The nuclear powered rocket is an actual idea. People have suggested a propulsion method that basically is blowing a nuke and ride on the shockwave (obviously you need a massive shield to protect from the explosion). This has not been tested yet, I think.
It was never tested with any kind of nuclear explosive but it seems they did construct models to test with conventional explosives, but little information of the tests or their results is available. Luckily one of the project managers or something finally decided detonating nukes in the sky repeatedly wasn't very smart. Just kidding, they actually just got banned from doing it. It was called Orion.
"Why don't we use nukes to go to space?" The Orion Nuclear Pulse Drive, AKA Project Orion, was a genuine joint USAF/NASA/DARPA project back in the 50s and 60s to develop a spacecraft engine which literally consisted of throwing nukes out of the back of the spaceship and then riding the shockwave. It was actually really good compared to conventional chemical rockets, with both high thrust and high efficiency. It would also have been relatively cheap. The main problems, naturally, were with a: riding the shockwaves without being destroyed, and b: environmental concerns regarding nuclear fallout (which wouldn't have been a problem in interplanetary travel anyway, though surviving still would).
Lol there was actually a rocket set to launch itself using nukes it dropped behind it but due to some restrictions of course it couldn't be used. Also I watched this while playing Kerbal Space Program ironically.
Not to act like I'm smart or anything, but there are actually concepts out their that- quite literally- used nuclear bombs to propel spacecraft, mainly the Orion Drive. It was looked at back in the 60s during the space race but got ditched because of lack of funding. Seriously cool though, would definitely recommend checking it out.
kAn is actually kinda correct there is a sun powered thruster design called the caplan thruster that uses sun power and another one that i forgot but its just a giant mirror that uses photons as thrust

fun fact, at some point an indapendent space agency attempted to developed a nuclear explosion propelled rocket that detonated nuclear bombs behind it every other second to propel its self upwards, but the idea was scraped for obvious reasons
Now i know you guys were joking about using nuclear power as rocet fuel in the beging, but incase for those who think its a great idea, i want you to know: 1. Th rocket would have radiation 2. the rocket would have less fuel, and there would be tons of radiation 3. the rocket would most likely blow up in atmosphere because the Nuclear fuel would over heat. Also when a rocket comes back from the atmosphere or where ever it was at, the rocket would still have an engine, which in history most engines had a small amount of fuel left. And you only need 1 oz. of Nuclear fuel to start an explosion "IF" it catches on fire or over heats.
you can try Zenith and see if people know it means top (an example is "this is tha absolutely Zenith of your ability?") or if people think it's just a TV
Answer for the intro question: The Orion Program
Nuclear pulse propulsion intensifies
So you just set of a nuke every time you activate it ?
And wouldn’t it just create an emp every time you launch?
