Telling other fans of the show this is my favorite/most heartbreaking Olivia line always makes me feel completely unoriginal. Because who could possibly disagree!
I really liked the way Fringe dealt with this. It's a complicated, messy, painful situation for both of them and both actors do a superb job of conveying that. You can feel Peter's pain and guilt and shame (and how he's holding back because he knows Olivia needs to grieve) and Olivia's utter raw feeling of betrayal in their performances. Peter's belief that Altlivia was his Olivia and Olivia's complete breakdown are both so believable and realistic. What a fantastic (painful!) show.
I think the reason Peter sat there and "took it" without saying anything, was because he knew she deserved to let all her feelings out. Plus, what could Peter possibly say to make Olivia feel better? The only words he knows how to say he does actually say, which is, "I'm sorry." I thought both their reactions were spot on and well done to both Anna and Josh on their acting.
For everyone questioning Peter’s silence, he’s grieving too. He’s watching the relationship he didn’t even get to have with the woman he loves implode and there isn’t anything he can say or do about it. He knows he screwed up. He knows he should’ve seen it. His heart is just as broken as hers, because he has no idea what to do or say to take her pain away. There’s also a part of him that’s grieving the loss of Alt-Liv, he was beginning to build a life with her, but she used him and seemingly took away the future he was trying to build with Olivia.
Peter was equally screwed here. He had thought he had gotten what he wanted, was enjoying it, and had the rug pulled out from under him. All those happy moments, all under false pretenses. He was probably feeling like the worst person in the world.
He sat there and took it for a few episodes, until 6b, where he passionately argued his side, and correctly implied it was only Olivia's hang-ups that were holding them back.

This whole scene is brilliant, but my very favorite thing is when she says "and I don't want to be with you" because the music just cuts out and lets the words hang there and the audience can just kind of absorb them for a second and it's just perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Indeed. The problem with Fringe is that it set the bar too high for me. Most of the other shows seems lacking to me in comparison, specially in the area of engaging with the characters. God such chemistry.

Man....this show!! I will never get over this!! Been more than an year since first watched, still have the entire seasons and still re-watch certain episodes. The GREATEST sci-fi show i've ever witnessed! Thanks for this
This scene kills me every single time I watch it, it's beyond heartbreaking. Anna Torv played this so well and what frustrates me so much now is that this episode was put forward for Emmy consideration. Her portrayal of what she went through having to reintegrate herself back into her life when someone else had been living it, how hard it was realising what happened, and then this powerful scene where everything she'd worked for and wanted wasn't there any more, she played it perfectly, and few other actors could ever come close to this.
I've heard alot of talk on this site and others about how Olivia overreacted about this whole situation and how Fauxlivia was essentially as Olivia but guess what SHE WAS NOT THE SAME PERSON!!! Same genes do not make the same person look at Walter and Walternate. Our Olivia had every right to be mad just as if a clone had been grown from nothing and sent on the same mission
Interestingly, I looked at it from the beginning as a mysterious sci-fi, but the screenwriters managed to put a lot of quality relationship dramas into the story. This scene is really well written and played.
I actually like Peter's reaction to Olivia's unheaval. It's truer to his character. He's always been this stoic, poker-faced, internally emotional man. It's part of what made him a great con-man, he hardly ever gives away what he's truly feeling. Having said that, you can tell he's upset by what Olivia says, that he feels horrible for her about the sitaution. It's just not obvious. You have to look for his "tells". The way he breaths, the way he looks at her, the way he doesn't, etc.
He's a terrible actor. It's no coincidence any scene requiring any emotional depth is scripted to minimize (or remove) his lines. Anna is so talented n carries their scenes together. This one is a perfect example
For me, it's the way he lets her leave. He knows there's nothing he can say or do to change how she feels in that moment, so he just listens. He lets her get it out - uninterrupted - and once she has walked away he just whispers "I'm sorry". Because that's the truth. He is *truly* sorry. And the best apology is changed behavior. Later, he refuses to allow himself even the possibility of being fooled ever again. He turns down *his* Olivia because he *needs* to be sure. Peter changed his behavior because*that's* how much he loves Olivia. He wants to be the best possible version of himself because that's what he believes his Olivia deserves.
He is completely destroyed here. It is absolutely obvious to me. Only a very attentive and diligent actor can keep silence like that. Joshua Jackson is absolutely beautiful and precise here in his silence.
I like how Anna/Olivia can be acusatory without purposely hurting Peter. She's stating her deep feelings and still trying to be fair to him. I love how she still has every right to walk off. Sje says whqt needs to be said and ends it. Brilliantly executed.
