I never realized how much of a strong character Sam was. This showed how much better he deserved. I mean, they both did but Sam wanted to have a normal life. Go to college, marry his girl, have a future just like everyone else but no. His father had to force him into doing the "family business". Regardless to John, Sam's life was at risk the moment Mary made the deal. Azazel told Sam that Jessica died because Sam was off course, she was in the way. So, no, he couldn't have a normal life, he wanted vengeance after Jessica was killed, he kept getting angry at John for not letting him be involved. It isnt Johns fault at all. Fantastic, as usual. I just finished season 1 for the umpteenth time, but I’m gonna go back and rewatch this when I’m farther in, like season 10. I think it will have even greater impact on me then.
This video is so beautiful, I have this relationship with my dad. I don't like him, he's awful, a bigot, and all around I don't like him as a person. But part of me loves him because he's my dad and of course you want to love your dad. He's disappointed in me for not being what he wants me to be, and I really relate to Sam so much because of that. But unlike John, my dad will not ever change and he will never regret his actions, he's a narcissist and thinks and truly believes everyone is to blame and he's not wrong at all. Beautiful video, keep up the phenomenal work as always.
Funny, my father sounds much like yours, but i dont relate to sams pov at all. 😅 Edited: further thought, probably don't relate to Sam because i am not rebellious, antagonistic and looking for a fight with my father. I don't understand the mentality behind it.

I disagree with the Dean being the less loved son. John literally sacrificed everything he had been hunting for, as well as the colt and life to save Dean's life. He loved both his sons equally and rewatching season 1 has pretty much shown that. I dont know where these ideas come from to be honest, as nothing john ever said or did confirms any of it.
I agree with Angel. The thing they all SUCKED at was communication, so there were all these assumptions about each others’ motivations. I never felt the hate for JW that other fans hold on to. I think he was driven by grief (Mary) and love (his boys), not wanting to lose them or see them have to live the hunter life. Just my unsolicited 2 cents. 🤷🏻♀️🤗
@@eightimpalas Yeah, completely agree! There were so many cross wires between the three of them, everyone had their perspective and I don't think they really looked deeper into the motivations of the others. I am the same with not feeling the hate for John. He had a lot going on, and even in this ordinary world, people have done and do things John did. I've read recently how a grandmother handed her young grandchildren guns and taught them how to shoot to help them survive an attack with war, it brought me back to thinking about John training the boys to hunt and defend themselves against monsters. I think it's very human to feel powerless to protect your children so you arm them and teach them to protect themselves in case you can't. Through out season 1, Sam is being persistent on being in the fight with the demons, but John countless times tell him it's not safe, it's bigger than they'd imagined and that he wanted him and Dean far away from it, Sam however became more angry the more John tried to keep them out of the loop. To John (and the reality of the actual story) Sam and Dean weren't safe whilst the demons were involved, especially Sam due to the demon blood. So he was very protective of them, and he also made it clear that he wanted them to have normal lives, he was also grieving his wife passing. Again another normal human thing. There's families in our ordinary world who still hunting down a person who murdered their family member decades later. It's not something you can brush under the table and just move on from, except in Johns story, the murderer is a monster who has plans for at least one of his sons. I might have to do a season 1 John video if I can find the right song. :P
@@AngelDove Saving Dean's life to leave him with the burden of possibly having to kill Sam? When John admits that he put to much on Deans shoulders and that he's sorry, for a moment you think maybe he's not so bad after all - only to give Dean that order just a damn minute later. What kind of sick brain of a parent orders his son to kill his own brother? And not just kill him, no, kill him if he can't save him. So that, in the worst case, Dean has to live the rest of his life knowing that Sammy only had to die because he couldn't save him. Does that sound like fatherly love to you? You remember how Dean realised that his father was possessed by Azazel? "He'd be furious. That I wasted a bullet. He wouldn't be proud of me. He'd tear me a new one." Azazel was too NICE to play a convincing John. How many times in his childhood did Dean have to step back to look after Sammy? How much fear and responsibility was he exposed to since early childhood, e.g. in the Shtriga episode? How he stole Christmas presents for Sammy and claimed John was there. How Bobby got into a fight with John for playing baseball with Dean instead of practicing shooting with him. How he left him in a children's reformatory for stealing PB&J. I can hardly watch any childhood flashback episode without hating John more and more.... That John was fanatically hunting the demon, I can understand. That he trained his boys far too early, too. That he dragged them along their entire childhood and borderline neglected them, no. As if two children were safer alone in a hotel room for weeks than with Bobby or another trustworthy hunter. (And yes, I could rant on about this for much longer 😂)
It saddens me how much he's hated. I don't understand why and when I've asked. I am never given sources for the accusations of abuse, just a lot of personal narrative to the belief instead of hard facts showing it.
The last thing that Sam wanted in the world was to be in the situation that his brother was, blindly obeying his usually not present father. You wonder what he was thinking when he was leaning up against that tree stump. It would have been easier if John had told Sam outright that he loved him. It was a different story when Dean told Sam that their Dad would always drive past the college to make sure that h is youngest was safe. Family issues...YIKES

