OK. I stopped midway before my kids interupt me. Lol.
The age demographic in the last few surveys has gone much higher in older fans with significant numbers in their 50s, 60s,70s. I cannot quote the numbers right now.
I'm a 51 year old ARMY. I found BTS when I needed them. I had given up on so much post bad marriage, trauma & health problems. BTS came in singing and dancing into my heart. The Love Yourself campaign and the lyrics, the UN speech just got me. I have regained all my interests, am healthier, and am pursuing big changes in education and career. BTS and ARMY got me going and keep pushing. My kids support me. I have dear friends in ARMY. This is a priceless experience and a wonderful community inspired by 7 amazing men.
Past trauma no longer holds me back.
The lyrics are so deep and inspiring. I'm enjoying your journey.

He loved it so much I found more of their music for him, and that's where our love started. My grandbaby is non verbal but he communicates with ease his love for BTS music. His favourite songs are, Idol, Mic Drop, Fire, Not Today, Save Me. I'm thankful to him for introducing me to BTS. For me, I love the music, the lyrics, the messages, and their kind souls. 37:40 girl, that was literally my reaction when I first watched this video. It kinda made me a bit sad to see that it's ingrained in our culture and society that even I didn't question anything until I became an ARMY. I remember having a conversation with my dad about it after I had just gotten my first BTS album and it came with a poster. I put it up on my wall and my dad made a comment like "just don't become a mindless fangirl zombie" or something along those lines. At the time I was 16 and I'd never really been a part of any fandom before but it did make me upset whenever people would go to those assumptions that I was some sort of delulu fan. Plus, why does it matter if it's stereotypical? Yes, I'm an 18-year-old female and I like BTS, it doesn't make me any less of a human being.

    • @julieharris4700

Writing this comment as I watch...
Monologue - I just want to say that I know ARMY can be overwhelming and a bit demanding in the comments. I love that you took the negative commentary and learned from it instead of getting angry about it like some reactors. We just love BTS so much that we want everyone to love and respect them as much as we do. But I do wish some ARMY wouldn't be so hard on new listeners. So if any comments feel "mean" or "harsh", please don't let it make you feel bad, its just our passion that we can't contain.
Watching you fall down the BTS rabbit hole has made my day (literally binge watching your vids now). We've all been where you are right now, falling in love with 7 Korean men and their music. I'm 45. My 16 yr old daughter got me into them 5 years ago and then my 64 yr old mom and 40 yr old sister became ARMY as well. There's no age restriction when it comes to loving Bangtan! It's brought our family so much closer together. We travel to BTS events and fangirl with each other all the time.
I'd love to explain all the albums and their meanings (its a big part of why I love them), but I have to leave in a few minutes for class. Hopefully someone else answers it in the comments, otherwise I'll come back later to reply.
Enjoy your journey! I'll be back for more. Notifications are on :)
Edit: finishing up watching before I have to run out the door and you crying over Namjoons words has me crying and now I have to go teach a class with eyeliner running down my face. I hope you're happy! lol

Crying while watching bts is not something to be embarrassed, especially not when youre a big fan. I cry about bts everyday when i was exploring them, not for shameful reasons. They touched my heart and soul, to feel emotions, to feel a connection with them, to find comfort and they heals me. Most army would say we find bts when we needed them the most. Its true for my case, i was such in a dark place since pandemic started, my mental health was a wreck, more bcs i was isolated, very not good for my overthinking. But i got into bts and they gave me so much serotonin and happiness. My feelings for them goes beyond fangirling as of now, they are truly my comfort people, people who makes my struggles known, they are my besties, its weird how people i've never met makes me feel so at home. I love them to the point i want nothing but happiness comes across them. I also read older people said bts is a beacon of hope in such a cruel world. They broke down so many barriers in cultures. When you look at them, you just wonder why not all men are like them. Not bcs they are perfect or never did anything bad, but bcs they always thrive to be a better person, to improve and do lots of self-reflection, they are so loving and gentle. I truly have no words to describe their existence. At this point, i dont love them only bcs of music, but just who they are as humans. I learn so many things about life through bts. Exploring them and becoming army is one of the best thing ever happened to me

BTS tend to have sort of thematic eras for their music that can be identified via their albums and are usually reflective of their current stage in life. Not all of the eras are a full series but some are. For example, there is the "youth" trilogy, which is how we commonly refer to their first few albums. , The Most Beautiful Moment In Life albums,, and the Love Yourself trilogy. Then they has Map of the Soul: Persona and Map of the Soul: 7. I think it's partly because of how they tend to tell stories with their music.
For example, the album Love Yourself: Her has songs focused on feelings of love, feeling like love is destiny, being fated to be together, etc. But even in that album it has songs like Best of Me that hint at the upcoming conflict.
In Love Yourself: Tear it has songs that talk about the dangers of changing or hiding your true self in an effort to make someone else happy....about losing yourself in the relationship and the inevitable collapse of that relationship because of it.
In Love Yourself: Answer, that album is the ultimate conclusion to the series where the Epiphany becomes that we must first and foremost love ourselves.
Map of the Soul thematically explores themselves as people and as artists via the concept of the persona, the shadow, and the ego. So it has a long of songs that reflect on how they are perceived and how they present themselves, what their inner fears are, and who they are.

