The great stupa of Boudhanath in Kathmandu is one of the largest in Nepal and a major pilgrimage site as well as tourist attraction. It is thought to have been built in the late 6th century CE by a king of the Nepalese Licchavi Kingdom and was enlarged and expanded upon later, most likely in the 14th century CE.
For hundreds of years, the Boudhanath Stupa has stood as a beacon of Buddhist belief, towering over the surrounding town as a giant mandala of peace and beauty and also giant eyes. Built some time around the 14th century, the huge meditative monument is said to have been created just after the passing of the Buddha.
UNESCO world heritage sites recognized in 1979 AD. Boudhanath is the largest stupa in Nepal and holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet.
