorite song;
"Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground".
Singer, songwriter, guitarist, actor, humanitarian… LEGEND
Favorite song? That's tough but I'll go with Whiskey River from Shotgun Willie. Love the groove.
Thanks Otis, angles flying to close to the ground.
When he first hit big for me in Austin early seventies, he seemed kinda old now all the folks around that time are pretty much gone and Willie is still Trucking, man's amazing.

I don't think there's a stoner alive that's not a little jealous because every stoner has getting lifted with Willie on their bucket list.
Great episode Otis!
Angel flying too close to the ground!🤠
Man of my own hart
I don't know if it was Austin City Limits or SNL, but I had a jaw dropper watching Willie take a solo on "trigger" during one of his standards. I can't even remember what song it was. Needs to buy a new guitar.
@@toddgittins5692 I know what you're saying, but truth be told, Trigger is worth infinitely more than any new guitar you could put in his hands.
I have a few experiences back stage and on the bus with Willie and the family. I remember about being told about Bee's passing and what a great guy he was. You need to interview B.R., he has some great stories.
Good Times.
Whiskey River is my favorite Willie song even though he did not write it.
Sad Songs and Waltzes / Me and Paul.
Excellent choices, Davy! : )
That's called the Willie walk....If you're able to keep up.
Blue Eyes Cryin in the Rain and Crazy
Crazy and blue eyes crying just to name a few. Down through the years I have saw many shows. But sadly I never made it to a Willie show.
I aways wanted to here thing's like this about him
Great feature OTIS. I think if i had Willie's attention in that situation, i would just ask What was it like for you and Merle Haggard to work and record together? I relate to the sheer bewilderment this guy expresses when confronted with one of your heroes. I would be tongue tied just wanting to absorb his Buddha like vibe. I can't pick just one song . That is a tough one .
While playing poker with Willie might be fun, one would probably leave the table with less money than they sat down with. Same way with dominos
You are most likely correct, add the diminished mental focus I'd have if I vaped with him 😉 Still - man what a porch story that would be
I don’t really “dream” about getting high with anyone, but Willie Nelson and George Clinton are definitely people I’d love to smoke a few joints with and talk about music and life
🤙
I’d like to meet Willie Nelson. But I’d LOVE to meet Trigger! 😂
Got high with Willie many times. Now though with his one lung acting up he only does edibles and cannot smoke anymore to save his remaining lung. Willie did like that Hawaiian though. Ask Willie about the time he smoked Snoop Dog under the table, he tells it hilariously well.
“I didn’t wanna pay him for the weed because he was, well off. Right??”
I never could figure out if Willie owned the IRS or if the IRS owned Willie.
Is he related to Jim Carrol? (Basketball diaries) Looks just like him.
Whiskey River.
"Whatever you do, I'll still be your friend... But, "I'll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again!"
Same Song... Different Decade!
Angels flying too close to the ground
Here's a video of Tim telling a really fun Waylon Jennings story. ruclips.net/video/9HzTCIvXMug/видео.html
🔥🌲✌️😎
I tell ya people if you have not seen it its the "shit" go to willie's youtube and watch Whiskey River (Live From Austin City Limits, 1981) the eh-fing greatest.
I would have saved that quarterbag and a smoke like a hit off it every year till I die
Poncho & Lefty
There’s Nothing I can do About it Now/Too Sick To Pray
🎙 🎵 Artist⚜️Willie Nelson🎶 Song💫Something You Get Through 👍
He would be the one to sit down and bullshit with before I croak.
Pancho & Lefty
I too got high w Willie...not really. But that would probably be pretty cool. Drank a beer w Sheryl crow at a Tom petty concert.
That's a good thing right?
I don't know about Willie knowing all the presidents and kings but I'm pretty sure he knows all the famous and not famous Rastafarians.
theres only 3 people i would have a hard time turning down that opportunity.... willy cheach and chong and snoop dog... well that's like 4 but close enough....
He don’t look like the kinda guy who’d enjoy the wacky tobacky!
B spears
NO ! NOT WILLIE ! 🤫🤭🥴