This clip is one that made me want to start watching Fringe just about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Anna did an amazing job with this scene and for me to never have even seen an episode to tear up is saying something. I just finished this episode (I bought every season and am doing it right, from the beginning) and it is SO much better when you have the back story. So moving! This just keeps getting better and better!
This show is a masterclass in psychology, more specifically grief and bereavement. Olivia goes through the 5 stages of grief throughout these 3 episodes until she forgives Peter. She works through the issues just like a therapist would recommend (I should know, I am one). When she reads the notes Altlivia wrote on Peter she came to a realization that Peter fell for it because Altlivia actually cared for Peter, it became more than a mission. She also started to see that Peter was just as embarrassed and violated as she was. I think that helped her cope, knowing that he felt the same way.
@user-ky5kl9eb4f Thank you, this show used common sense in its romance a lot more than other shows. It used angst, but in a smart way. I enjoyed being able to dissect the thinning of the characters because it felt more along the lines of how actual people would approach these situations

I plan to do this as a monologue. This was beautiful use of sci-fi drama, factoring in how being replaced by a fake version of you would realistically result in the most heart-breaking identity crisis ever.
Anna Torv did a GREAT job here.So did the writers. They showed us that, despite everything,Olivia is a human being. And even though she understands why Peter didn't notice it was Alt!Livia, she still wanted him to.Selfish?Maybe, but everyone is a bit selfish, and Olivia is no exception. She was replaced by a girl who was nothing like her,and nobody, not even Peter, could tell the difference.Like nobody knew or loved her enough to realize she wasn't there. That's gotta be frustrating,at least.
watch this vid then immediately watch their last scene from 3x21 it's amazing to see how they endured and came back stronger than ever!! Olivia x Peter always!!
the most heartbreaking thing that has ever happened on Fringe is when Peter says "I'm sorry" after she has already gone, like he knows nothing he can say will ever make a difference :( :( :( :(
Until Fringe, I never exactly got my emotions evoked by a television show and for years I've been watching it with a passion...but this scene was so sad a heart-wrenching, and it honestly almost brought a tear to my eye. I really, really hope that Olivia forgives Peter someday.
I was waiting for that reaction..I mean...how could he NOT see that??? I'm a fringe "newie"..just started with season 1 a few weeks ago and I gotta say, with every episode I saw, I dug it more..and THIS is the best scene so far. Exited for what's to come next..
Always felt absolutely terrible for what Olivia went through. I didn't feel it was dealt with in anywhere near enough depth. She was going to be murdered in the most horrible way, she was a prisoner in an entire world with no escape, she went through extreme brainwashing, and she comes back to find the situation as it was with the alternate Olivia. I was never able to forgive what the alternate Olivia, or Walter, or the others from that world did to her.
I think they did handle it well. Olivia came back to work far too soon, which is totally something she would try to do, she hadn't allowed herself to deal with everything that happened in any way. It doesn't take long at all for her to start falling to pieces. All Peter could really was sit there and take it.
In this scene, I think Peter finally understands why Walter stole him, and why it drove him insane. From this episode on, Peter does more and more with Walter, slowly rebuilding their relationship back up. It was an incredible episode, one of Fringe's best. One of Anna Torv's greatest performances. Emmy worthy!
" She wasn't me. How could you not see that? Now, she's everywhere; she's in my house, my job, my bed, and I don't wanna wear my clothes anymore and I don't wanna live in my apartment, and I don't wanna be with you". JUST... HEARTBREAKING, it's not fair that she has to suffer this much, her entire life is falling apart and she fells so alone, i hope they can work this out, Olivia deserves to be happy, it's been a while...
Olivia Dunham is my favorite fictional character and, in my opinion, one of the best examples of a " strong character", male or female. Hollywood seems to think a "strong female character" is a woman who has total confidence and/or unmatched natural abilities, but I couldn't disagree more. Olivia is strong because of her self-doubt and moments of vulnerability. She has the courage and the will to do what she needs to do, even when she is emotionally falling apart on the inside. Season 3 episode 1 is a great example. She is on the run and trying to get back to her universe, stops at a gas station to cry in the bathroom, then comes out and keeps going. It's admirable.
The only emotional scene between Olivia and Peter in Fringe where I find Peter displaying emotions like a normal human being. I really wanted to see Peter emote more in such scenes. Besides I hate the fact that it was always Olivia who brought out this topic and tried to talk while Peter being the guilty one never tried to talk it out except for the one scene where Walter tried for them to patch up.
