      @hammer1349 Год назад +31

      I find it quite interesting how Elias is just cutthroat and straight to the point about who will and won't make it. Admittedly I've not watched the episode but I'm curious to see what he means by quit, whether it would be quitting the class or leaving the college altogether. In the end though atleast he is being honest about the dangers and forthcoming about protecting his students, if a little blunt about it. Also nice to see him fall back on Chise when handling the salamander

      @alblgz that would explain why he is being blunt about it and not it isn't stirring up too much fuss. I'm interested to see the differences between magic and sorcery as I've just started watching the first season

    • @Aurilion44
      @Aurilion44 Год назад +25

      @@hammer1349 Yep, it's quite an interesting distinction. Sorcerers are pretty much like magic users from Fate or alchemists. They produce mana themselves (magic cores inside), use it on spells that usually just bend laws of reality, and are more of scientists and researchers while sorcery is just another branch of science.
      Mages/Magi on the other hand are more akin to old-school wizards, druids, shamans or oracles. They use and weave magic from outside sources (like latent mana) and commonly enter into pacts with fey, mythic creatures, gods, devils, literal forces of nature and other sentient concepts. Their spells are very much intuitive, based on their feelings and they are very, very powerful, but also very fickle and unpredictable. It's very easy for them to lose themselves in them and get crippled or die since those spells usually just straight up break or ignore laws of reality or straight up just shape it into what they want. That is also not taking into consideration accidentally offending forces they make pacts with. Not many are born with aptitude for it, fewer still survive till they can be considered proper magi. That is why Elias is so blunt here.
      Interestingly, magi don't always come off as fully human. Elias is... yeah, but even Chise was noted by more sensitive sorcerers to feel somewhat... off. As if she was some kind of animal or beast in human skin, but not in a negative aspect. So yeah, magi are very much like druids or shamans that are quite a bit closer to fey than humans and are very attuned with nature and supernatural forces that their more logically and scientifically oriented cousins simply can't grasp

    “You’re just a lizard,” is the wrong thing to say to a salamander who can wield fire magic. First, the kid is disrespecting the salamander by saying that. Second, the kid is treating the salamander as a means to an end as it’s only a tool for him to wield magic. Third, it is offensive and provocative to the salamander, the kid never put himself in the salamander’s shoes and how he would feel if someone said something like that to him (if the kid was the salamander). Lastly, since the neighbors wield magic, the people who become magic users will need their help to conduct magic. If there is no mutual understanding or interdependence between the two parties it will be difficult to wield magic at all, among other things.

      This is an optional class for learning how to be a magus (who work with faeries and spirits to cast spells) in a school for sorcerers (who create their own magic). He told them beforehand that not everyone can become a magus because it requires being able to work with the fey.

    I feel it kinda went to fast. I think I only saw 3 hands go up unless I miscounted and Chise probably didn't raise hers but do they really need to give up that fast. With time and patience theirs bound to be some kind spirit/neighbor they can use right? Don't remember a lot of the first season and might missing something

    • @hammer1349
      @hammer1349 Год назад +5

      It's a working relationship, by sides have to be in agreement. Chise has it easy because she is basically the neighbours' Queen bee, they are naturally inclined to serve her. It could be a long time before the appropriate neighbour is found for some of them in which time the rest of the class is either being held back or those who aren't immediately apt are being given knowledge that might put them at great risk if they try again on their. Taking the kid for example, he'd be toast if he tried to do that outside the classroom. I think with the nature of magic, rather than sorcery, if no spirit is willing to work with them then there is no way for them to continue and practice what they are being taught so somewhat just wasting time at that point

    • @etain21918
      @etain21918 Год назад +4

      @@hammer1349 I agree, as you said Chise is their queen bee, but they did try eat her when she first met them due to her magical abilities, so as you say now that she regulates her powers they sort of follow her, hence why Elias gave her the neighbour to calm down before scolding the class, she's already adept to them, technically she doesn't need to be there with Elias at home, but he refused to teach her things and she wanted to do more then be at home with her goat man child husband, who gets jealous of her having friends because he's mentally a child

    Does anyone feel it? That the execution of certain scenes feels less whimsical compared to the first season?
    I get that the director changed and the series is entering a more mature, dark, and serious feel since we're dealing with humans, other organizations at ploy, and Chise's life in more grave trouble, but I feel the "magic" feel is kinda gone and I missed that aspect of the show. It really felt like it popped out of a fairytale and there's less of a magical feel since its all getting a "calculative" look if you understand what I mean.

    • @hammer1349
      @hammer1349 Год назад +1

      Such is the nature of school. Its an inherently controlled environment by nature of what it is. The first season felt magical because we were learning first hand alongside Chise about what spirits did what and how likely they were to be a help/hinderence. The feeling of "magic" I suppose could be associated with freedom, the unknown and possibility. In a school environment those are replaced with cause and effect, knowledge and probability. It is not to say that it is not dangerous but we won't be seeing Chise try to go home the way Elias does and instead fly across the ocean as a phoenix because the spirits wanted to.
      Something else to consider is that the neighbours here seemingly aren't wild or in their natural habitat either. They have become acclimatised to a more controlled and regulated environment. They seemingly have allowed themselves to become predictable so they can assist teachers in training new mages. Given that a constant theme in the first season is that mages are a dying breed, I imagine they had some stakes in the game themselves so were likely more willing to lend their assistance. Elias probably made it clear to them what their role and purpose was beforehand

    • @alblgz
      @alblgz Год назад +1

      @@hammer1349 Ehm, no. The College doesn't train "magi" (mahoutsukai) who use spirits, it's for training "sorcerers" (majutsushi) who use their own power and/or tools. It's just an introductory elective about mahou lead by Elias as a guest teacher. So the spirits are those who just happen to be there at the moment (probably attracted by Chise's magic force).

    • @alblgz
      @alblgz Год назад +2

      Again, that's the difference between "magic" and "sorcery" in the setting. Magic is about using "neighbours" by making contracts with them, sorcery is about using the laws of magic, so it's more engineered approach.
