My boyfriend and our mutual friends introduced me to this game and as a dino nerd I chose dinos to start with in a mock-game with my boyfriend to learn the rules. When I then went on to play with three others they all had titans and I had dinos and robots while it was also my first real game. Well I won that game XD It was probably the greatest moment of my life lmao
I got the base game and Awesome Level on my birthday in September 2015. The very next day, I got Cthulhu and the Big Geeky Box. The remaining sets (at the time: Science Fiction Double Feature, Monster Smash, Pretty Pretty and Munchkin) were all purchased a month later. I then got the future sets as they came out, even taking to eBay to get the All-Stars.
It is! Just bought this as my first expansion lol. Saw it at the local game store. Said yes please cuz it’s in his top 3 on his expansions ranked video
Is there any chance you could do this list again updated with all the new factions? I find it super useful, even though I’ve bought all the factions as a means of slowly introducing players to the game, and helping them come up with combinations with each new set.
I personally bought my main box, and then the "It's your fault" expansion, just due to enjoying the themes the most. But it seems super fun just to check.
Funny enough, my first two expansions were big in Japan and the obligatory Cthulhu. Both have become some of our favorites though munchkin not so much.
As usual, great thorough video Jim! I am also ambivalent towards Cthulhu but when you guys spoke to Paul Peterson and he mentioned maybe revisiting the mythos it kind of got me excited.
I don't understand why so many people hate the Cthulhu set. It's not overpowered, it can have great synergies with cards outside of the expansion, it doesn't suck (except Innsmouth), it's unique, and it doesn't slow down the game because you're busy playing 6 actions on one turn (like wizards). I ordered it a couple days ago, so I haven't had the chance to try it myself, but I've seen most of the cards and it just doesn't make sense to me.
When Cthulu was first released i remember our group being so confused by it so we sort of just stopped using those factions for a little. We came back to it later after we were more used to the game and we were surprised that they confused us originally and were amazed at how good those factions are (minus innsmouth). We love the munchkin set in our group, I just dont draft from it as often simply because I dont want to deal with 2 more decks of cards, even tho the cards themselves dont really bother me, besides Potion of Halitosis. I hate it, and it always seems to be drawn by the other players at the table lol. Munchkin is nice tho cause it helps some of the weaker factions like Vampires since they can kill monsters.
We used our phones or dice for scores. I got the game the day of release, but i dont remember how long it took for us to realize it was our favorite game. funnily enough the combo to win the first game was Zombie Robots...i wonder how many other groups had that happen without having any prior knowledge of the game.
mrDROCK so do I can’t stand not having sleeves. You also may play a faction more then others so it will become worn and you could tell which cards are which.
I definitely have to sleeve as well. Plus it helps allow me to use custom factions because the cards don't have to match exactly if I use the opaque back sleeves.
Might need to do another video of this cus we now have way more factions than before. Also, Disney has added some useful stuff like bases, base tokens, and goblin coin. I’d probably suggest that one as one of the first to buy, if not the first.
My favourite combo is bear rider greeks for one simple reason you can kill every other unit in the game and score 2 bases with this combo: any minion on a big place which will score then favour of hermes and place highground on a place then move all enemy cards with your pretty much borsecht and score that base and then win the game and lose all your frinds☺
I’m looking for what expansions I want to buy first and my group is experienced with the rules so that doesn’t apply to us. What expansions would you say are the most fun to play?
Time Travelers focus on recursion in what feels like a watered-down zombie way, rather than having mechanics unique to them. There's not much that uniquely screams time travel outside of Do Over. In other videos, I mention ideas like predrawing cards early, messing with the phases of a turn, doing things that take place on future turns, etc. I love time travel as a theme, and this was a thematic miss for me. But still a great expansion
Thanks for all your support. You should still be able to get sheep, but act soon. I believe the link is alderacstore.com/smash-up-sheep-limit-1-per-household/ Let me know if this doesn't work for you
You can contact your Friendly Local Game Store (FLGS) to see if they are having an event, or you can attend a Friendly Acutely Remote CrankItUp Event (FARCE)
Hey Alan, I'll look into the best way to keep it updated over time, but I would put International Incident at the top of phase 2 (go big or go home) and I'd put Oops between What Were We Thinking and Cease and Desist
A bit of a long story, but I didn't get to play my first game until Monster. But I wanted the game for a while - I just didn't have a gaming group because I started moving across states at the end of 2012.
Hi Jim, I would put "Oops..." into the beginning of Phase 4 The Completionist Phase probably before or right after purchasing Big in Japan/Titans Event Kit. Oops is one of my top favorite expansions, but it introduces dueling that tends to be controversial. It also introduces burying as well which isn't as complicated as dueling, but it still adds complexity and other expansions have not reused these concepts since. Hope that helps...
Trevor Stoll Magic the gathering cards hold their value. They can basically serve as currency. One card can average 15 or 20 bucks. I can’t take one smash up card, go to a hobby or game shop, and sell it or trade it. Not the same thing here. Maybe is you could buy decks separately, but you can’t. 4 small decks for 20 bucks is overpriced. 13 bucks, maybe, would be appropriate

My brother and I joined Smash Up late, so our introduction was through the Munchkin expansion.

