And my wife says the smells in our van are 99% likely to be me…

You don't want to make any sparks near the battery that smell hydrogen, which is explosive

Great point, don't go smoking near it 🙈

We have looked at caravans and found that some older caravans tend to have a horrible mucky mouldy smell that can only be caused by the way the van has been stored, most likely immediately after it’s been used, kept completely closed and air-tight. No further details required I’m sure.

I thought it was me. Applied external lynx and internal Tic -Tac etc.

Not true.. the batter ybeing over charged giving of a nasty smell does not mean the battery is knackered, not at all. what is happening is the charging system in the caravan is not cutting out when it is supposed to. the smell is from the acid bubbling in the battery and causing hydrogen fumes, very bad and dangerous if a naked flame is around... once the battery has cooled down check to see the water level and top up if needed with distilled water.... it is NOT abattery fault it is a charging fault.. over charging .. the mains goes in and a converter charging system is meant to puit ou ta charge currant to the battery , as the battery charges the current going to the battery goes down, sometimes to just milli amps if left on charge... there is no way on earth that a few milli amps can cause a battery to start boiling and bubbling....... now ona side note the battery box is supposed to be ventilated and the vent to be downwards and gasses from the batter ythat happen all the time will drop down and disperse. to get batter yfumes in the caravan you have a serious charging problem going on and possibly need a new inverter......... DO NOT DUMP THE BATTERY check the fluid level and voltage.

Happened to me, set off the CO2 monitor 0200 one night but took me the next visit to google and find out the battery had boiled
    Over!!!
Superb video as very little info about the smell / foggy inside caravan

Handy tip that Mark thanks. Would it create a fire risk if ignored?😳 Regards, Mo 😊

Yes potentially fire or explosion, the battery box is normally sufficient to stop any damage though 👍

yes its very dangerous, you have an electrical problem with the charging regulator in the caravan, this is kicking out too much current tothe batter yand the fumes are hydrogen, apart froma battery explosion ripping out the box from the caravan it can catch fire in the caravan where the charger and inverter are. normally under a bed so wont even know until the fire is going good....... most of the smells inside the van are from the plastic insulation on the wiring almost burning, gives off a rancid smell..

Useful information thank you. Other than water ingress, my other paranoia is battery condition 😉

NoWait Untill the battery cools before you disconnect any of the battery terminals as a spark could inginte the sulfur.
I've seen one explode , not a pretty sight.
Once the battery is cool then remove battery leads.👍
