Currently going through my first ever DnD campaign as a barbarian
He's a Goliath who, despite being classed as a barbarian, is an ex centurion of an imperial army. And he do wear armour, though it's only for cosmetics.
And he has as of two sessions ago a greatsword made from the remains of a slain dragon god after he stabbed it in the eye.
And he can wield it with one hand.
He might sound overpowered but he isn't, the most powerful player in the party is our Tiefling Warlock.
Barbarians are really fun. And it was the DM's (who is a dear friend of mine) idea for me to play as a Barbarian for my first character.

Level 3. This means sub classes. Barbarians have two primal paths. The first is path of the berserker. Here’s a basic idea to get your inspiration juices flowing. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Edit: I probably should have mentioned this. But before someone points this out. This comment was stolen from the How to play Barbarian video by XP to level 3. Go check them out if you haven’t. They are really funny.

Dont underestimate how hard to kill a Barb with Shield and Shield Master feat is. In Rage you have advantage on the shove to knockback or knock a creature prone(Giving you and other allies advantage for attacks) and you add the shield bonus to dex save with danger sense that are with advantage now and can use your reaction to take no damage instead of half damage.

Favorite story about a barbarian was one who couldn't trigger her rage manually but instead it was triggered upon seeing circular things. Plates got smashed, wheels got crumped... Eventually the bard started manually triggering her rages as needed by telling her to stare at his buckler then backing away hastily.
Then we all got attacked in the middle of the night by a band of hired assassins, surprised on all fronts, two people got knocked unconscious and were making death rolls before they'd gotten their turn, another got hit by a banish spell, only Barbarian was still active, and things were looking like bleak.
    ..... Then the clouds parted.

RAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!!!! I'm currently playing a barBEARian right now, so seeing this made me quite happy. As my name suggest I have an affinity for tanking, and the bear totem barbarian was right a perfect fit for me. It's so much fun using the shield master fear to knock things prone so I can set things up for the rogue while still having the option to do decent damage, and take a hit when needed. Also coming up with creative ways to use my muscle in social situations keeps me on my toes, and let's not forget the 🐻 puns........I can't be the only one that uses them......can I?

Matsudiro Lol I might be stepping on the Druids toes if I did that. It is really tempting though. Bjorn is rather obsessed with bears so maybe in the future. I asked the DM if the party and myself can track and hunt down an old and powerful bear since we hit lvl 3. He agreed and came up with a concept of accepting the bear's spirit into myself so it can see the world, and I can become one with my spirit animal.

    Heh. I like this vid.
I will admit, I don't see Berserker enough at the tables where I'm at (we're a big group with multiple tables). Usually when somebody here takes Barbarian, they go Totem Warrior and immediately choose the Bear Totem... and yet the way they play suggests they SHOULD be Berserkers. None of them even bother remembering what else a Totem Warrior can do, alas. They take the Totem for the defense option, and that's it. ... I really want to see a Pure Eagle Barbarian. I mean, leaping Rage Beast once the epic tier is hit. XD
I mean, Speak with Animals, Beast Sense, both as Rituals. Be Dar the Beastmaster from that series. Be Minsc if he was a Barbarian instead of a Ranger. Have your own little "space hamster" buddy and all of that. I just... wish the players at my table realized that with a Totem Warrior, there's more to a Barbarian than rage and attack. Rage and Attack is the bread and butter of the Berserker. Be Berserker if they really want to go all out with that playstyle. XD

Berserker sadly sucks primarily for the Frenzy drawback.
Yes, gaining an extra attack as a bonus action is good, but Exhaustion is terrible, and you can only recover 1 level of Exhaustion per long rest. So if you’re in a dungeon with traps and enemies everywhere, can’t exactly take a super long rest.
I’d fix it like this: when your rage ends, you instead take 1d12 Necrotic Damage. It fits the whole recklessness of the Barbarian, choosing offense over defense and just one long rest can heal you instantly

  • @FlyingDominion
    @FlyingDominion 6 лет назад +1

My favorite multiclass combination is barbarian/wild sorcerer. My plan is to charge in and explode (via wild surge). My high hp helps keep me up in case I roll something like a self centered fireball on the wild surge table (which is my plan).
I took barbarian at 1st level for higher hp. I don't usually rage until I'm low on spells, since my go to spell is shield. I also use tides of chaos to get advantage in attacks and allow my (happily obliging) DM to have me roll more on the wild surge table.
With this build there are only 3 "bad" results on the wild surge table: fear, potted plant, and polymorph. This is such a fun character.

A good multiclass of this would be at least 2 levels of barbarian then champion fighter for the rest
Because you only need rage, unarmored defense and reckless attack
    Maybe danger sense too
For the rest is champion fighter since you can still get 6 ASI
    3 extra attacks
    2 action surges
    3 indomitables
2 fighting styles(would recommend 2 of dueling, great weapon fighting and two weapon fighting)
15 percent chance of crits( since the natural crit is only 20 normally so its 1/20, or 5 percent. 20 or 19 means 2 outcomes to count as critical, so 2/20 or 1/10, or aka 10 percent. Then with crits at 20, 19 and 18, means 3 outcomes, 3/20 or 15 percent)
Then you also have remarkable athlete in case you want to add extra pb boost to other physical ability checks that dont already use your pb
Mostly dex checks like stealth or acrobatics
Then ofc the final champion feature of getting heal ovetime if your hp is below half but not at 0
    So add it all together
Rage, plus reckless attack for advantage in all your attacks, plus 3 attacks with fighter's 2 extra attacks, then action surge
    With 15 percent crit chance
Results in just complete frontline, brute force massacre