It's the second episode of season 1, and I believe he was holding the journal because he was reading through it for the monster they were hunting (the wendigo) etc, for me it would be more logical on the emotional side that he would be thinking about his girlfriend dying not long ago than where his dad was or what his dad thought. I think her death would definitely take emotional and thoughts priority over what his father was thinking - especially since at this point he was still angry about everything, the dialogue regards to John not being proud etc didn't come up until episode 8 - at least 2 months later
Something I always really disliked was the way Dean told Sam that John would go by Stanford to check on him, and the whole John was just scared of what would happen to Sam without him there. I mean, the fear thing, *then why kick him out?!* He'd be a lot safer at Stanford if he felt he could call John or Dean if anything happened, but instead he felt as though he couldn't because of the way John handled it. And him going by Stanford to check on him. He should've gone and seen him, apologised and actually let him know he cared. I just never liked how Dean said it as if it should make up for everything. And I also didn't like the thing about how Sam apparently could've called John. First of all, Sam was the kid and John was the parent, it wasn't on Sam to make that call. Second, he literally felt like he couldn't. Third, did he even have a way to?! Did he even have John's phone number? I understand why Dean would say this, he didn't really understand how fucked up their childhood was and he *did* just blindly follow whatever John said. But it's just something that's always bothered me... :( (That's not to say Sam never made any mistakes, I've just never liked the way Dean always put so much blame on Sam for the fact that John kicked him out for wanting to go to College and not risk his life every day...)
From that same episode Dean mentions Sam said some pretty horrible things which caused John to tell him to go and not come back/kicked him out, a heat of the moment thing which Sam did not obviously realise because it sounds like he left and never went back, Deans words " if i remember, you said a few choice words". Then Sam says " why didn't he tell me" and Dean points out that Sam didnt call either. i know that 20 is considered young in today's world, but 20 was a grown adult back then who could handle themselves. Many people started theirs families, were getting married around that age. I and my friends were a few of those. I can't count the many times my friends left home after a heated arguement with their parents and both parents and friends were too stubborn to bury the hatchet and call the other up. It faded on its own later on. Not gonna lie, it happened to me too at one point. 😅 I get that to be honest, it is a realistic situation and does happen too much in our world, two people too stubborn to be the bigger person and call etc. It is a human flaw sadly.
@@AngelDove I get that, but I still don't like the way they put it. Because Sam was the kid in the situation, John was the parent. He was forcing Sam to travel around risking his life while they tried to find the thing that killed someone he never even knew and who, from what it always sounded like to me, they didn't really tell him much about. It's just always bothered me. Because like I said, I know Sam wasn't perfect in the situation, but he was the kid. I do believe it was a horrible situation all around, but as the parent John is the one who should've reached out and apologised. And I actually like John a lot more than most fans, he was definitely not a very good Father, but I do think he tried his best and wasn't just a horrible person. It was shown that he truly did love the boys.

