As to whether or not it’s appropriate to comment on other peoples bodies… I’d like to add something. I am a licensed psychotherapist in Texas who works with eating disorders. As a professional, I stand by my statement that It is not unhealthy to talk about the issue. In fact it is healthier to talk about it then to not talk about it. Young women who are being pressured, either verbally or non-verbally to stay very, very thin, need to hear other perspectives than just the ones they are getting from their peers, their teachers, their profession, and society. It’s healthy to open a dialogue about the idea that - while all bodies are beautiful, bodies that are being physically stressed with enormous amounts of exercise and insufficient food are unhealthy bodies. Furthermore, emotional pressure to maintain an unrealistic weight because of societal ideas about the way that ballerinas should look is even more unhealthy. So while I appreciate that your comment is an attempt to be sensitive to girls who are already sensitive…. be careful. The reason they’re sensitive is that they’re receiving an overwhelmingly massive message from their profession, peers and society to be too thin. Let’s keep this dialogue way, way open for athletes, dancers, models, celebrities… etc.
@Bla Bla they're thin because of all the things you just said AND because you're way way way more likely to be considered for a higher role as a ballerina if you're thin. To say that they just keep the fat off because they exercise so much is being willfully blind: ballerinas WANT to be thin, they have no choice. They restrict calories, if you think they don't you're crazy
@Bla Bla actually dancers come in all shapes and sizes, but many classic ballet companies focus on size to an unhealthy degree. These dancers are likely naturally this size due to genetics more than anything.
