Back in the eighties we found a really huge pike floating on the Thames. She'd been hit by a propeller and was still alive but there was no hope for her as the wounds were terrible and had clearly cut through her spine. She weighed 37lb and is still the biggest pike I've ever seen. We had no choice but to put her to sleep as we couldn't just leave her to a lingering death. We're all still gutted about that 40+ years later. Pike can certainly survive some bad injuries and I've caught pike over the years that have clearly survived serious flesh injuries. But sadly that big girl was paralysed and there was only one option. Absolutely heartbreaking as a lifelong pike angler.😢

Pike are very resilient when it comes to infections. No primary organs actually ruptured. Sutures would have definitely done the job.
True pike fishers need forceps, mat, net all the gear. Specialised fishing...

I walk the dog daily on that stretch and it gets hammered winter and summer …. some of the Pike care is horrific … anglers who have perhaps never caught Pike before and amount of anglers without the basics ie forceps / wire cutters / landing mat / correct net etc such shame

I dont know what it is about perch but very few people seem to target big perch my theory on is they like bream to carp anglers no one want go catch them when they're sliver fishing and as such no one targets them

Even though still alive and eating, I think it would be dead before must longer. I think I would have killed it and would have removed it. Sad to see it. 😒 I can understand making the decision though, not wanting the pike dead. That said, you're a great fisherman, and hope you have a great one in 2025. Happy New Year Adam.

I don't want to be that guy, but you need a trace on that smaller lure - afw surflon 7x7 is supple enough to not affect lure action.
