    The bits where you mumbled that sometimes you don't like making videos and darting about willy-nilly is exactly what happens to me in my videos. It feels like you're pondering for ages when it's just seconds and your mind is always jumping through different scenarios.

  • @SmittySmithsonite
    @SmittySmithsonite 6 лет назад +2

    Didn't think there were any Neons left on this planet! 😁 Nice diag - I love these ones because I have to remind myself CONSTANTLY to slow down, start from the top, and work my way down to the bad part.
    Willy-nilly is how I roll, Eric - don't feel bad. 😂 I'm gonna share an embarrassing and expensive story here that at the risk of looking like a complete buffoon, I probably shouldn't ...
    So I've had my dad's aluminum boat with a '15 Suzuki 20HP FI outboard on it here for a couple months now - my brother ran wide open through a pile of rocks way out in the middle of a huge lake up in ME (unmarked, and with 50' depths everywhere, the last thing you'd expect!). Anyway - he bought a used lower unit off eBay, since it tore the skeg right off the bottom - all I had to do was swap the guts from one to the other. Problem was, there was no center shaft bearing in the eBay unit, so I figured I'd attempt knocking the needle bearing out of the busted one before ordering a new one, and attempt to install it in the eBay unit. So I find a spark plug socket that seemed to fit perfectly, and a couple extensions to reach the bearing, which is all of 10" down inside the unit. Got the bearing out intact! BUT ... my spark plug socket is hopelessly wedged inside. CRAP!! (only that's not what I said at the top of my lungs ...). Rookie mistake right there. But WAIT - it gets worse ... So now I'm all fired up and not thinking at all. I grab the torches, and grab the lower unit - I'm gonna cut this POS in half and get my $6 socket back! So I start cutting. Some pretty thick aluminum on that one - took some time to get through it. I cut right across where the gears & prop mount up from front to back. I break the last bit of it off, peek inside ..... WHERE IS MY F$%#&ing socket??? Guess which lower unit I just cut in half? 😮 😬🤬 😔 YEP! $340 mistake right there over a $6 friggin socket!! What's even worse is, after a couple days to cool off, I grabbed the intact but broken old lower unit with my socket still jammed inside, and instantly had a plan - I took an old 45° tire iron that was about 18" long, stuck it in the vise, heated the pee out of it until I could straighten it, cut the chisel end off, and VOILA - I've got a punch. Grabbed Big Nasty, and with plenty of real estate on the socket end, rammed that socket out of the lower unit in literally half a second!
    Sometimes you gotta slow down to go fast .... 😧
    And sorry to hear about that percentage of idiots on the internet that are making life miserable for you via telephone. I swear, the internet has made me lose faith in humanity ...

    Nice diagnosis Eric. I agree with CYA and take photos of everything I find broken and send it to them or attach it to repair order. Don't know/care who broke it just documenting it. And then there are the ones that don't touch anything see codes and shotgun blast. Had customer of 09 Colorado Z71 P0446, Service 4WD, Service Stabilitrak & Traction Control. GM dealer told him he needs a canister & vent valve $773 & never removed the canister (Bolt rusted in CT car) to determine what was bad & only thing wrong was vent valve. They told customer to take it to a Chevy dealership b/c it had no codes for the other issues when it actually had EBCM U1000 Unidentifiable DTC, & C0327 Encoder & B2725 Active Transfer Case Mode Switch DTCs. Transfer case shift module PCB had water intrusion corroded & shorted it out accounting for all the DTCs. EBCM was getting U1000 from TCSM triggering Stabilitrak & Traction Control messages & warning light. Replaced TCSM and everything fixed for $100 less than original dealer quote...those places are what gives us bad reputation but then again keeps them coming our way :D

The thermostat worked but quite in less than a month. 2003 Dodge. Rented a compression kit because after auto Zone got home pooped hood, had radiator fluid coming out of reservoir. Had the tester in #1. Remove fuel fuses, and ignition fuses. UnHooked up battery. Was ready to start went to turn it over an forgot to place battery terminals back on. Turned the key, same garbage. Except parts of the under the hood fuse area had no power, couldn't keep an see where you were placing the wire into the connectors. I don't think I have power in the PMC. I am counting on you to figure this out. It's her daily work and running around weekend thinking she's 20 again. I had to give up after burping the car for a while and taking everything apart for the humpty Time, screw those car's. But I have to get it up working before she comes back Monday. Only if you could. Low compression. All signs I seen was worn out valves. And piston ring. She getting the Thick 4 cylinder Restore. Know much about tranny's. Mine started to hesitate 3-4 sec to 1st , about 2 sec for second. I need to get her car done. So I can get back to redoing my 1984 Honda Gyro 50nn MD. Scooter. Very good call! More thorough than you may have needed to be, but I'd definitely check every circuit I could think of before calling a PCM too! Excellent diagnosis process demonstration!

      it's a dodge neon, I assumed the ECM was bad to start with, judging by history, no crank and no start. he probably did too, but you still need to confirm it.
      later in video he found the starter relay was slightly moved, so someone probably jumped it to check starter/cranking, the "green zipties" at the ecm connectors, other broken locking tabs and then the air cleaner box and throttle cables!
      I'm left wondering what else is wrong and did they blow the ECM trying to diagnose the vehicle? I see a "large can of worms" being opened up :))

    Hey there Eric.! I. Just want to give you a shout-out and thanks for one of your tips on a seized bolt. I 've work on my suspension and replace the front srtuts on my '06 Nissan pathfinder. In two of the mounting bolt from the (pass) side, was rusted and seized then I stripped the bug'er....
    So I heated the babies up to about 400%F cooled it off with some water. After a third time (BAM!) home sweet home.😀👍

    I may have posted this before but, there are plenty of part replace and pray mechanics. You however seem to be an honest, highly skilled person. Is there a pt 2? I hate the R & P mechanics. They usually only give a five minute five mile warranty!

    I was a supplier engineer who offhandedly toured through the mega-mall turned HQ/engineering center that is now FCA US Headquarters and Tech Center in Auburn Hills in the early 90s. (GE Capital, the leasor, due to Chrysler's still precarious financial condition at the time, required that the massive complex be multi-purpose built, thus an enormous shopping mall layout)
    I saw production prototype Neons being worked on in their multi-bay service centers. I commented that I thought they were cute. Our Chrysler engineering escort rolled their eyes, muttering such phrases as "pieces of $#!7" and "cheap junk".
    Fortunately we supplied nothing on that platform.
