- Desert Melody Makers from Yuendumu, singing in Warlpiri & English
Desert Melody Makers is a desert reggae band from Yuendumu in Central Australia, 300km northwest of Mparntwe/Alice Springs. The band comes from a musical community with five or six active bands and can range from a six or 9-10-piece act, depending on the setup.
Formed in 2023, by Lance ‘LT The Soundman’ Turner, a recording and sound engineer, he writes songs on midi keyboard with the band’s Jessiah Fry. Their songs sung in Warlpiri, Luritji and English are about homeland, community, equality and living in harmony. LT aimed to start a band where members all shared equally.
Their sound is an uplifting, feel-good mix of funk, rock, dub, blues and rock-reggae. Influenced by Peter Tosh, Ziggy Marley, songs from church, and “Indigenous bands old and upcoming that opened doors for us,” said LT. With two talented multi-instrumentalists, the band can change things up effortlessly with each song.
Appearances in 2024 include Bush Bands Bash 20th Anniversary and Desert Festival, where they play ahead of Bunna Lawrie & Coloured Stone.
Desert Melody Makers are looking forward to getting into the studio and releasing their first single.
