Here are some technical info: Engine overheating does not only depend on the RPM. How hard you press the gas pedal is the main factor in overheating. When you step on the gas pedal more, you send more fuel to the engine. Extra fuel going to the engine results in more power and more thermal energy. When you use a long-ratio transmission, the car's speed potential increases, but torque decreases. Having low torque will cause you to give it more gas, which will cause overheating. When you use a short ratio transmission, you press the gas pedal less because you have enough torque. This allows you to reach longer ranges without overheating. In this type of race, the fastest person will not win, the one who steps on the gas the least will win.
