    I remember seeing a documentary on a trans woman as a kid in the 80’s or 90’s and it was really moving to me at the time. I remember seeing her struggles like telling her family and recovering from medical stuff. It was so much work and so important to her, I thought no one would choose to go through this unless they absolutely had to. I think a lot of kids are naturally empathetic and can choose that path regardless of their parents’ views. With more awareness around it, that is happening now more and more. We just have to remember that there will always be the opposite extreme pushing fear, ignorance, and hatred.

    1:41 I desperately needed to hear this. I'm afab and identify as a transmasc person, but I don't take hormones, I don't bind, and I'm still on the fence about top surgery. I sometimes feel alienated in my own (trans) community. To hear this from a trans icon I look up to is so validating

    I think parents also worry about the physical well-being of their children regarding surgery, hormones effects and society as it pertains to safety. They also have to emotionally come to grips with the child
    they nurtured and had dreams for, which is natural, choosing such a different path. I think parents just need time, acceptance, education and love too to wrap their heads around such a drastic change with their babies. Before anyone is an adult, they were somebody's baby and child. We are all only human so Gottmik is right, it is better to come from a place of love. Patience and kindness is important with love.

    I think using the term ignorant is legit for people who misuse terms or say things without intentional malice. But to call them, or anyone unschooled, inherently transphobic doesn't ring true. Unless there's intentional malice or bullying, it's just ignorance. I understand that it's not anyone's job to educate the masses, but all this is still relatively new, so patience and a quick comment like "that's offensive" can go a long way to some people learn.

    • @greenbeantm1096
      @greenbeantm1096 6 месяцев назад +2

      Being trans is not new in anyway and there is MORE than enough info out there on how it works, what’s offensive, etc. if you genuinely don’t know about it then you’re just willfully ignorant

      @@greenbeantm1096 There is NOT. You hear people talk about it all the time, that there wasn't a word for it when they grew up, then they moved to the city and their eyes were opened. We unfortunately haven't come as far as we like to think we have sometimes. You may have been blessed to grow up in a space where this was accessible information, but not everyone has that fortune. To grow up in a town of 4000 people where you never had the opportunity to interact with this community puts some people at a serious disadvantage, or a country where it would have been criminal to try and access this information... The initial comment wasn't saying they were CORRECT in their ignorance, they were just differentiating between inexposure/ignorance and transphobia. Now, if you have been introduced to the opportunity of learning about and embracing the trans community and don't listen ... Then you are WILLFULLY ignorant, and in my opinion that means you are transphobic. I respect your opinion, but I think you are mistaken.

    I think we do have to reflect a little bit more on how liberally we use the word transphobic. I understand that these two beautiful people are both probably more generous than they need to be when other people don't understand their journeys. I'm not a medical expert, nor am I an expert on the English language but I do think there is a significant difference between not understanding and being transphobic at least in the context that transphobia is publicly understood. Just as an example, someone who doesn't understand, might come across as their definition of inherently transphobic, but maybe they are just incredibly intimidated by someone who is able to stand so tall in their truth and be unapologetically themselves. Or someone may be unsure how to address someone, whether or not to pull out a chair for them... etc... I feel, that is more of a reflection on that person than how they feel about others. I agree that some comments can kind of come across as backhanded, particularly those like "but you're so fun". I'm not trying to invalidate any trans perspective, but I do think a lot of these topics are subjective and so a lot of different opinions can be valid. I (personally) feel when someone says something like that, it tells me they are aware of transgender presence and the issues that surround it but haven't really committed to learning about how to celebrate this instead of being fearful of it, and so in that light they are maybe trans-exclusionary but not necessarily transPHOBIC. I guess I think of transphobic as having more of a "get away" kind of attitude and I don't think it's fair to pair people who just don't understand with those people. I certainly am not meaning to be argumentative with any of this video, I always enjoy Gigi's openness on this topic and am so impressed with her ability to live so unapologetically herself, I know less about Gottmik but enjoy her perspective in this discussion, it just made me think and I felt like sharing my thoughts.

    If sex dysphoria doesn't make you trans, then being trans is only about gender roles and stereotypes, which means Gottmik is a woman for doing drag. It's one or the other.

      Sex dysphoria makes you transsex, gender dysphoria makes you transgender. Most trans people are both. And gender expression is different than gender identity. Gender expression is gender stereotypes and roles, Gender identity is about language. Also his drag queen persona is just a character he plays. Pretty much all drag queens are characters that actors are playing, thats why you use she/her pronouns for them in drag, but he/him (or whatever pronouns they use) outside of drag