Peter was upfront about things earlier in the episode. He told her the truth, in that he was fooled because Olivia seemed happier and different, and it was because she was with him. He had no reason to question it. So he's silent because he knows sooner or later she's going to vent at him for it....and, well, what else can he really say in his defense?
@MrSmackism Noooo, no way. He had feelings for Olivia BEFORE Altlivia even came into the picture. Like he explains to Olivia, he saw the changes and accepted them because he thought it was normal since their relationship WAS different. PLUS, I'm sure he felt quite proud to make Olivia happier. Poor Peter.
One of the most hearbreaking scene in all seasons 😢😢 Anna is such a great actress. Her ability to convey sensations and emotions through her eyes and voice is exceptional
this scene makes me so sad, but i think it was so well done because it was real-other shows might have put them right back together, but realistically this would be a painfully process for any couple. anna torv is also a rockstar in this scene (and i dont mean to incite the josh jackson fight going on, this just wasn't peter's moment to have a big speech)
@FawnCC Beautiful answer :)) That last scene is simply fantastic. The more I watch it, the more I'm in awe of all the little details in their faces and hand gestures. SIMPLY AWESOME.
Awwwww! What a bad break! I am not sure either if I could forgive and forget or not. You would think there would be something different that Peter could've seen or felt. But, on the other hand, he has been in love with her for some time without the feelings really being returned. So then when he got his break he grabbed it. But do you think he would've wondered why the quick change of heart? Who knows!
I'm on the 14th episode of season 3 and I cry whenever I see them together. It looks like there's no hope but I'm sure they'll manage that or at least I hope they will. Fauxlivia ruined everything... If she wasn't pregnant there would be a chance for them. I don't know what happens next but I'll keep looking for a chance for them.
After watching the full series, this part truly got me in the heart. I knew those two were eventually going to fall in love and there were going to be obstacles ahead. But, when Peter was tricked by the Alt. Olivia and the real Olivia faced the cold reality of what happened during her absence, I felt her pain and wished things could have happened differently. True love falling apart to near impossible really gets me, you know?
I think they both get plenty of opportunities. There are some scenes where I love Olivia - Anna and there are some scenes where I love Peter- Josh and even more where I can't decide who was the best. This scene falls into the last category because while this scene was about Olivia and she did an awesome job, Peter just sits there and takes it and I just have to wonder what is going through his head; does he finally understand what Walter did or is he just crushed by what he did?
Anna Torv is an amazing actor. I hope when this ends (and ends well, please god, not with a whimper but a bang) she has plenty of opportunities lined up - cool movies, cool shows, lots of money. I think it's an interesting perspective that maybe Peter liked the other Olivia better. I don't think it's true, but I think it makes sense that he might have liked her as that character too - she's more of an asshole, living more in the moment, more self-promoting, really more like Peter himself.
Thank god she never knew the fact that a child was born between those short time. Peter is really horrible here. Then, in S4 when he trying really hard to deny that Olivia really "his" Olivia. He knew.
This is yet another reason why season 4 is bugging me. We went through all of this with Olivia, her suffering, and then went through everything in the second half of season 3 involving them coming back together...ONLY to now be watching Peter unable to get to her. We've already been through this before...
This is just my opinion but I honestly think it wasn't AltLivia he preferred, but more what he thought was this new side to his/our Olivia. If I were him I would see these changes as Olivia opening up to me, letting me in. I really don't think he preferres the other Olivia, what he said in season two, in my opinion, was his way of distancing himself from the everything and everyone from the other side. The brunette hair meant change, a difference. So at the time he liked it.
I'm struggling whether I should "like" it or not! On one hand this scene is brilliantly done by Anna Torv. On the other hand, this is just tragic! To an extent I hate it so much that I'll have to dislike it!
I love this scene. I was totally mesmerized by Olivia's heart-wrenching speech. You could really feel how much pain she was in and how disappointed Peter made her feel. The one thing I've got to say about this scene is that I was let down by Peter's whole demeanor while listening to her. Where was the pain in the eyes? the shame for what he did? He may have said 'sorry' at the end (AFTER she had left) but I didn't really get that he wholeheartedly meant it. Just MY opinion.
@AwesomeAuror I agree. I don't think for the character, and for the audience, that the relationship could be continued in that way without it being extremely awkward. Hopefully, however, the 'family unit' that it was referred to in season 2 can be restored.
