  • There is a healthy herd of Bison, American Buffalo, on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. The island will only support 500 bison through the winter so each fall they are rounded up. A week after the roundup they begin working the bison. The public is invited and tours are given of the process. Each animal is given a health exam and receives injections. A decision is made for each animal as to its future on the island. It will either remain or be sold at auction. This is necessary to keep the herd healthy. Animals to be auctioned are placed in individual pens. Animals to remain on the island are held in corrals until the working is complete and then they are allowed to return to free range.
