    EDIT: So I got a bill in March for the equivalent of $335 and was pleasantly surprised as it was much lower than expected. Turns out that was actually the bill from the fire alarm company for activation of the alarm (wtf). Then I got another bill in June for $620 which was the actual fire truck & staff costs. The total comes up to $955! Moral of the story, don't do anything that could remotely trigger smoke detectors in public buildings and don't spent money on stupidly designed toys. The Mixie could easily have worked with a fine mist vaporiser which is only water. Using fog juice that can set off particle alarms seems like overkill and results in situations like this!
    I wanted to find out how Magic Mixies work and it ended up being the most chaotic video I've ever made. I did end up learning a lot about how to make fog though. I always thought fake mist was made from dry ice but realised there are multiple methods. The most common one is actually with glycerin, and this is the one you will see in clubs, events or haunted houses. It has a very distinct smell which is caused by particles of glycerin burning inside the machine. The result is denser than mist made purely from water (although I think both look extremely similar from the comparison in the video). The "magic" fog obviously set off the smoke alarm in my office and I'm now waiting for the bill. My final thought on Magic Mixies is that I wasn't as blown away as many of the review on RUclips. The first reveal is amazing but each one after that is the same. It comes with a pink box that lets you reveal small items of your choice but the novelty wears off fairly quickly.

    As someone who works in the Haunted House industry in the US...I can tell you for sure that MOST 'smoke detectors' ACTUALLY just detect particulates in the air. Not just ones that come in smoke. Having STANDARD fire systems in a haunted house, and using fog, guarantees you will set off your fire system several times in a season. Even several times a NIGHT on a good night where the fog builds up thick. HEAT sensors are far more recommended for that particular field because of the particulates in fog from fog juice and fog machines. They're also more expensive. But worth it to not have to evacuate the entire building any time the smoke detectors set off the fire alarms due to fog.

    The fact that you have to pay the fire dept is unbelievable. I would also get an electrician out about that alarm. We had a grease fire in our house a few years ago and the alarm was dead. Everyone else was outside and I was asleep, if I hadn't woken up I would have been seriously hurt from smoke inhalation. Our alarms are checked on the regular now.

    • @maqaroon

      I got really unlucky because I think the "false alarm" penalty rule is for people who secretly try to smoke or do something else that is potentially dangerous. In my case I was just going about my business but once the fog came out of the toy it was impossible to reverse the situation. I'm guessing because they have the alarm that alerts the fire dept right away it's less crucial whether it rings or not. The firemen arrived within 5-10mins of the detector going off.

    • @maqaroon

      Yep that was a really unfortunately combination of events. The "warning" in the instructions was on the last page of an extremely long pamphlet so it's reasonable to assume that most people could miss it. And even if it sets off an alarm, most people don't have devices connected to the fire station so I was really unlucky

    Oh my gosh! Nerdy crafter just did a video with this toy but she was at home. Wow the smoke is does not see, that much, but I guess it’s enough to trip an alarm! What we do for the love of crafting.

    Atomizers are so cool, it makes me wonder why they didn’t just put two inside the pot somewhere to achieve the same effect but no heat required. Dunno if that would have raised the price of the toy or not, either way it just doesn’t seem worth it 😫

    • @maqaroon
      @maqaroon  2 года назад +9

      I thought that too! The fog would have no smell and it would work easily with the water you add inside. However it might have been too easy because they wouldn't be able to sell refills if the pot worked with plain water

  • @sarahmallonee

    Omg I'm so sorry this happen. I suggest u inquire with ur building about why u heard no audible alarm and ask them to please cover half the cost since there was no audible alarm sound to alert u know to turn it off before they came and I suggest you find out a way to be sure ur aware if it ever goes off in the future to avoid another bill like this because it is really unfair to have a silent alarm and make u pay when u had no control and there are lots of things that set fire alarms off by mistake. How this helps you and again I'm so sorry.
    P.S. I watched all the ads without skipping to help you with the bill the best I can

    That's strange, should not have to pay for a life saving service. I know without the fire service I wouldn't be alive right now and I'm now aware that I pay for the service through my council tax here in the UK, so strange that you'd have to pay so much for something that you don't have any control over.