My fav band, one of my most fav songs of that band, along with my fav show and one of my fav characters of that show, altogether - let's just agree there is an amount of fangirling and crying because of fandoms that is okay, and then there is one that is not healthy anymore, then there's also one that reads "OBSESSION DANGER" and Baby already took me over all these lines already

Fantastic, as usual. I just finished season 1 for the umpteenth time, but I’m gonna go back and rewatch this when I’m farther in, like season 10. I think it will have even greater impact on me then.
This video is so beautiful, I have this relationship with my dad. I don't like him, he's awful, a bigot, and all around I don't like him as a person. But part of me loves him because he's my dad and of course you want to love your dad. He's disappointed in me for not being what he wants me to be, and I really relate to Sam so much because of that. But unlike John, my dad will not ever change and he will never regret his actions, he's a narcissist and thinks and truly believes everyone is to blame and he's not wrong at all. Beautiful video, keep up the phenomenal work as always.

Edited: further thought, probably don't relate to Sam because i am not rebellious, antagonistic and looking for a fight with my father. I don't understand the mentality behind it.

I always feel bad for both brothers. Sam who thinks he is the less loved son - and Dean who knows he is the less loved son. Screw John.
I disagree with the Dean being the less loved son. John literally sacrificed everything he had been hunting for, as well as the colt and life to save Dean's life. He loved both his sons equally and rewatching season 1 has pretty much shown that. I dont know where these ideas come from to be honest, as nothing john ever said or did confirms any of it.
I agree with Angel. The thing they all SUCKED at was communication, so there were all these assumptions about each others’ motivations. I never felt the hate for JW that other fans hold on to. I think he was driven by grief (Mary) and love (his boys), not wanting to lose them or see them have to live the hunter life. Just my unsolicited 2 cents. 🤷🏻♀️🤗

There were so many cross wires between the three of them, everyone had their perspective and I don't think they really looked deeper into the motivations of the others. I am the same with not feeling the hate for John. He had a lot going on, and even in this ordinary world, people have done and do things John did. I've read recently how a grandmother handed her young grandchildren guns and taught them how to shoot to help them survive an attack with war, it brought me back to thinking about John training the boys to hunt and defend themselves against monsters. I think it's very human to feel powerless to protect your children so you arm them and teach them to protect themselves in case you can't. Through out season 1, Sam is being persistent on being in the fight with the demons, but John countless times tell him it's not safe, it's bigger than they'd imagined and that he wanted him and Dean far away from it, Sam however became more angry the more John tried to keep them out of the loop. To John (and the reality of the actual story) Sam and Dean weren't safe whilst the demons were involved, especially Sam due to the demon blood. So he was very protective of them, and he also made it clear that he wanted them to have normal lives, he was also grieving his wife passing. Again another normal human thing. There's families in our ordinary world who still hunting down a person who murdered their family member decades later. It's not something you can brush under the table and just move on from, except in Johns story, the murderer is a monster who has plans for at least one of his sons. I might have to do a season 1 John video if I can find the right song. :P
@@AngelDove Saving Dean's life to leave him with the burden of possibly having to kill Sam?
When John admits that he put to much on Deans shoulders and that he's sorry, for a moment you think maybe he's not so bad after all - only to give Dean that order just a damn minute later. What kind of sick brain of a parent orders his son to kill his own brother? And not just kill him, no, kill him if he can't save him. So that, in the worst case, Dean has to live the rest of his life knowing that Sammy only had to die because he couldn't save him.
Does that sound like fatherly love to you?
You remember how Dean realised that his father was possessed by Azazel? "He'd be furious. That I wasted a bullet. He wouldn't be proud of me. He'd tear me a new one." Azazel was too NICE to play a convincing John.
How many times in his childhood did Dean have to step back to look after Sammy? How much fear and responsibility was he exposed to since early childhood, e.g. in the Shtriga episode? How he stole Christmas presents for Sammy and claimed John was there. How Bobby got into a fight with John for playing baseball with Dean instead of practicing shooting with him. How he left him in a children's reformatory for stealing PB&J. I can hardly watch any childhood flashback episode without hating John more and more....
That John was fanatically hunting the demon, I can understand. That he trained his boys far too early, too. That he dragged them along their entire childhood and borderline neglected them, no. As if two children were safer alone in a hotel room for weeks than with Bobby or another trustworthy hunter.
(And yes, I could rant on about this for much longer 😂)