I know this video is a year old, but the World Tour expansion (International Incident) is A-MA-ZING
yes it is. It is the best expansion since It's Your Fault. I haven't decided how to keep this update to date yet

I use to play this game when it first came out. I decided to make a big trade for the game and 9 expansions. Thanks for such a great video.

Inexplicably, the Cthulhu set is missing some Ongoing labels, so I can understand the confusion
Perfect video Jim. Thanks so much!!!
I remember having to keep score with pen and paper before any expansions came out.
I officially knight you the OG General Ivan

You don't sleeve?!
Maybe I just have different circumstances working with teenagers, but I sleeve all my Smash Up factions.

Tomorrow's video actually covers this topic
@@CrankItUp Thanks! You've been a huge help!
Do you have a matrix of your recommended pairings written down?
Anyone bother to clarify the sentence: Time travelers are a bit Zombiesque to me? at 18:45 in the video
Time Travelers focus on recursion in what feels like a watered-down zombie way, rather than having mechanics unique to them. There's not much that uniquely screams time travel outside of Do Over. @@CrankItUp i love doctor who, always laugh when ''doctor when hits the table''
maybe the flavor is that they move between bases and relive actions/moments. IDK
I would like the base set, over 9000 pack, cease and desist cuz game of thrones, science fiction, oops I did it again and 70's pack and monster pack.
Great video dude!! Has always, by the way, can I still get the sheep's deck????
Thanks for all your support. You should still be able to get sheep, but act soon. I believe the link is alderacstore.com/smash-up-sheep-limit-1-per-household/
Let me know if this doesn't work for you
Thanks man!!! It works perfect! Adding sheeps to my shopping car right now hahaha
How does someone obtain the titans event kit? I'd love to have titans for the other factions.
You can contact your Friendly Local Game Store (FLGS) to see if they are having an event, or you can attend a Friendly Acutely Remote CrankItUp Event (FARCE)
What if none the local game stores hold Smash Up events? There are about 8 around here, but they only do tabletop RPGs and CCGs.
Hi Mariya, I don't know if you ever got a Titans event kit, but they are available for sale finally on AEG's website: alderacstore.com/titans-pack/
Do you think this guide could be updated?
Hey Alan, I'll look into the best way to keep it updated over time, but I would put International Incident at the top of phase 2 (go big or go home) and I'd put Oops between What Were We Thinking and Cease and Desist
So when did you first get into smash up? When I bought the game the latest expansion was Science Fiction Double Feature
FatherTime89 I got in before they had awesome level 9000. I remember playing the game and keeping score with pen and paper.
A bit of a long story, but I didn't get to play my first game until Monster. But I wanted the game for a while - I just didn't have a gaming group because I started moving across states at the end of 2012.
for me i first found the marvel edition at a game store then went home played it with my family then fond out i already had the origanle in my room
You should add the game title into your video title so people will find it easier when searching.
thanks for the feedback. The videos should be tagged appropriate to help with searches, and try to keep the names short, but I'll see what we can do
What phase would you fit the "Oops..." into?
Hi Jim, I would put "Oops..." into the beginning of Phase 4 The Completionist Phase probably before or right after purchasing Big in Japan/Titans Event Kit. Oops is one of my top favorite expansions, but it introduces dueling that tends to be controversial. It also introduces burying as well which isn't as complicated as dueling, but it still adds complexity and other expansions have not reused these concepts since. Hope that helps...
Why are the expansions so expensive? It’s just cards. 20 bucks for an expansion? Should be 10
You should try Magic: The Gathering and then you will appreciate the price tag...
Trevor Stoll Magic the gathering cards hold their value. They can basically serve as currency. One card can average 15 or 20 bucks. I can’t take one smash up card, go to a hobby or game shop, and sell it or trade it. Not the same thing here.

All joking aside, you are buying someones idea, time and work.
Trevor Stoll yeah, there is truth in that. Dudes gotta make money somehow
