- The year 1996 belonged to the aliens. First they demolished our planet in the kitchy sci-fi flick 'Independence Day' and they went for another round in 'Mars Attacks!'. Both films received a mixed reaction from the critics and only 'Independence Day' was a hit with audiences worldwide.
Looking back I'll say 'Mars Attacks!' was by far the better picture. The film was loaded with the most famous stars and was surprisingly mean-spirited to beat. The majority of the cast, even the most acclaimed, don't make it to the end credits alive. And for some reason it's pretty refreshing to see actors like Jack Nicholson, Michael J. Fox, Pierce Brosnan and Glenn Close killed in various ways by a bunch of green men from outer space.
'Mars Attacks!' owes much of its success to the retro vibe, recalling the science-fiction films from the fifties and sixties. Danny Elfman's use of the theremin in the music and Tim Burton's surreal visuals only add to the effect.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the original trading card series. These cards gave a graphic account of an alien invasion from the planet Mars and provided the inspiration for Tim Burton's movie.

Those giant bugs probably explode at the sound of yodelling too hahaha. I don't know what you mean by cards but I only saw this film on TV for the first time about a month ago(I don't live under a rock =P) I just missed out seeing it a long time ago.
So glad I've seen it though, it's a classic, I think it's just completely brilliant when Tim Burton and Danny Elfman team up, the first two Batman films are my favourite.
I hope they keep making films together.

me too. Tim burton and Danny Elfman are pretty good directors. I prefer it when Burton makes live action movies to be honest. Not a big fan of his art direction in the stop motion movies, though they are pretty good in their own right.

what if they just sent giant bugs our way? Like they did in the cards, but they couldnt do in the movie? It would give us an incentive for the counter attack, another card scene not used. I feel like this movie only adapted the first half of the story. they have to finish it!
