Mark overheard two employees in the store talking about videos that were on MTV and Mark started copying down things the two guys were saying, including how they installed microwave ovens and delivered custom kitchens.

The advent of an entire medium dedicated to the 24/7 showing of music videos rather than rely on the the broadcast TV programs that were composed mostly of sitcoms, and when our drama is back then, had a counter-culture appeal to kids, because their parents hated MTV. So, picture an entire wall of televisions at a big appliance store, one after the other tuned to MTV, so the pictures were all in sync and dominated the entire wall. That tells you that the people who worked at the store were teenagers because no adult would’ve done that. It makes the entire context of this song more satirical and funny. Take it one step further: these teenagers, who moved heavy appliances around and delivered them to people‘s homes for minimum wage, would naturally look with envy at the rock bands on MTV and think that the bands had it easy. And the etymology of the word “faggot” actually originated in America. When the American GI’s came to Great Britain to fight in World War II, they brought that term with them. They referred to cigarettes as “fags.” The British picked up the term, and it was transmuted to mean people who weren’t straight. Slang is very contextual and morphs over time, especially when it is translated into the language of different cultures. So the word “faggot” has not always had the derogatory meaning that we give it now.

They are small-minded and don't understand how tough it is to make it to the top, and their use of "that word" only emphasizes their limited view of the world. The workers may be using the word in an offensive manner, but that doesn't make the song offensive. Dire Straits never meant to insult or offend anybody. You can hear their voices dripping sarcasm. I can't speak for the entire LGBTQ+ community, but this song never offended me or any other gay person I know. We understand the difference between when we're being slurred, and when the word is being used to portray a character in a bad light.
As a gay man who also grew up in this era, you are absolutely right. Society has now deteriorated to such a point that if you hear any word like this you are 'obliged' to be outraged and offended. So as others have pointed out, this is Sting doing the "I want my MTV" part. This is because the Police did an ad for MTV where they said that very line. On top of that the music used for "I want my MTV" section is actually borrowed from the Police's "Don't stand so close to me" written by Sting... because of this Sting gets credit as co-writer of the music. Apparently Dire Straits was in Monserrat recording the album and Mark said something like "You know it would be great to have Sting on this" and someone in the Studio said (again something like)... "Oh, he's on holiday surfing just down the beach." so they went and told him. When Sting saw what they were working on, he told Mark "you've nailed it with this one." (again again something like). There are several versions of this story out there, this is based on Mark's recollections from several interviews I have seen.
They’re singing it From the perspective that they’re working their asses off in a furniture store delivering furniture, and these guys are on television with their earrings in the make up, not working at all. They see the band is having the easy life and not having to work for their money.
Anecdotally, Mark was in a hardware store, and his song "Sultans of Swing" came on the display TVs, and he heard the stocker/delivery guys bitching and moaning about how the f*****s on MTV had such easy lives. He grabbed his notebook and a pencil, then proceeded to follow the guys around the store, copying down everything they said. Then he put it all into a song, and, in so doing, created one of the most recognisable guitar riffs of all time. Mark and his brother are Glaswegians, so the f word has a far different connotation, especially in that era.

Totally agree. Everyone today is expected to be "politically correct" at all times over fear of being canceled or sent to the personnel office. That song would not have become a hit if the line was "that little LGBQ person with the earing and the makeup . . .". Actually, one of the things I like most about Mark Knopfler’s songs is that they are generally stories, both the ones he’s written for Dire Straits and in his solo and collaborative performances. Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road, Done with Bonaparte, Lights of Taormina, Sailing to Philadelphia, Brothers in Arms, Postcards from Paraguay, Long Cool Girl, Tunnel of Love, Golden Heart, If This is Good-bye and many more. Songs about history, people, events - all fascinating both musically and lyrically.
That whole intro is legendary, and the riff is just insane. To this day, this is the first song I play on any new speakers/headphones/amps to test them out - it covers a huge dynamic range, and it's totally kick-ass, what's not to love. Btw, Mark stopped using the f-slur when he plays this live a bunch of years back - the 80s were a different time, when that word got thrown around way too casually, and he was directly quoting what he heard in the convo that inspired the song, but he's changed it with the times. Im 72 and it has taken about 60 years to come to the realization that from the 60's through the 80's so many of the top bands were British and I didn't even know! Little bro you understood the point exactly on the part of the millionaire!! They were basically saying quit hating on that dude he's living his best life. Now can you imagine 5-year-old me when MTV was a brand new channel? My mom and my Dad with a cold one sitting down in the living room with me and we're all stunned watching these great music videos. And that opening Riff is probably one of the greatest openings of all time. This song is absolute perfection. We would watch about an hour just music videos after video as if they were mini movies. And that CGI they did was a very early version of it, from what I understand was very difficult to do and very time-consuming it wasn't a simple task. And who also remembers vh1? They were the easy listening version of MTV
Love the band, Mark Knopfler and his playing and the reaction. If you want more Dire Straits, i recommend "One World" "Brothers in Arms" "Industrial Disease" "Romeo and Juliet" "Tunnel of Love" "Your Latest Trick" "On Every Street". Brian May is a cosmic-level superstar; legendary rocker from the '70s and decades onwards, then actual goddamn astro-physicist who was on the asteroid "Bennu" sample return mission which was in the news not very long ago at all. I recall hearing an interview with Mark Knopfler talking about how Sting came to be in this song. He basically said the collaboration came about when Sting happened to be recording in the same studio as Dire Straits. Mark invited Sting to contribute to the song. Sting improvised the, "I want my MTV" vocal hook during the recording session, and it became an iconic part of the song.

