If my son had made this album, I'd say this:
"This is a strong debut, son. Strong debut."
What do you think of this LP? Love it? Hate it? Why?
7/10

It's such a shame these guys broke up, this one of my favorite albums ever and it's absolutely incredible that an ATL garage band produced it. Not a single bad song on it, it's completely enjoyable all the way through. I just want more, but it really seems like it's not gonna happen. So sad i didn't find out about them in time to buy the vinyl
Saw them play in LA last month
@@gnarcotics_ lol really? are they back together?
Manuel H. Idk what they’re up to tbh. Their Instagram is @balkansbalkansbalkans
@@gnarcotics_ thank you!
Still listening to this album in 2019. Masterpiece
2020 GANG
yes
yee
It’s such an underrated, hidden gem. Fucking explosive, beautifully written, complex, visceral album.
Michael Luciano 2020 yes
Can't believe I'm finding this band 8 years after the fact and they still sound ahead of their time. WTF Balkans plz come back!
damn, these guys were great. this is one of those bands that will be forgotten and then emerge on some nuggets-esque piece for the 00s and a bunch of future hipsters will be clamoring for their nuts. RIP
You were fucking right
They have a documentary coming out 👀
@@current3109 we’re here for the same reason
Yep
Exactly yes
You say Balkans forever... But sadly the Blakans have been no more for over a year now. I love every one of those beautiful characters. Frankie Broyles...
I'm so glad you got me introduced to this album!
I'm relistening to it for the first time in a while. And it has totally grown on me. Sadly the band is no more, and it tears me apart :(
FREE CAL
@TacticOgre I did say what was keeping me from falling in love with the album, didn't I. I'm pretty sure I said these guys drown in their influences a bit. I love the songs, but the sound kinda leaves me hanging here and there. There are a few tracks I'm not a huge fan of either, but whatevs. The scores don't even really matter. There's a link to this album in the DBOX. Did you listen to it? Do you like it? :-)
Such an underrated band with a unique sound i love it
Wow, liking the sound of this. The bass counterpoints the guitars so nicely. Cheers for the heads up.
I loved "Flowers Everywhere" and "Violent Girls."
FREE CAL
I really love it when you review things I've never heard of and end up liking it. You're my favorite Anthony! Death to CAL. so on and so on. And as always review whatever.
This band will make you bounce.
"Anthony Fantano. Internet's busiest music pleb."
Pissed they didn't continue
Frankie Broyles released his own LP "Slow Return" and continued his Balkans-esque guitar work for the band OMNI
I have not stopped playing this since I got it. Like you said, not a bad track on there. I feel like I've been transported to the early 00's. FANTASTIC! Love it so hard it hurts.
9/10 for me.
The singing/voice for the Balkans really remind me of the 90's Seattle band Love Battery especially on songs like Out of Focus.
I think if a band's sound is "influenced" by another band's sound, then half the time it may be intentional, while other times I think that it just happens to sound like that band-not every band plans to sound like someone else, but the Balkans have a good thing going, and I hope they continue to make good songs.
FREE CAL! FREE CAL!
Loved this album for ages, but had no idea anthony reviewed it (and seemingly enjoyed it).
@quiettheeffort yep
Bobby Jo Valentine - A Place to Belong. Great review. Never heard of the Balkans before. Coolness.
Frankie Broyles plays guitar for deerhunter now
its a tragedy it took the spotify algorithm for this gem to get popular
Dead Skeletons - "Dead Magick"
The stram can be heard at Apollo Audio.
considering that you missed reviewing Jeniferever's "Silesia" last month, i really hope you review The Dear Hunter's "The Color Spectrum" in June.
Balkans album is great. Even though they're clearly influenced by The Strokes-deranged guitars, sound careless but passionate singing.
They still have a lot of beautiful melodies that are unique and very exciting.
When I heard their record I couldn't believe that almost every song was good.
Unfortunately, they're not active at the moment and are put on hold.
I would wish them to get back asap and reach their full potential.
I don't know if many know but in 2006 where was a band called Sound Team that had an album Movie Monster where pretty much every song was amazing.
But they disbanded and never became big and that's pretty sad.
Balkans remembers me that I could be hearing another post-punk/garage revival band, or better! Listening to a non-revival post-punk/garage band!
What you should review next? The Boris albums when they show up. That will be another DOUBLE FEATURE OF FAIL
and by the way. I really like the album. Troubled And Done is one of my fav songs at the moment
Anthony, I'm really interested in buying this album. But I can't seem to find it anywhere. Where do you buy it? (I'm anti- iTunes). Maybe you could do a section that can tell where you can find the album.
You should definitely check out Obits, if you haven't already. They put out two albums so far, last one (Moody, Standard And Poor) was released in March (I think) of this year, and the debut in 2009. Also, Free Cal.
very happy you turned me onto this. Thank you, sir!
"Punks at Prom" very nice ;-)
so what is the outtro song in his vids called
Hey Anthony, I need some new glasses frames and I like yours. Where'd ya find 'em?
Why does Fugazi's Repeater album always shows in the corner?
I know this will never be answered, but ... does anyone have this album for download ?
Balkans was my 2nd most listened to artist of 2023. I love this band and more people need to listen to them.
My favourite debut LP so far this year is definitely Former Thieves record, The Language That We Speak.
I don't how this band didn't blow up to the same level as deerhunter. The music is so great. Balkans and Smoke are my 2 favorite atlanta bands
Can you review the new Bon Iver LP? I'd really like to hear what you think about it.

@JohnsHouseofFun 1! 2! 3!
What if he did the Self-Produced Sneakers EP by the Flamin' Groovies. I mean, it is a 70s review, but...they at times sound like a cross between a Country Rock and a Twee Jangle type Pop band.
Damn the review! Free Cal!
