Oh man, that will save me so much frustration! I I once completely reset my garmin because I thought it was screwed up when it was just the wrong cable. Fantastic find Shane!
In the end, by trial and error some months ago, I've ended up with 3 cables for 3 garmin devices and labelled with tabs for the data, and one generic one for charging. The rest got binned! Just hope one doesn't break now! Useful though.
This is a revelation! I seriously need a more advanced device like this that can classify all the different types of connectors I have accumulated in my nightmare drawer of tangled cables. My Garmin GPS unit in the car is the absolute worst for finicky USB cable requirements and I have found only a single USB mini cable that it finds acceptable for updating the maps from a computer.
Totally ! These things have made maintenance of all my USB powered devices much easier. I use the ones that monitor charge as well as cable status Great tip they cost ~$5 US as you say easy to find on Amazn , ebay and alibab. They tellyou the cables bad not why like llama'S example They help you spot buggy cheap cables, charging capacity of aging "permanently " installed batteries and worn out battery recharger packs Some Mandarin may be required for manual and some screens.
Shane, You can tell by looking at the cable housing. On the metal outer cover that you insert you will feel too little bumps for the Data cable. The Power cable does not have these. .
very nice piece of simple tech. in an emergency, with a bunch of usb cables, compare them all. power only will almost always be thinner by eye as they only house two wires, instead of four wires in a data cable. this device is better if you have it though!!!!
I think I'm pretty nerdy and I've never known a USB cable to not follow the USB spec --- there are power only USB micro cables?! That explains a lot of headaches the astpast...
@@MrBongobiggins With Garmin you can just power the device off and it'll keep charging if you happen to charge with a data cable. Somewhat an inconvenience, but better than losing sanity.
La idea es buena y ya muy conocida. Como consejo pueden adicionar uno para la prueba de la conexión de gnd(no confundir con negativo), así mismo modificar el usb hembra con el microusb deben estar juntos para no forzar mucho en caso de los cables pequeños.
Now can you solve for cable vs USB port malfunctioning? I have so many cables that seem to work for a while then stop. However I also have USB ports that only work if I Jimmy the cable in the right position. It’s the modern NES cartridge tango. Any cables that stand up better to use? Any way to fix a wiggly port?
Can someone give me a link for something like this on US Amazon? That have lots of testers, but I cannot tell by their descriptions if they test precisely for power and data as opposed to just power. Thanks for any help. I'm sure others would like to know too.
Then there are cheap USB C cables. As we know USB C - intended to be able to inserted either way but the cheap cables only wire one side! As per the Russian saying "doveryai no proveryai" - Trust but verify
I want one, but they don't ship to my country. Also I don't just want A to micro. There are so many options A or C in one end The other end: A(female), B, B(USB3), mini, micro(USB3), C,
Sold out already! That seller just got hit with a bunch of sales and has no idea where it came from!

This would be great for detecting 'dodgy' USB-C cables too.

Explains why after trying a bunch of cables it took me over 30 minutes to connect my Kindle to the computer. Good tip.
Thanks!

What a find this device is! I’ve had the same problems and need one of these - didn’t know why I was having problems. Solved.

Garmin’s definitely only like the cable they came with. It was a problem back with the garmin nuvi car gps. I guess this is why, I didn’t know.

Doing God's work there Llama... Many thanks
🤣👌🏼
What the heck! Such a useful thing and never knew there were two types!
same same!
unf..g believable ;-)
superb!
I just ordered this after this video. It's incredibly annoying when a cable has the USB data symbol on it but is still power-only.
So a continuity checker. much easier than trying to use a multimeter
Just throw away the power only cables is my advice
The only issue with this is it turns the device on when you plug it in.

No, no, no! Chop them into pieces, THEN throw them away!! You want to be SURE they never return!
Top tip.👍
Thanks Shane. Ride On 🚴🏼♂️💨👍🏼
I try to remember to put a piece of tape on the power only ones.
That is brilliant
wOAH amazing thing you got there
Just ordered one some shall see
i hope there's a stock in lazada or shopee of this.
Just had a look and it is out of stock already at the moment. Wonder how how it will be before it is back in stock.

Excellent, how do you test printer cables
You throw that printer away and get a wifi enabled one. :)
This video is a service to world peace. Ordered.
World sanity at the very least. 😁
Between those cables you have about 73% chance of grabbing a data cable the first time.
Never knew about power only USB cables, mind blown

Not easily. That's one for the manufacturer of the device to answer.
@@gplama Hey, is there a tester to test charger cables? I'd like to know if the cables specs are truthful or not in regards to voltage and current.
@@anxiousearth680 There's devices out there that'll do this.

I'm not aware of any Amazon store selling these.

Could just put a piece of tape around the cable....
Can you get these in the UK?
Should be global shipping.
@@gplama cheers Shane. Keep up the good work. 😀

There are so many options
A or C in one end
The other end:
A(female), B, B(USB3), mini, micro(USB3), C,
And they are sold out...
Throw everything with power only away.
Keep 1 power only for public charging, throw the rest away.
@@ChrisP978 Good point.
nah, theyre useful as spare cables for power only charging like lights or battery packs
Seems like the power only cables are destined for the trash.
Or ebay
Too bad only MicroUSB.
If i have a Power only cable I cut it and put it in the recycling garbage.
Useless for USB3.0 and USB- C and it has 24 conductors.
Good riddance! to micro-USB
