WHO WE ARE
In 2015 we quit our lives in the city to buy bare land in the country and build a timber frame home from scratch with our bare hands, debt-free, with no prior experience. It’s been a wild ride of ups, downs, highs, lows, rain and rainbows, but we haven’t lost sight of our goals and have gotten further in three years than we thought we’d get in ten. Join us as we build our house, develop our rural property, practice traditional skills such as gardening and food preservation and go to even greater heights (literally) of exploring the world through aviation as a new private pilot!

This was one of the most educational videos on both mill types. This was very much appreciated.
I have a swing blade mill and and a Grandberg mill. Anyone with a Grandberg mill would do themselves a huge favor by using a winch that pulls the saw through the cut. They are available from Granberg. It is so much easier on the body, and it results in a more consistent and smooth cut.
Jesse, A few days ago I dared ,for the first time , to be slightly critical on your cabinet project. Well the Canadian viewer let me have it!
That said, of all your endeavors this milling is by far the most impressive and credible undertaking. Stop calling yourself the homeowner. You guys are the independent sawmill experts. Well Done.
To my knowledge chainsaw chains are 1/4 inch not 1/2 inch
I think it be great if you arrange another Timber Frame Workshop so you can build a separate work shop to do lots of projects in 👍
FYI...the term is a sawyer, not a "saw miller".
Yada yada yada.....
I think most of us who have a mill have started with a chainsaw mill or just milled freehand with a chainsaw lol. Ya that's me 17 years ago milling walnut freehand with a chainsaw. I'm not going to say it was smart but I got er done by golly. Lol. A sawmill is a symbol of freedom to me. Since I bought mine I haven't yet had to go out and get a J.O.B. is it easy? Heck no!!! Its hard work and starting out is extreamly scary financially.
Even after I bought a bandsaw mill I've found in my niche I still need a chainsaw mill. It's a very affordable way to mill large slabs.
Trail building 101: put debris BELOW the trail.
Probably one of the most informative videos you've done so far!!!!
I kept waiting for something to be done but got schooled on chainsaws, chainsaw mills, and band saws. Tap tap tap to fast forward
K P That's what can happen if you have the attention span of a squirrel. 🤪
Have followed you for years since new, and you have done an EXCELLENT JOB in this video/ summary/ conclusions, and recommendations. GREAT JOB, and enjoyable, too.
Also need to look at how large are the trees you need to mill as there are still areas that grow trees that would never fit on the mills deck. You also have the question of what was the area used for in the past as you can have artifacts left in the trees for the blades to hit like the bullets you ran into from someones target shooting.
is that all you do is talk!!!!!!
You can move logs to the mill with a log arch for your atv. You might also want to mention the Stihl voids your saw's warrantee if the saw is used as a chainsaw mill. I don't know if other saw manufacturers void it also.
Void your warranty, that doesn't make sense! And how would Stihl know.
@@jedidiah5131 ask stihl
Not true
Great info. I have owned two different Wood Mizer mills, but not again. I just ordered a LARGE Granberg mill for 72". I do not know of ANY Band mill that will cut anything over about 3 ft plus maybe a little more. I have access to 4' to 6' diameter logs so need the chain saw mill.
I missed all that part. A recommended saw me watch the struggle in you guys building the concrete base. But I didn't know it was you guys. Until I started watching again when the frame got walled and roofed. I haven't stopped since then.
awesome video. thanks for sharing
One little bit of electrical and called it quits. Procrastinating on the important aspects of finishing the home.
Thanks for the walk through on these different mills!
Will you build a work shed on the grounds for finishing the house?
what ? You asking if he is going to build a shed ? Yes he is. It will not be built so they can finish the house though. I guess english is not your first language maybe
not really interested in hearing jesse talk for 40 mins
Then don't.
@@denisekeeth4595 i didn't. that's why i said not interested
The trees you've been cutting down or using that fell down are you planning to replace them with new trees ?
LOL
FIY.....Trees plant themselves. Have been doing it for millions of years.
This is a great video, however I'm seeing some things that aren't 100% complete. I have a Logosol Chain Saw Mill. Some of the problems you mention with the Alaskan style mill aren't relevant to the Logosol, but then it has it's own issues. And when you talk about the kerf on a chainsaw - they do make thin kerf bars/chains for milling. It's still a lot more than a band, but a lot less than a typical chain.
I too run a Logosol w/ H570etech, and (for reference) measure 3/8x050 (WP30RP chain) at 1/4" KERF. Guessing the 1/2" kerf is 404 chain?
"Which one's best ? Bolth."
Enuf with the tutorials. Build something for the love of Pete.
Thanks for a fair overview of the pros and cons of chainsaw vs bandsaw.
Wonderful Advice Jesse
Should have just drove up with the truck. Heck, the Subie probably could have done it.
Well..
It's confirmed...you've bin stock pilling videos.
You should have at least several inches to a foot of snow...due to the large system that came threw last night.
Though...I would gather your pushing snow around and relaxing a bit with family.
So what?!!
Eric, you are correct! The videos were recorded many weeks /months ago. Viewers should not attempt to make any suggestions or provide advice as the project was completed months ago.
"Going out on a limb" Haha.
Love you guys
20 min. Talk 0 work!!!
Know the grand ergo are popular but having the whole bar eating at the log really slows it down. I’ve been using my 661 to freehand mill using only the bottom tip. Works amazing
Hey Jesse hey Alyssa thank you for the video very educational
Too much talk, hands on more.
Wraglestar has a circular saw mill.
You could watch his videos??
What ever happened to the Case?
still there
Very informative. This is a conversational video, not a doozer video.
Well done Jesse this should clear up any people that are undecided as to which type to get 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