Peter did see differences, like how she was faster to smile, but maybe he thought he was doing those things, making her happier. He thought she had changed. And Olivia tried to forgive Peter, tried to suppress the fact that she was just not ok with it, but she just isn't ok with it. It's not rational, it doesn't make sense, but she loved him when he shouldn't be real, and she can't forget that he didn't realize that the person he was sleeping with, having a relationship with, wasn't even her.
I agree with u 100% because he believe that his love for her was bring out the new side of Olivia, also the love that he was getting from AltLivia who he believe was Olivia was changing him also.
Noooooooooooo i cant believed it!!! Olivia is right, i mean how could Peter not see that she wasnt olivia???? if he loved her, he must to know that, just looking her eyes...the pain of Olivia is so deep...:(
POOR BABY ! SHE DOESN'T EVEN WANT HIM TO TOUCH HER ! HE'S FEELING GUILTY, BUT I GUESS ONLY TIME CAN SOLVE THIS PROBLEM ! HE MADE A MISTAKE HE SHOULDN'T TELL HER THAT BOLIVIA SMILES MORE AND SHE'S LESS INTENSE, THAT MADE HER FEEL BAD ABOUT HERSELF! SHE'S A MESS NOW ! AND NOBODY IS THERE BY HER SIDE TO COMFORT HER! I WISH RACHEL AND ELLA ARE BACK SO SHE CAN BE WITH THEM INSTEAD OF CRYING ALONE IN THE DARK EVERYNIGHT ! PETER'S EYES OMG! HE'S CRYING INSIDE I REALLY DON'T BLAME HIM!HE WAS IN LOVE!
I was a hardcore Polivia shipper. I loved them together. I was so excited every time they made progress in their relationship. But after this episode, all of those feelings were gone. Now they're back in the same universe and I no longer see them as a good couple. I can't see it ever working out because of what they both did and are doing, and I honestly don't want it to. Not now anyway. I think I've always known Peter and Olivia would never really be together and now I can finally accept it.
@Damon242 That would be nice. Going back to the family is probably the best path this show can take, and I really hope they don't force Peter and Olivia back together. It would look unnatural and contrived at this stage. And "Fringe Friday Family" just sounds really funny.
@MrSmackism Well, I certainly hope that Peter doesnt prefer Alt-livia, although someone like Astrid might say that Peter did seem pretty happy when he was seein' Alt-livia. If the writers somehow bring back Agent Scott from the first season through the same reanimation techniques done on the ballerina and have Scott and Liv reunite, that would upset a lot of viewers and me also.
yes i believe that they r both victims, even though peter had it easier, but she shouldnt blame him., and he shouldnt blame altivia. walternate was behind the switching order between altivia and olivia..and altivia was just following orders, she believes that there really is a war between the two universes, and developed real feeling for peter during the assignment. but still im glad peter is letting her take it out on him, he wants her to feel better,
@sophie22delco YES, Olivia is definitely the victime here, since Altlivia stole her life and 'lover' along with everything else. But I think Peter is a victime too. He was used and manipulated by Altlivia, she used his love for Olivia, and he thought she was her, and now he's going to have to deal with the pain he's inflicting her and the guilt. It's just...I wouldn't want to be any of them right now.
I used to hate Peter because of this. He didn't see through that AltLivia. And now ss 4 frustrates me that the producers are breaking them up again after Olivia forgave Peter and they got together. Come on!!!!!!!
ohhhhh shit!!!... spoiler alert? XD.. i just wanted to know if i watched this episode!.. now i know 2 things.. i didn't watch it... and i know how it ends! XD.. great scene BTW!:.. :P and yeaaah... i read it said end scene! u.u.. little too late!.. damm you fast 6mb connection!!..
Yeah maybe he should've notice it wasn't her, but she isn't the most talkative person out there and neither is he, and if they weren't so closed with each other he could have notice it wasn't her. They just don't know each other completely. /end meaningless rant.
@MayBrainLee1 You're done with this show because I said "You're not bad yourself"? O_o Okay. You know, when I say that, I mean that he was great too, right (there's a hint of humour here but I guess you missed it). If I didn't like his acting I would have said "Josh, you sucked dude, sorry." I thought he was great, but Anna Torv just had more opportunities to show it in this episode. Chill out.

Pretty much.
Anna Torv definitely needs Emmy for this.
Heartbreaking scene :'(
I'd love to know what that instrumental piece of music is. It also played during their kiss in the finale and it's beautiful.
God I love this scene!