There's also the Skool Trilogy (2 Cool 4 Skool, O!RUL82?, and Skool Luv Affair), this series of was their first three albums in their career. They talk about the struggles they've had as students - criticizing the youth's lack of dreams because their parents just dicatates what their dream should be, criticizing the education system of Korea (which is very cut-throat and mentally & emotionally damaging), and criticizing the the power imbalance that they experience with the much privileged older generation. These series showed how different they are from other artists in their industry who just typically sing love songs, especially for such a new and younger group at that time.

One thing I think is amazing is how someone who just discovers BTS and does a review, they are honest in what they are saying which is part of the purpose of reacting. Those of us who have followed the group KNOW what you are about to venture into and thus begin to offer, advice, tips etc. By the time someone gets to their 4th or 5th BTS video, THEIR TONE HAS CHANGED SO MUCH and you can tell that they are taking in all the advice and everything that they are learning about the group!!!! I find this fascinating as you can actually see that person has expanded their horizon, learned about a new culture and got comfortable with something that a few weeks ago, they never would have considered. (Also, the rabbit hole is real and you are already in it!)💜

They have helped me through so many tough times, everytime I’m sad I play either their songs or mixtapes, and I’ve made so many online friends that I met at the concert from them, they really bring everyone together just by loving us and doing what the love doing. They’ll forever be my comfort

I think the reason they are so popular among older fans is because of the depth of their lyrics and genius of their music. They are really not a typical boy band and us older fans wouldn't spend time on a shallow group with no depth. I first found BTS through my teen daughter but I am a bigger fan than she is now and I'm a 50yr old wife, mother of 2, hospital pharmacist, so not a "typical" boy-band fan lol. I would go anywhere to see them and absolutely love them all so much. In fact we just flew from Tn to California to see them in LA during the Permission to Dance concert series there (amazing by the way). So glad to see that you have found them and I'll be watching your journey and will contribute any information that might be helpful.

I would lean towards one but then I'd think about someone else but then what about so & so?! They're all just really great humans 💜 (it doesn't help that my husband is basically a mix of RM, Suga, & Jin's personalities 😅)

Usually the artists or the label give the fans their names, not the fans. This is why some fandom names seem really random, but they usually have a deep meaning (not always tho, some meanings are just as random as the names😭)
Edit: fans also dont always like their names, sometimes it takes some time to get used to them. One of the most recent fandom name that was revealed is Kep1ian, for the newly debuted girlgroup Kep1er. It means "those who support Kep1er". I personally think it kinda sounds like a name that we would give to an alien... but it's growing on me.

After watching a few of their MV at that time, id bought a DVD for her and me. To this day, I watch BTS content every day. Listen to their music every day. They make me happy. They bring such joy in everything they do. I have such a huge admiration and respect for them, they are such incredible role models because of the respect they have for their country, their culture, their fans and especially each other. They are incredibly humble and down to earth. There are no massive egos which is so surprising when they are so phenomenally successful. HUGE congrats on the explosion of subscribers (holy stars! As of this comment on Jan 10th, you gained 4,000 subscribers in less than 5 days? That is insane!!). Once I watched your Okay, your monologue, I can totally see why people are drawn to your channel. You seem so genuine and kind, and your message just feels so heartfelt. We need more people like you in the fandom. So I hope BTS's music continues to intrigue you and speak to you.
I'm sure lots of ppl have elaborated on what a bias is but just in case it wasn't clear, here's a quick rundown.
*BIAS* - A “bias” is a fan’s favorite member within a group-whether because they find them attractive, admire their talent, or just appreciate their overall appeal. Some K-Pop fans have an “ultimate bias” or their favorite not just from a group but out of all K-pop idols.
*BIAS WRECKER* - Meanwhile, a “bias wrecker” is a member who unexpectedly catches a fan’s attention and makes them rethink their original bias.
*OT7* - Being OT7 can mean one of two things in the BTS fandom, it either means you don't have a bias but instead love all the members equally or it means that, although you have a bias, you are still supportive of all the members equally.
eg: My bias in BTS is Namjoon (RM) and my wreckers are Yoongi (Suga) and Jungkook but I am OT7 all day, every day.
I myself as a 36-year-old ARMY who became a fan during the "Boy with Luv" era, I am so grateful for these guys and their music. They got me through a really tough time filled with changes, loneliness, and I was looking for some sense of comfort. Their music really saved my life during that time and I have been grateful ever since. It's really true what they say: BTS finds you when you need them the most.
Edit: MC stands for master of ceremonies or someone who acts as a host for an event, especially by introducing speakers and performers at a party or broadcast. In hip-hop music, MC is sometimes used as a synonym for “rapper” or “artist.”