ingenuiitively...? like it.
Great info! Thank you.
Lets turn these videos into a drinking game. Anytime Jesse says "Super" or "Jump back" you have to drink!
How does Jesse get anything done . when he just go on and on?
Ok,,,,,,,to bring you uup to speed
Sawdust is wood just like the tree,,,,right,,,now your problem is to make it back onto a tree ,,,or into lumber again ,,,right ,,,,,,,you need to come up with a glue laminet
Mix the saw dust into it put it in a round tube pack it solid pressure each end much pressure 500 lb per square inch ??? Let set dry & harden now you have a log,,,,,,,board or pole hard board press board , or have it done for sale of sawdust or chip board ,,,,inginnewity barter it done
Excellent video, Jesse!
Excellent video.
Dear Patreons, WAKE UP!!!!!
This is so bad.
great info but they both look like a LOT of work. i can get a service to come to my land and mill logs for $.50/board ft, how do you think that compares to doing it yourself?
how many big logs a day could one person do per day without killing themselves?
thx
I think you all are amazing with all the stuff you do My hat's off to you🤗👏👏👏
Interesting! Thanks.
Matthew cremona, sorry tried to copy and paste, monster home made mill .

Great video learned a lot 👍
First thank you for your service. I know the way you are articulating you where military. Great video and thank you for the info. I am still in debate of which product to use but I will calculate, which will be best for my usage.
Another excellent video....
For all of you that are complaining about the amount of talk that Jesse is doing quit complaining it's his video. As for myself I look and see how long the video is going to be and then I pour a cup of coffee and kick back and enjoy. In fact when the day comes and the house is finished I personally hope there will still be topics that will be shared that are of interest.
Fair enough Larry, personally I like less talk more work but no one forces me to watch.
Mark Ellis, very true indeed. I would like to see more work as well but I guess when Jesse is ready that's when we will see it. I know that he is a lucky man to have a wife that works like Alyssa does. Have a blessed day and a wonderful Christmas.
True enough Larry, agreed on Alyssa and have a blessed day and wonderful Christmas yourself.
what size engine is in that atv? very weak it would seem!
Forgot to put it in 4x4?
👍👍👍👌👍☺️
Loved this comparison - you two (3) are awesome !
I hope you see this it could be someone you know or have known in the past. That's causing the bullying. Just a thought.
Longggggg past that, but that you for the thought.
That`s way i sold my chainsaw mill and bought a bandsawmill. And i am super happy. but sorry no woodmizer.
Do wood-mizer make a soda-stream?
I see today you are selling sawmills why???????
よく口が動くよね 何をするの あきれるね

wow have pasture land in the bush we have the cows are shielded there from the north winds we have here we bought a wood chipper and clean up all the falling branches here or trees that may have died here it this year the utility companies came and clean up where the power line was not very happy with them leaving the gates open 300 head were out on the road was not fun getting them all back in the gate
they did a very bad job with the clean up too the police did charge the power company for that they are very mad about it
we do run the cow back in there too we had to chip it to the plus side they had to pay for us to clean up there mess the judge maked them paid for all of it we did have signs saying close gates afterward cows are president in fields
we clean up the fence line too from trees too did pay off to have it

Awesome! I have been waiting for this video. Thanks for your insight and thoughts!
💕💕👍👍------Love you guys, excellent video.-------👍👍💕💕
Nice
Why is it not a electric motor on the sawmill? More enviroment friendly.
Kinda hard to find an outlet if you process stuff out in the woods...
So a coal fired sawmill is more environmentally friendly than a gas powered? Who knew? Electricity doesn't magically come out of the wall, you know. Wind power only works when the wind is blowing. Solar power only works when the sun is shining. A half mile of extension cords to reach the job site uses a lot of plastic and copper.
@@userunavailable3095 We dont have any coal powerplants here in Sweden. Only waterpower windpower and nuclear.
@@jansoderman8550 Coal is still the most common fuel here.
@@userunavailable3095 And natural gas.