So I'm playing a half orc barbarian, which has the racial trait savage attacks, which says that on a crit I use an extra damage dice for my damage roll. So a max level half orc barbarian scoring a crit roll would use 4 bonus die plus 2 regular crit die, so a total of six attack dice... that's balanced

I just happened to have made a new barbarian that will later on get into training from a fighter so this barbarian can get more refined physical supremacy
After 2 levels of barbarian this character will as i said above
    Take some intense fighter training
Very heavily inspired from Chiya of Urara Meirochou, only my character will be a brute, not a diviner lol
Chiya was a wild child for all her life growing up in the mountains
Once she turns 15 she can go into this town called meirochou
A town full of dedicated diviners and apprentice diviners with their own preferred divination styles
    These diviners are called urara
They say that once you turn 15 you can enter this place and apply for urara training
There are more to it so i suggest taking this series a look
Its super cute, funny, light hearted, slice of life and just so full of sweetness it makes your heart flutter and your face ache from smiling how adorable this all gets

      @DontStopThinking  7 лет назад +1

Yes, I am aware of the confusion, but I am going with Jeremy Crawford's Sage Advice. He says that unarmed strike is not a weapon, but weapon attack is a process. Rage works with the melee weapon attack process, so it is applicable. I think that the designers would have intended barbarians get that bonus with their unarmed strike anyway.

Great work, Carlos! I don't know what sort or character concept you are going for with your Barbarian, but here is something I picked out of ether. "Conk Doorbane" you started breaking doors as hobby and you ended up getting hired by adventurers because you're really good with it. Your greataxe was a piece of fire giant fortress door that you picked up when your tribe raided the fire giant stronghold.
Usually I like to keep barbarian's name functional and simple to understand. It causes less confusion among your kin this way. But really, one syllable name and what you do usually makes great barbarian names.
If you have your own concept, just try that pattern.

At 3:15 he states: "The unarmed attack, despite its name, is classified as a melee weapon attack, so Barbarians also get to apply the bonus [rage] damage."
Im confused because the players handbook seems to contradict this. The 'Melee Attacks' section on page 195 reads: "Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons)."
If none of those count as weapons, how can an unarmed strike be classified as a melee 'weapon' attack?

also mentioning that totem barbarians can learn to fly true the eagle totem could have been a fun mention :)

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  6 лет назад

Actually, I can tell you right now. The cheapest way is to just buy the starter kit. It's got all the materials you need for a level 1 - 4 adventure with the 4 basic classes. If you want more options, then you can buy the player's handbook to go with it. Amazon seems to always have a good deal for those. It would last you quite a bit until you think you are ready for larger campaigns.

I realize this is old, but I had the same brief thought and looked into it.
      Warforged Resilience
You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits.
You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
      You are immune to disease.
You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
You don’t need to sleep and don’t suffer the effects of exhaustion due to lack of rest, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
That last one there, you don't suffer exhaustion from not sleeping. You would definitely still suffer from exhaustion from the Barbarian abilities.

I think it would be cool to have a barbarian that is patient and emphasizes their high Con and Low Cha by being a disgusting in the eyes of others and enduring in the sense of exhaustion (going without food or sleep for days, starved but strong) rather than being hearty.

hello, noob question here, I'm starting to play after a small 18 years break. I'm creating a half orc barbarian wielding a great axe, my str modifier is +3. I just want to make sure I got it correctly, If I go into rage and crit I would do 1d12 normal weapon damage + 1d12 critical damage + 1d12 from Savage attacks + 3 str modifier +2 rage bonus damage, so that would be 3d12+5? That seems a bit too OP for a level 1 character, it's an average of 26 with a max damage of 41.

  • @Xion_Toshiro

"Un-Armored, does NOT mean naked..." - this makes me want to make a Barbarian, who's as Historically accurate as possible, based on the Neolithic Era of Humans...
Who runs around; slaying Monsters, in the buff, while songs like Irrational Exuberance ~ Yatta, or Ikouze Paradise, or something melodic metal sounding
This was inspired by Pikuru; from Baki
But said Barbarian is as dumb as a sack of hammers, incredibly superstitious, illiterate, & can't speak properly, due to being raised as a feral child
Also, carries a Book - that, while
My Barbarian can't read, believes there's a mythical Monster out there: called "The Saurus" - believed to be, the ultimate Dinosaur, because the book is a thesaurus
In 2nd Edition AD&D (when it was called Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) - Complete Barbarian's Handbook, I think, by Mongoose Publishing - that goes DEEP into D&D Classes, like Barbarian - not Features & a few ideas, oh no - I mean like full on iceberg lore deep
Ways that Barbarians trade, communicate through sign & body language, get antsy around Magic Users, see metal as alien, would see a Sword in the ground, during a lightning strike as an omen or sign of greatness, how they would watch the Wizard in the Party - with a hawk like gaze, or call it Book Magic, or would duck & cover, flip out, or pray forgiveness - if they see Magic being used...
Definitely a far cry from the archetypal Barbarian - all grim & stoic - like Conan
But change, is part of Character growth. This Barbarian Character I'd make, would change - going from savage to civil, over time - originally acting like an apex predator, to fighting more like a person - but still maintains that feral instinct & predatory behavior - while also being protective of allies & friends - due to a sort of pack mentality
Essentially; a Barbarian, that's part Humanoid Warrior, part feral animal in nature - like Pikuru, from Baki
