In Turkey, hazelnuts are never brought into contact with water.. After collecting, the leaves are separated by machine, then the shelled hazelnuts are dried by keeping them in the sun. Afterwards, the hazelnuts are sold directly to the seller. As far as I can see, the difference between hazelnuts is that our hazelnuts are a little brighter and oilier.
Fascinating, and I love it! I grew up in the Deep South on a pecan farm. My dad had a sixth grade formal education yet worked his way to become an engineer at a fortune 100 company, with several patented inventions. So yes, we had a few “Franks” as well. Fast forward 50 years and I have 30 acres and still growing pecans. A few years ago I started growing hazelnuts and by 2025 I should have a five acre orchard. Thank you for the inspiration! We’re doing the impossible here in upstate South Carolina growing Norton wine grapes and European Filberts alongside traditional southern vegetables and microgreens. Who would have thought?
Where I live near Lebanon, Oregon there are young hazelnut orchards seemingly everywhere. There is a large orchard just down the road that is only two years old. The price must be pretty good now.
Any advice for someone considering buying a farm. We have not decided yet what we are going to do yet but I have looked into starting a nut tree farm vs a vegetable or fruit farm.
Well I hope you got your farm on our homestead we are planting all the different kinds of fruit and nut trees and shrubs that will grow here even got figs and goji berries plus a garden the garden takes the most amount of work but it's rewarding
I hope you didn't waste the water you took a shower in. Some places water is not as rare as in other areas at certain times of the year. Where you live it may be a precious rare commodity. Oregon is a relatively rainy area so it isn't waste if you have an over abundance.
Lovely farm! I just ordered a pair of dwarf American hazelnuts as a surprise for my husband for our anniversary. Is this the type of hazelnuts y'all have?