So he's silent because he knows sooner or later she's going to vent at him for it....and, well, what else can he really say in his defense?
this was such a sad scene :( i think one of the most heartbreaking i have ever seen on fringe :(
still heartbreaking 02.02. 2021
This scene is heart breaking, specially when he whispers "I'm sorry" after she left
I die every time I watch this scene!
this scene makes me so sad, but i think it was so well done because it was real-other shows might have put them right back together, but realistically this would be a painfully process for any couple. anna torv is also a rockstar in this scene (and i dont mean to incite the josh jackson fight going on, this just wasn't peter's moment to have a big speech)
Who knows!
One of the most powerful scenes in the history of Fringe.
Don't worry Olivia you're not the only one thinking about why Peter didn't notice it wasn't you :P
"I'm sorry..."
Snot flies out of my nose.
I hope Anna Torv gets at least an Emmy nomination for this!
What a scene. I thought season 3 was going to be a bore, but this is beyond any expectations anyone seems to have had.
Thank god she never knew the fact that a child was born between those short time. Peter is really horrible here. Then, in S4 when he trying really hard to deny that Olivia really "his" Olivia. He knew.
It's 2024 and I need to re-watch this show
I've rewatched it and it was awesome
This is yet another reason why season 4 is bugging me. We went through all of this with Olivia, her suffering, and then went through everything in the second half of season 3 involving them coming back together...ONLY to now be watching Peter unable to get to her.
We've already been through this before...
I couldn't agree more with you. I've memorized it and sometimes i say the same things. hahaha But it was powerful!
Oh gawd... this scene BREAKS MY HEART. I can't stop crying... I don't ever get so emotional, but this.... this KILLS ME. ;_;
OMG ! HEARTBROKEN :'( POOR OLIVIA !
To an extent I hate it so much that I'll have to dislike it!
u kno that was like the most realistic reaction of someone who had been replaced. awesome
Just MY opinion.
yeah, I think so too. For some reason it seems to me that he even has more chemistry with her (even though I know the actor is the same)
This scene was 😭😭
Watching, 2024.
Anyone know this song's name please?
i'm just going to go sit in a corner and...cry a little
@AwesomeAuror I agree. I don't think for the character, and for the audience, that the relationship could be continued in that way without it being extremely awkward.
Hopefully, however, the 'family unit' that it was referred to in season 2 can be restored.
Why is this scene so painful?😢😢😢😢
Olivia is right, i mean how could Peter not see that she wasnt olivia???? if he loved her, he must to know that, just looking her eyes...the pain of Olivia is so deep...:(
She's like "Don't touch me" It's just so sad. And we need to wait until Firefly in January 21. AEDFGHJK.-
@MrSmackism I think he preferred Altivia, I mean when he was on the other side he even said he preferred the way she looked
@FawnCC I too am hoping that this experience will lead to him finally forgive Walter.
12 year later your opinion still stand?
@Damon242
That would be nice. Going back to the family is probably the best path this show can take, and I really hope they don't force Peter and Olivia back together. It would look unnatural and contrived at this stage. And "Fringe Friday Family" just sounds really funny.
Can someone tell me what this show is and what's going on
No, because you should probably just, you know, watch it...
@@scotty6858 I don't know the name genius
@@user-oo1fk3nv8z It's Fringe. Now you know. Go watch it.
@@scotty6858 ya thanks.
@MrSmackism Well, I certainly hope that Peter doesnt prefer Alt-livia, although someone like Astrid might say that Peter did seem pretty happy when he was seein' Alt-livia. If the writers somehow bring back Agent Scott from the first season through the same reanimation techniques done on the ballerina and have Scott and Liv reunite, that would upset a lot of viewers and me also.
yes i believe that they r both victims, even though peter had it easier, but she shouldnt blame him., and he shouldnt blame altivia. walternate was behind the switching order between altivia and olivia..and altivia was just following orders, she believes that there really is a war between the two universes, and developed real feeling for peter during the assignment. but still im glad peter is letting her take it out on him, he wants her to feel better,
thumbs up if tv.com review, brought you here
@sophie22delco YES, Olivia is definitely the victime here, since Altlivia stole her life and 'lover' along with everything else.
Because she understood Peter altlivia was easily to play a fool him
thing is peter was catching on but afteraltlivia slept with him she distracted him from looking anymore
@MayBrainLee1 You won't be done with anything that has Joshua Jackson in it. Admit it.
ohhhhh shit!!!... spoiler alert? XD.. i just wanted to know if i watched this episode!.. now i know 2 things.. i didn't watch it... and i know how it ends! XD.. great scene BTW!:.. :P
and yeaaah... i read it said end scene! u.u.. little too late!.. damm you fast 6mb connection!!..
Chill out.
Yape 1, everyone,
Roboc whick
@Suliet005 that will do it alright