As someone who's been playing guitar since 1980, you have no idea how many people I've heard over the years literally say "I should have learnt to play the guitar." This was the first song to be played on MTV Europe and to be honest. No truer lyrics have ever been written.

So as others have pointed out, this is Sting doing the "I want my MTV" part. This is because the Police did an ad for MTV where they said that very line. On top of that the music used for "I want my MTV" section is actually borrowed from the Police's "Don't stand so close to me" written by Sting... because of this Sting gets credit as co-writer of the music.
Apparently Dire Straits was in Monserrat recording the album and Mark said something like "You know it would be great to have Sting on this" and someone in the Studio said (again something like)... "Oh, he's on holiday surfing just down the beach." so they went and told him. When Sting saw what they were working on, he told Mark "you've nailed it with this one." (again again something like).
There are several versions of this story out there, this is based on Mark's recollections from several interviews I have seen.
They’re singing it From the perspective that they’re working their asses off in a furniture store delivering furniture, and these guys are on television with their earrings in the make up, not working at all. They see the band is having the easy life and not having to work for their money.
The lyrics are from the POV of manual workers, lamenting how musicians get their money easier than they do.

“I want my MTV!!!” was a big campaign slogan for mtv around that time so Dire Straits used it in their video…genius!!
Anecdotally, Mark was in a hardware store, and his song "Sultans of Swing" came on the display TVs, and he heard the stocker/delivery guys bitching and moaning about how the f*****s on MTV had such easy lives. He grabbed his notebook and a pencil, then proceeded to follow the guys around the store, copying down everything they said. Then he put it all into a song, and, in so doing, created one of the most recognisable guitar riffs of all time. Mark and his brother are Glaswegians, so the f word has a far different connotation, especially in that era.

And while it's not a measure of quality, you can learn Smoke on the Water in 20 minutes as a beginner. There are professionals who STILL can't play the Money For Nothing riff accurately because it is a BALL breaker.

Totally agree. Everyone today is expected to be "politically correct" at all times over fear of being canceled or sent to the personnel office. That song would not have become a hit if the line was "that little LGBQ person with the earing and the makeup . . .". Actually, one of the things I like most about Mark Knopfler’s songs is that they are generally stories, both the ones he’s written for Dire Straits and in his solo and collaborative performances. Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road, Done with Bonaparte, Lights of Taormina, Sailing to Philadelphia, Brothers in Arms, Postcards from Paraguay, Long Cool Girl, Tunnel of Love, Golden Heart, If This is Good-bye and many more. Songs about history, people, events - all fascinating both musically and lyrically.
That whole intro is legendary, and the riff is just insane. To this day, this is the first song I play on any new speakers/headphones/amps to test them out - it covers a huge dynamic range, and it's totally kick-ass, what's not to love. Btw, Mark stopped using the f-slur when he plays this live a bunch of years back - the 80s were a different time, when that word got thrown around way too casually, and he was directly quoting what he heard in the convo that inspired the song, but he's changed it with the times. Knopfler over heard a discussion between 2 workers in a white goods store and MTV was playing on a tv in the store and they were moaning that playing in a band wasnt a proper job as they had to install fridges, TVs etc...thats where the lyrics come from.

And that opening Riff is probably one of the greatest openings of all time. This song is absolute perfection.
We would watch about an hour just music videos after video as if they were mini movies.
And that CGI they did was a very early version of it, from what I understand was very difficult to do and very time-consuming it wasn't a simple task.

Love the band, Mark Knopfler and his playing and the reaction. If you want more Dire Straits, i recommend "One World" "Brothers in Arms" "Industrial Disease" "Romeo and Juliet" "Tunnel of Love" "Your Latest Trick" "On Every Street". A couple of those are just personal favorites but there are a LOT of great DS tunes. You almost cant go wrong with them. Happy reacting!

Brian May is a cosmic-level superstar; legendary rocker from the '70s and decades onwards, then actual goddamn astro-physicist who was on the asteroid "Bennu" sample return mission which was in the news not very long ago at all.

I recall hearing an interview with Mark Knopfler talking about how Sting came to be in this song. He basically said the collaboration came about when Sting happened to be recording in the same studio as Dire Straits. Mark invited Sting to contribute to the song. Sting improvised the, "I want my MTV" vocal hook during the recording session, and it became an iconic part of the song.
