- Orlando Woolridge overcame adversity in a 13 year career which saw him look destined to be the next star of the Chicago Bulls until MIchael Jordan was drafted, then play an important bench role on some great Lakers teams after owning up and beating addiction. Additionally, he was one of the top players on the 1991 Denver Nuggets who are an anomaly of an NBA team. His career lasted 13 seasons and even though he was never even an all star, he averaged 20 or more points 4 times in his career and did so while utilizing his insane athleticism to dazzle fans. So, today Forgotten Player Profiles looks at the late, great Orlando Woolridge.

He was the first I saw so the between the legs dunk with the left hand, Before JR rider, Kobe, Vince etc. Orlando was a good solid scorer

he played on the Bulls with Jordan, the Lakers with Magic, the Pistons with Isaiah, and even the Sixers with Moses Malone but never at the right time to win a title
He is one of my favorite first in game dunkers who would put it on your head; then Dominique came along and took some of his shine, but Woodridge was still getting victims...
He was most def the high flyer before M J came to the bulls. He was one of my Favorite players Growing up very athletic and exciting to watch. Those days with him and MJ high flying will always be special to me being that I'm a life long bulls Fan. great video

I love how the first between the legs dunk was inverted and when J Rich did that everybody was like....damn we have never seen that before
What made it so impressive when J Rich did it imo was because by that time people hardly ever dunked with their off hand, (which is sadly is even more so the case nowadays), which made it so damn impressive to see a dude go between the legs and then throw it down with his left hand. Orlando was the originator of it though, no doubt! It's weird watching guys in the 80's and 90's dunk, youd see off-handed dunks all over the place back then, miss that era man!

I played AAU basketball for the AZ Soul with his son, Royce Woolridge, for 5 years. I actually got to meet Orlando at a tournament before he died.
Based on the fact that Daddy Woolridge never played in AZ & was playing on the East Coast in 1992 when Royce was born...
I came to the conclusion that Royce's mom must have been the 90's version of Brittany Renner; however, she was a really nice lady & Royce was a legit baller that actually signed with Kansas out of highschool. Unfortunately, he didn't get much burn because the Morris twins were also on the Jayhawks at that time.

Nice to see Orlando getting some love , as a kid he was one of my fav players from college to his pro career starting with the Bulls. I recall a scene in the movie "To Live and Die in LA" when Will Peterson mentions Woolridge and Jordan and at the time it blew my mind. nice piece and thanks
How about Allan Houston at some point? He was supposed to be something else and also got a monster contract from the Knicks but somehow injuries just ruined pretty much everything. At his best he was a lethal sniper! His career was an interesting one and spanned Detroit after the Bad Boys and before the success of mid 2000s and he was also a vital part of the contending Knicks which reached even the finals...
Sean Elliott could also be another interesting one. A 'franchise player' for the Spurs who does not get enough credit even though he was a vital small forward and option behind Robinson and later behind Duncan. The 90s Spurs would not have been the same without him.

RIP, Orlando Woolridge. High flyer. Great scorer who didn't need the ball to score, by the way. Shot well from the field most of his career. Had a couple of years where he probably should've been an All-Star, but didn't get voted in.
Either he was a second banana or was on horrible teams when he got snubbed. He wasn't a big ego guy, either. He knew how to adjust from carrying the load, to being a complimentary piece. Most guys can't do that.

Orlando Woolridge was a spectacular dunker and a unique combination of smoothness, explosiveness, and power. Unfortunately he was one of those guys that never seemed to be the sum of his parts. He could put up some big scoring numbers when he was featured offensively, but when he was on an actual great team, the Lakers, he just couldn't become a reliable sixth man for them. Some games he'd look really good, but other times he'd look lost. All the time, he seemed to rest on defense and never rebounded like you'd expect.
I mean, he was 6'9" and could jump out of the gym, but he averaged 4 rebounds a game for his career. Despite being a great athlete and making some spectacular blocks, he got routinely torched by good offensive players and would commit silly fouls.
Woolridge mainly contributed offensively and was by far at his best when slashing to the basket or using his great leaping ability to slam home alley oop passes. He had a passable midrange jumper but never really looked comfortable shooting it, clearly preferring to drive. He could make acrobatic layups but wanted to try to go over guys to ram it in. He probably wouldn't give it back once he got it either, as he was never much of a passer.
Orlando was fun to watch when I was a kid, but now when I watch him play I see all the flaws in his game. He had all the physical tools to be an all star and it's too bad he couldn't find a way to become a more consistent all around player. It's also sad that he only had a couple of years with a really good team. If he'd joined a great team early in his career, he might never have developed all the bad habits that held him back later on.
I know he didn't have a legendary career but he was a true inspiration to Turkish basketball players can you cover Mehmet Okur's career someday

@@baconeggcheesepodcast9390 Scptt Wedman won 2 championship with the Celtics in 1984 and 1986. He was coming off the bench to give Danny Ainge or DJ a break. Same with Henderson. He won 1 championship with the Celtics and was dealt to other team to draft Len Bias. Kevin Gamble was the starting PG during Bird's last years with the Cs. Rick Robey was a Boston Center who won 1 ring in 1981.

I'm 10 years old and the family is naming their favorite Lakers players, I go Orlando Woolridge and my brother kept ribbing me the whole night, basically trying to change my choice to Magic. Not that I want to bring this type of drama in but he never respected anything that came out of my mouth until I basically told him to stay out of my life entirely but because of more than this. When I was 10 and seeing Woolridge alley oop every night they played that to me was cool to see so F U!