It’s so split age wise because 1. We encourage it and don’t exclude people from liking BTS 2. They have some pretty deep references and meaning in their songs that an average young person would miss but an older/longer educated person will enjoy figuring out 3. BTS underdog story is universally appealing, they genuinely started oppressed but rose to #1 in the world and a person of any age can appreciate that. 4. The love BTS have for each other is incredibly appealing, they genuinely care for each other and many people of all ages lack such love in their life. It’s very healing to see genuine and loving relationships and BTS provide that through their content. If it wasn’t real they couldn’t have stayed together for so long through all their hardships 💜💜💜

They do have this balanced distribution between all ages because they have beautifull messages in their lyrics and mvs. They talk about everything within a society, depression, mentel health and awareness, unfairness, female empowerment, politics, corruption, self love, struggles young adults go through, lyrics about courage, and about being yourself....and many more. I think thats the crucial point in those fan age dynamics. Also they are super humble, down to earth and literal angels that came to help us face the world.

i heard someone describe the term ‘bias’ in kpop ages ago and i’ve never really forgot it. imagine if u had the chance to spend the day with one member, it’s the member u would chooses like u don’t necessarily love that person more than the others. it’s just one member that u connect with the most. people who are ot7 connect with them all equally but that doesn’t mean they love any member more than those who have a bias:) i hope this helps !

I found them when I needed them the most, shortly b4 my mom and sister passed. Now it's been 2 weeks since my husband of 30 yrs passed. If not for this group I'd be even more lost. For me it's everything about them. Their msg, lyricism, vocals/rap/flow/beats, personalities, everything. They are unique. A spot of hope and goodness in a sometimes ugly world. As a huge BTS fan, I think the difference that is pointed out between sports fans and female boy-band fans has to do with the relationship to sexual attraction and how the boys look. This has been a reality since Elvis Pressley and the Beatles.
My initial interest in BTS was by playing them during my commute and I was so impressed by the quality of the songs and performance. When I saw their videos, I was just as impressed with their incredible dancing abilities.
However, if you look at other K-Pop idol bands, you will see that they are often incredible singers and dancers as well. What sets BTS apart for me is the quality of the songs themselves. While many K-Pop songs are catchy, there are BTS songs (like Mic Drop and others) that I believe will become iconic among the catalog of beloved songs many years from now (like the Beatles or Whitney Houston, etc). I'm sure BTS will one day be inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame.

I was baby army in 2020, started as a casual listener and the more I learned about them, the cooler they were. In August of that year, my childhood home of 21 years burned down to basically ashes and my family and I had to live in motels/hotels just to get by.
In some twist of fate, BTS released Dynamite a day or so afterwards. I remember every night when reality hit me that I had lost everything, I would sing to myself "..Life is Dynamite.." and it got me through those empty nights. Thinking about it now, I don't think I've actually cried over losing my house because I never felt sad? Their content and music just kept me so happy and the days that followed the fire were always filled with laughter and joy. They kept me company whenever I felt alone or felt like I was nothing. I don't think I've ever felt more emotionally supported by an artist and their music.

Welcome to ARMY girl. We all get emotional like that about them. They are wonderful humans and it is so so rare in the world for artists to show that. 💜💜💜

In one fell swoop yesterday, in chronological order, I watched your curious self move from one video to the next until you were in full swoon mode. It was so heartwarming to watch and remember my own journey a mere year ago. Welcome to ARMY--you truly are an Adorable Representative. Regarding demographics: I am 77 and am part of a Discord made up of a 49, 75 and 78 year old. My neighbors ARMY member is 80. When I was at the recent BTS concert at SoFi stadium, I saw plenty of gray haired fans. I also saw quite a few fans under the age of 10! And...ummm....I think you should rethink your statement about at being at "the edge" of the rabbit hole. Pretty sure you fell right in with a little assist from Jin and Jimin.

BTS is also the reason as to why I want to learn Korean! If BTS never happened, I probably never would've had a mind set to learn Korean or go and visit South Korea

This chart is pretty old, I'm sure the percentage of ARMY over 50 has grown quite a bit. I'm 54, been ARMY for almost 4 years now.
Imo, the reason they appeal to such a diverse group of fans is that they themselves are so diverse. Everyone has a bias, a particular member they vibe with the most, even while we love every member. They are genuine and they return the dedication ARMY gives them. They always thank ARMY, write songs especially for us, and share a good portion of their lives with us.
Of course, there are crazies in the fandom, that is inevitable with a group of 40+ million people. But for the most part ARMY tries to follow BTS's message of loving ourselves and each other.

The chart is old and we all keep aging you know, so....
By the way, I just turned 55 and my daughter who started liking them in her teens is turning 20 this year. Makes sense that their fandom is aging along with the members. After all, Jin is in his 30th year now.

My bias is Jimin, my eyes automatically look for him in every performance, but I always say I have 6 bias wreckers, because I love all 7 of them, so at every point, I will be gushing over any of them. I am also happily married and I have no qualms in admitting I obsess over Jimin. Even my partner has accepted that.

Some trainees said that BTS guys in person are exactly like they come across, super nice, super down-to-earth and fun, they're almost too nice