The last thing that Sam wanted in the world was to be in the situation that his brother was, blindly obeying his usually not present father. You wonder what he was thinking when he was leaning up against that tree stump. It would have been easier if John had told Sam outright that he loved him. It was a different story when Dean told Sam that their Dad would always drive past the college to make sure that h is youngest was safe. Family issues...YIKES
I would imagine he was thinking about Jessica's death, the woman he loved and was going to marry when he was leaning against the tree log thingy

It's the second episode of season 1, and I believe he was holding the journal because he was reading through it for the monster they were hunting (the wendigo) etc, for me it would be more logical on the emotional side that he would be thinking about his girlfriend dying not long ago than where his dad was or what his dad thought. I think her death would definitely take emotional and thoughts priority over what his father was thinking - especially since at this point he was still angry about everything, the dialogue regards to John not being proud etc didn't come up until episode 8 - at least 2 months later

Something I always really disliked was the way Dean told Sam that John would go by Stanford to check on him, and the whole John was just scared of what would happen to Sam without him there.
I mean, the fear thing, *then why kick him out?!* He'd be a lot safer at Stanford if he felt he could call John or Dean if anything happened, but instead he felt as though he couldn't because of the way John handled it.
And him going by Stanford to check on him. He should've gone and seen him, apologised and actually let him know he cared. I just never liked how Dean said it as if it should make up for everything. And I also didn't like the thing about how Sam apparently could've called John. First of all, Sam was the kid and John was the parent, it wasn't on Sam to make that call. Second, he literally felt like he couldn't. Third, did he even have a way to?! Did he even have John's phone number? I understand why Dean would say this, he didn't really understand how fucked up their childhood was and he *did* just blindly follow whatever John said. But it's just something that's always bothered me... :(
(That's not to say Sam never made any mistakes, I've just never liked the way Dean always put so much blame on Sam for the fact that John kicked him out for wanting to go to College and not risk his life every day...)
From that same episode Dean mentions Sam said some pretty horrible things which caused John to tell him to go and not come back/kicked him out, a heat of the moment thing which Sam did not obviously realise because it sounds like he left and never went back, Deans words " if i remember, you said a few choice words".
Then Sam says " why didn't he tell me" and Dean points out that Sam didnt call either. i know that 20 is considered young in today's world, but 20 was a grown adult back then who could handle themselves. Many people started theirs families, were getting married around that age. I and my friends were a few of those. I can't count the many times my friends left home after a heated arguement with their parents and both parents and friends were too stubborn to bury the hatchet and call the other up. It faded on its own later on. Not gonna lie, it happened to me too at one point. 😅
I get that to be honest, it is a realistic situation and does happen too much in
our world, two people too stubborn to be the bigger person and call etc. It is a human flaw sadly.
@@AngelDove I get that, but I still don't like the way they put it. Because Sam was the kid in the situation, John was the parent. He was forcing Sam to travel around risking his life while they tried to find the thing that killed someone he never even knew and who, from what it always sounded like to me, they didn't really tell him much about. It's just always bothered me. Because like I said, I know Sam wasn't perfect in the situation, but he was the kid. I do believe it was a horrible situation all around, but as the parent John is the one who should've reached out and apologised. And I actually like John a lot more than most fans, he was definitely not a very good Father, but I do think he tried his best and wasn't just a horrible person. It was shown that he truly did love the boys.
@@Dazzlefae My current headcanon: Sam thought his Dad was disappointed in him for not being more like Dean (while Dean thought John loved Sam more). John loved them both. John hated every thought of it, but he "let" Sam go to college by telling him to stay gone.
